Text from Pages 1 - 164 of the 1949 volume:

WsV WOr C H5o I M HIS is Mount Holyoke College. Here for all too brief a time our divergent paths meet to follow an ever widening road of knowledge Although we find our abilities are different and our interests are varied, together we have a story to tell about Mount Holyoke. So here are the highlights of our story of what we are doing and why we are here. wr E ARE not likely to forget Mrs. Ham’s invitations to afternoon tea, or the times Mr. Ham played the piano after Sunday dinner, and recited Shakespeare in Monday morning classes. Of such moments are the best memories made, particularly when these moments arc accompanied by warm friendliness and an understanding of the problems of eleven hundred girls. And so it is with deepest appreciation that we dedicate the 1949 Llamarada to President and Mrs. Roswell G. Ham. THE TRADITIONAL WAY LITTLE SISTERS The Bookrhop for feu Spread out the WELCOME mar When wc staggered oil the train dragging six suit-cases and ten hat-boxes, trying to act as though wc knew where we were going, wc would never have reached Mount Holyoke had it not been for our Juniors. Most probably we would have landed in the forbidden wastes of South Hadley Falls. The girls in the white dresses with blue armbands proved an invaluable combination of Dorothy Dix, Emily Post, mountain guide and walking encyclopedia. They guided us through the maze and confusion of the first few weeks. They told us about the right and the wrong way, the hard and the easy way. They were information center, mother’s shoulder, date bureau and guardian angel. As we took our own little sisters to their first tea it seemed hard to remember that we had been just as much at sea not so long ago. We felt quite responsible for them, especially on Hazing Day. And with Junior Show and the thoughtful little things they have done for us, we realize how nice it is to have— Little Sisters. 11 12 • Ants 7:59 A.M.- and all the windows in the dorms arc open. This morning everyone is out of bed, sitting in the dining-room or smoker. Bur there is none of the usual morning chatter of “blue books” today, or will I get a letter?” Silence has settled over the campus. 8:(X) A.M. and Mary Lyon begins to ring, breaking into the stillness; one, two, a nervous giggle and an impatient shout of Quiet!” Three, four, five we edge closer to the windows. Six, seven, eight, nine, ten - and no more silence. Screams and cheers announce Mountain Day. And so with blue jeans and picnic lunches, we take our bicycles and head for the Connecticut River or Mount Tom or Amherst to en joy this day free from classes. There are ten hours of pedaling up and down hills, scaling mountain heights and stopping at the cabin for cider and doughnuts. And when at six o’clock we return, tired, windblown and sore to South Hadley, we still agree that Mountain Day should come more often. MOUNTAIN DAY Ami the r at out-of-doon 13 Ami salad Br mint— Katy Mi j lone No sooner is everyone settled and classes under way than the campus is taken over by Llamie fever. There is much discussion about whom you are going to ask and from where, and then a great deal of frantic correspond- ence. When you finally get a Yes, I’d love to come,” there is hurried preparation and big plans. The room you find may be half-way to Holyoke, but the walk will do him good. Maybe there will be a hay ride if it doesn’t rain, and of course there’ll be a picnic on Sunday. Friday afternoon the weekend begins and you breathe a sigh of relief when your date appears bag in hand. The campus turns co-ed for three days and there is a deep undertone to soprano giggles. The dance Saturday night is a glad affair, the first of two all-college formals, and the floor is crowded. Sunday afternoon comes all too soon, and as you say good-by to your date you’re sure it was the best Llamie ever. It didn't rain, your dress fir after you had starved yourself all week, and you have an invitation to a big football weekend. oiiege JHIIl ’ pDA FOUNTAIM r ndwich- bar ERNIGHT • GUESTS A' Wc were jalopies, embarrassed by headlights, cross-eyed bv windshield wipers, and just for a day very conscious of our lowly rank. Sophomore year we were able to assume a slight air of superiority as we watched with sympathetically aching mus- cles, the Russian dance of the class of 50, and saw with delight their dilemma in trying to keep in place both a tall Cossack hat and a huge mustache. Our own little sisters, as flying saucers, we en- couraged loudly and protected with a vengeance. But it was only a prelude to the rough treatment wc gave, as stern and forbidding Seniors, to the deck of cards of ’52. The trials of college life From dinosaurs to shmoos and so the Junior Shows go. It’s the big night in our college lives the night the junior classes become immortalized with their 'better than ever shows, the night our big sisters meet our little sisters, the night there is much reminiscing. In the Griffin's “Stopped in Our Tracks' the fossils confused the student body and faculty of 1920, but we find that “Mount Hollyhock College has not changed much since then. We still have Junior Lunch, the nice geo- logical Peabodys, the revolutionizing Susans and the Endowment Fund. irtue took over for 1950 in ‘For Goodness' Sake ' and we saw Mount Holyoke achieve fame 18 The Big, Three by being the most virtuous college in a survey by Dr. Hymscy of Retