Bruyn . . . because as Director of the Development Pro- gram (and as advisor to Llamarada) she has taken care of some of Mount Holyoke's more tangible and practical problems, and perhaps this tangible and practical record of our years at college is the best way we can show our appreciation. And too, because someday as alumnae we will be welcomed back by her broad warm smile, maybe her long black cigarette holder, and certainly by her hearty handshake, this is our thank you, in advance, for extending them so graciously. .. As you begin, we began, with a theme for our Llatnarada. A theme for you to read, and for us to write, a theme that you would understand, and that we would be able to follow. We have chosen the Tartan ... the Scotch Plaid . . . Scotland ... the Heather and the Hill . . . Aggie. Our tartan is made of colors, colors blended together to make the whole. No color is complete without the other, and the pattern is not complete without them all. We have woven a lot of different colors into our plaid. We have put a lot of different things into our book. We hope that the book we have created will not jar the poetic or aesthetic sense that anyone might possess. We hope that the colors we have chosen will not clash. Not being experts at either compiling a book or weaving a tartan, we cannot hope that we have achieved perfect re- sults. We do hope that you will like what we have done. Having mixed quite a bit together in both our ventures, perhaps it might be wise to explain some of it. Because the tartan is gay, with bright colors and vivid tones, we have tried to put a litlle of that into our Llamarada, and be- cause it is deeply traditional and filled with meaning, we have tried to keep traditions in our book, and of course, we have tried not to make it mean- ingless. And so, we give you the 1953 IJamarada, all that it is, and all that it isn't. We apologize for its inadequacies, and we take pride in its merits. If our pic- tures are ever too candid, or our copy too casual, it is only because, in true Scotch spirit, we have attempted “to see oursels as ithers see us”, and if in doing so we have managed to put a little “glee in your eye”, well, we kinna say that we’re sorry for it. ::jVrVtV:; ' :•-: ;vA:-:: --i - ; -:?« NVW k ,:;v.v.v V-:v:; : s-r«: 5:«;-: s-m« t :: j £; I I • ( i ‘fXty v ju • v ’; :V . • 'L v:v v W « ft ? w ii : V V e st 2 i . We all belong to the Student Government Asso- ciation, and it belongs to all of us. It is the whole, and we are the parts it is the sum of. We of S.G.A. make its rules and follow them. Forming this large and cosmopolitan Student Government Associa- tion there are several committees, and actually, every organization on campus is in some way under S.G.A. s jurisdiction. It is quite a government that we have set up for ourselves, and it is fortunate that it is able to run so smoothly, considering the difficulties in which so many other governments seem to find themselves these days. The backbone of our life at college, both aca- demically and socially is the honor system, and it is this that is dependent upon the effective and meaningful work of our J.B. By careful and sen- sible handling of the problems that come before it, the Judicial Hoard has kept our honor system an alive and vital influencing force among us all. Judicial Board: I). A Breather on Mountain Day 20 Headin' for the Hills CLASS OF '56 Those first weeks were hard, trying to remember so many names, analyzing that roommate, going to thousands of meetings, taking tests, and run- ning up bills at the Bookstore. Then came the still aching muscles of Mountain Day, meals inter- rupted by “Ach lieber, liebers”, the drudgeries of i ’ scrub’1 on Hazing Day, and the strong support of Big Sisters. Soon there was a formal introduc- tion to Bluebooks, daily coffee at the C.I., the frustrations of source themes, box lunches for Junior Show. These were followed by Holly Hop and its tinseled tree, a longed for vacation, the agonies of mid-years, spring fever and our Ring Presentation skit. These and many more have made Freshman year memorable to the Class of ’56. I Class officers: McGregor, Judd, Winkle, Jacobs, Graham (president), Andrews. CLASS OF '55 22 1955 filled the year with so many activities that there wasn’t time for the perennial ‘slump”. First there was Soph Reception, an “out of this world” affair that would have made Buck Rogers turn green with envy. Xot ready to rest on our laurels at such an early date, at Christmas we decorated the chapel, serenaded the campus with carols, and had a class breakfast. Having safely survived exams, we turned our talents to the two star attractions of the year, Soph Skit and Soph Hop. In Skit we visited ‘ Pooh Land”, and saw our classmates transformed into such characters as Eyor, Piglet and Rabbit. Soph Hop rang down the curtain on a wonderful year of learning and good times for the yellow Sphinx. 23 CLASS OF '54 Junior Year . . . the last chance to do tilings without a constant nostalgia. Those first days were the ones when we proudly showed the college to our newly acquired Little Sisters. Then right away we plunged info a unique interpretation of Wagner’s “Das Rheingold”. With the dragon suc- cessfully destroyed by November First, we were able to return to studying our advanced courses, we thought. However, it seemed that we found ourselves singing in the choir and Glee Club and selling Junior Lunch and making plans for Junior Prom instead. We got some work done though, and the close warm friendships fostered by sharing studies, moods and problems, have created the unity that shall make us forever ’o4. “We are A breathing puff atop a Swiss bluff es it again “Into the woods’’ Weavers of dreams 25 M. I Somehow, IRC has had the knack of inducing some of the most interesting speakers to come to Mount Holyoke. It is through a program of lec- tures and group discussion that IRC tries to ac- quaint the campus with the world of foreign affairs. By its participation in several all-college meetings, it has the opportunity to hear others and express its own views. The foreign students play a large part in the IRC program, and it is to promote international relations that the IRC awards its scholarship to study in a foreign coun- try, to a deserving student each summer. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB « r—see! ss I I Gale Long (prendent) UNITED WORLD FEDERALISTS In these times of dissension and disagreement, a group with an optimistic outlook and a plan for successful world government is refreshing. The United World Federalists bring their point of view, and others, into light, through meetings and discussions. They are an active group on campus, and its members are truly interested in presenting its ideas to everyone. NS A is an association of the student govern- ments of many colleges. It might well be called the “voice of the students of America. Its concerns are the exchange of ideas and information, im- provement of student welfare, and stimulation of democratic and effective student government. This year NSA worked on establishing a travel bureau on campus, and in the fall, again sponsored Inter- national Students' Day. N.S. A. S4 Joyce Bra vender (chairman) I ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION A.A., by keeping up the athletic spirit on cam- pus, has proved that Kendall Hall is more than just an added attraction. However, outdoor sports are still popular and are furthered by tournaments and shows. This year A.A. played host to the Northeast Hockey Tournament. The Athletic Association sponsors Dance Club, Water Ballet and Sailing Club, as well as dorm and class activities. Intramural games are always in progress, and there is keen, if not rugged, competi- tion in all of them. Honors and awards are given to both individuals and classes in the Fall at A.A.'s “Just Desserts ’ Open to everyone, A.A. is an organization for instructive sport as well as fun. «w Citation A. Tomlinson, B. Vaughan (president), S. Longsworth, J. Woodruff Les Danseuses I OUTING CLUB ) For those who like to forget their books, for those who like to be out and around, Outing Club is the best solution Mount Holyoke can offer. There is the fireplace near Lower Lake, the cabin on Mount Holyoke, and many trips farther afield. For company on these excursions and at the square dances, there are the out-of-doors men of several nearby colleges. On Mountain Day, the club sees to it that bi- cycle trips are planned, and that buses are on hand for those who want to climb the Range or Grey- lock, but haven’t the energy to get there. As far as outdoor eating and cooking is con- cerned, both the fireplace and cabin are wonderful places, although the cabin provides a spot for all night singing and sleeping in rustic surroundings. Less natural, perhaps, than the mountains, trees “I dreamt I went climbing . . .” and sky, is the very necessary station wagon, which transports supplies, sleeping bags, and lazy O.C.ers to their respective destinations. All these go to make the (Wing Club the fun it is for those free hours. And who knows? Here you too may find your handsome logger who stirs his coffee with his thumb. “Burning leaves in crisp October” I THE FELLOWSHIP OF FAITHS The Fellowship of Faiths is an extremely unique organization. More people on campus think that they are members of it than Fellowship has ever heard of, or received dues from. Whether it is popularity or publicity is unknown, but the result is that most people have heard a lot about it, most people know what it does and is doing, and most people are interested in both the group and its activities. According to its constitution, the four purposes 40 of the organization are Faith Education, Inter- faith Education, Social Service and Worship. Faith Education is done through the three faith groups, Protestant, Catholic and Jewish, which are available for members to join, but are not re- quired. Interfaith Education includes all campus conferences, lectures and discussions. Rabbit Hol- low, a camp for underprivileged children, the girl scouts, and the Y.W.C.A. are a few of the things that make up the Social Service program. The Worship function of the Fellowship is performed through Thursday morning chapels, and the ves- per, candlelight and communion services that are held. It is perhaps because of the many and varied activities of the Fellowship of Faiths, and because these many different groups and services have been placed under one whole, that the organiza- tion was given its very appropriate name, which Webster defines as ‘%a community of interest, activity, feeling ’ E. W.M.H.C “Can a girl from a little mining town . . .? The additions included its newscasts from the ticker-tape, its original dramatic series, and its literary and variety programs. MUSIC Angels in the Outfield Allon Gay Gay Music, maestro From Pratt to Abbey Chapel, from Chapin to New York’s Town Hall, there's Holyoke “Music In the Air.” Even the C.I. gets its share of sharps and flats in the twice weekly rehearsals of the V-8’s, Holyoke’s tuneful answer to the DQ. On Tuesday evenings, Pratt's walls ring with the toots and vibrato of the orchestra, practicing for a vesper service or joint concert with M.I.T. Sponsored by the college, and the Holyoke Junior League, visiting artists turn Chapin into a con- cert hall four times a year. Throughout the year, each class choir raises its voice in the Chapel, with the Junior Choir aug- menting the Sunday morning services. Then, at Christmastime, Glee Club harmonies beat a rhythmic greeting to cosmopolitan New York, and later in the year scale the melodic heights of Haverford College. Then, as the Seniors graduate, this same group swells a chord of good wishes from the musical heart of Mount Holyoke. Xordquist t- - FRIENDS OF ART THE NEWS One of the oldest institutions on campus, the News has appeared every week for the past thirty- five years. It keeps the college posted on past and future events, to say nothing of the present. It prints radio, class, and exam schedules, all and everything that concerns the Holyoke student. The production starts at lunch on Thursday, with a meeting of the editors who plan the articles. The assignments, posted on Friday, are completed by the reporters by Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday night, the assembling of the issue; Thursday, the proofreading: and Friday, 5:00 F.M., the News is out. B. M. O. C. 47 Foreign Correspondent R ut ha n ne Chadwick (edilor-in-ckief) LLAMARADA Llamarada is perhaps the best kept secret on campus. Not even those who work on the staff know all about it. Only seven seniors, the editors, have any idea of what the theme or pagination or dedicatee of the yearbook will be. It is not until late in spring, when the books arrive on campus, that Mount Holyoke gets a glimpse of itself, and up to that point many had no idea that they were to play such an important part in the record of the past year at college. Then, while the rest of the campus sits back and reads about themselves, the Llamarada board crosses their fingers, and hopes that the secret has been worth keeping. 48 “Cornin' thru the Rye” If V’. -UVr’ ff . The week-end is over before it begins, and it s usually such a busy one that you’re lucky if you get a chance to talk to vour date. Dragnet 58 This was election year, and although most of us weren’t able to vote, we did our best to make some kind of an impression upon the electorate. We organized clubs, one for Eisenhower and one for Stevenson. When the candidates came to Spring- field, we went there to meet them. We had a Democratic congressman and a Republican gover- nor come to speak to us. Republican party Waiting for the train to come in SELECTION It was an exciting few weeks for us all. Every- one wore campaign buttons, and there were poli- tical posters in Skinner, P.0, and throughout the dorms. We did a lot of cheering and a lot of sing- ing. We even had a straw ballot taken on campus, and though the ratio wasn’t the same, we were certainly on the right track, for in 1952, as Mount Holyoke went, so went the nation. WEEK-END 59 I I A Couple of Swells Assembly Line Perhaps the most glamorous event of our college career, it is the one dance that people worry about having dates for three years in advance. It is the social function that is familiar to almost every college, and at Mount Holyoke, it is even worth a formal, engraved invitation. Ours was set in a Chinese Garden, and was truly quite a lovely sight. The Promenade around Chapin, although it was not executed with the greatest of precision, did add dignity to a very wonderful evening. The West Point Story Fanfare PARENTS’ WEEKEND It is the first weekend in May, and Mount Holyoke invites everyone for a gala open-house. The spring cleaning has been done, and the grass has been cut. The college is in excellent condition and we are proud of it. Therefore, why not show it off? Our parents are our honored guests, and we show them whatever they want to see. In the morning the Faculty-Student softball game at- tracts a large crowd as students and faculty dem- onstrate their ability and agility respectively. Strike three! You’re out!... sir. Our mothers are usually anxious to see the pres- entation of the May Queen and her Court. Our fathers can never understand why their daughters aren’t in it, and seem more eager to meet the faculty to find out whether these daughters are at least intelligent. 63 1 Out of it No love, no nothing “By yon bonnic banks Holyoke becomes a reality and not just a con- fused-but-enthusiastic letter on this lovely May weekend. The family camera is never still and neither are the subjects, as helpful daughters insist that harassed fathers take pictures of every friend, building or event that happens. The whole family dashes madly from place to place, but even though it is very warm, for some reason every father is afraid to take off his jacket. There are many weak parents at the end of Parents’ Weekend, but at last Mom, Dad and Holyoke have met. Ship V Shore if; |Z. u-. J « CHAPELS AND CHURCHES Abbey ( Impel sees us in the most varied states of attire, from the oldest weekday • clothes on Tuesday and Thursday morn- ings, to the highest of fashions on Sunday. The spirit on these occasions, however, is uniform, and one which is a vital part of Mount Holyoke. Churches find us assem- bled to listen to the stirring music of a class choir, and the stimulating sermon by a visiting minister. The chapel is filled with alumnae, parents or dates on larger week-ends, such as Founder's Day, the Christinas week-end. Parents' Dav and dance week-ends. Bi-weekly chapel ser- vices feature favorite hymns, scripture readings, and talks on both religious and secular topics. The announcements made on Tuesday mornings may vary from the new members of Phi Beta Kappa, or the list of Sarah WiHiston scholars, to a plea to look our best for the coming alumnae week-end. Mr. Ham's talks are the best remembered of the morning chapel ser- vices, although the Thursday morning Fellowship of Faiths services, and their faculty and student leaders, cannot be forgotten. “Hurry up please, it’s time.'' With Highest Honor Science, Industry and Education CONVOCATION The word “convocation never meant to Mount Holyoke what it meant this year. The traditional term for our opening exercises, became a synonym this October fourth, for gala arrangements, visit- ing dignitaries, impressive behavior, and bus rides from Abbey to Chapin. The assemblage of educators, industrialists and scientists, included many famous names; and for two full days, the well known and the unknown, the teachers and the students, seriously discussed the relationship of “Science and Human Values. It was a very exciting and a very worthwhile ex- perience for everyone, and it is debatable whether the visitors were more impressed by the college, or the college by its visitors. Not many will forget the year when the front door of the Library was opened on Convocation, and people came from all over the world to walk through it. 9 “The Wayward Wus The gathering of the Clan FACULTY AND Miss A. Elizabeth Adams Mrs. Mary Mills Miss Alice Rigby Miss Grace Bates Miss Catherine Robinson Almost every one of us have a favorite professor, and almost every professor is somebody’s favorite. The importance of the faculty is shown in the com- ments that can be heard whenever we discuss our academic life. Rarely does anyone refer to a course by its name or its number, but rather as “Mr. Rox’s sculpture”,“Miss Shepardson’s radio”, “Mr. Cramer’s history”, or “Mr. Williams’ religion”. Once in a while someone might even say something like “I hate the subject and I’m flunking the course, but I just had to be in one of his (or her) classes.” Another way that this popularity of professors is illustrated is through the many invitations they receive to have dinner in the dorms with us on Wednesday evening, and too, by the eagerness with which we accept any invitation for tea or Mr. Edward Clancy 70 ADMINISTRATION Miss Harriet Newhall after dinner coffee at their homes. It is not merely the thought of eating that attracts us. It's really a lot of fun and a wonderful experience to know the people who tell you about the Malthusian theory, or that you've had too many overnights, out of their classrooms and their offices. However, there are times (between ten past and the next hour) when something serious is being ac- complished in the classrooms of Clapp, Skinner, Dwight and the other academic buildings on campus. Even in Mary Lyon there is often a busi- nesslike and efficient atmosphere. It is, perhaps the successful combination of social enjoyment and academic accomplishment that makes our relationship with the faculty and administration such an unforgettable part of our college careers. M iss Meribeth Cameron Mr. George Tovey Miss Helen Voorhees THE LIBRARY Reader's Digest Chief of Staff Behind the scene There are some places that a student doesn’t find until her Junior year. The Library is not one of these, for by that time, most students have found and established their own special spot, have solved such problems as how to keep the reading stand stolen from the girl in the next seat without having her steal it back, have managed to figure out the relationship between the catalogue and the stacks, and have learned how to plan that ten minute break for coffee so that it lasts for fifteen. The library is our refuge in times of academic stress, and most of us have learned to appreciate its great and many assets. Reader's Guide 72 Although the reasons we wanted to come to col- lege varied for each of us, one that was (or cer- tainly should have been) on all our applications was that we wanted to learn. No matter how deftly the phrase was turned, translated it meant that we were coming to Mount Holyoke with the idea of going to classes, reading in the library, and studying two hours for every one hour of class. In retrospect, however, most of us find that we strayed somewhat from the high ideals we had when we bought our first book or took our first notes so neatly. Not that we’ve forgotten our aca- demic purpose, but it has become a habit that once in a while sees spurts of genius, and at other times just continues to exist. And, as there is variety in our purpose, there is variety in our method, and in our achievement. Sometimes we study in the afternoon, in the library, taking careful notes and following a pre- cise outline. Sometimes we study for hours past midnight, still tast ing the coffee and cigarettes we had so much of earlier in the evening so that we d be able to stay awake later. Sometimes we get up AS STUDENTS Purity, Body, Flavor at 5:00 A.M. to study for a bluebook, on the theory that as the most relaxing sleep comes be- fore twelve o'clock, we would be refreshed and alert in the morning. Sometimes we study in the Stimson Room and fall asleep on the couches. Sometimes we study in the C.I. or Wilbur, eating a hamburger, ordering an ice cream cone and talk- ing to a friend. Sometimes we study in class, usually in the wrong class. Sometimes we study on the train to Hanover, or back from New Haven, at the bell desk, in the shower, at dinner, playing bridge, washing socks. We study in these places and others, and believe it or not, there are times and there are places that we never study at all. “t'p in the air. Junior Binhncn” “The Man in the White Suit I “All’s well that ends well.” COMMENCEMENT Commencement, it is the end of our college career, it is the end of our book. Looking back at the past four years, and at the many pages of our annual describing them, it is hard to think that the word “Commencement” really means begin- ning. We are so much more conscious of what it is the ending of. The many traditions that we accept from previous alumnae classes make up an im- portant part of our Commencement week-end, and it is with former graduates and graduates to come, with teachers and students, with parents and friends that we share them. It is at this time that our class, even if only for a short while, becomes the most important class. It is perhaps our last full meeting and it is our first meeting as equals with alumnae. Commence- ment, the little while before and the little while after, sees us in a double position, and often it is difficult to decide which direction is the one pre- ferred. We can look back on what we did, or look forward to what we will do, recall what we re- ceived, plan what we will give. From now on our complaints will be forgotten, and our pleasant memories long remembered, and Mount Holyoke will become part of our “Auld Lang Syne.” 77 . . . And as she joes through these ivy portals Aggie joins the Holyoke Immortals . . . f ALMA MATER Oh, Mount Holyoke, we pay thee devotion In the fervor of youth that is strong The courage of right is thy garland, Our lives, Alma Mater, thy song. So from East and from West now we gather, And united in firm love to thee, All the years are as one, and our loyal pledge Mount Holyoke, forever shall be, Mount Holyoke, forever shall be. In the light of a new day's endeavor Breathes the light of the old days that live. For what thou hast given we honor, But we love thee for what we can give. So when soft in a whisper thou callest For the treasure unlocked by thy key, Our achievements, our hopes, and our loyal faith Shall answer, Mount Holyoke, to thee, Shall answer, Mount Holyoke, to thee. $ I 1 v •yj - • V« .:: v: v ?v i v i v J :: • • ' I c . ■ V- .V-Va V -.V. 1 ■■-mm m-4 - . We sing our song of college years, Class, chapel, proms, and friends Through each the bond more tightly wends Binding our hearts here.
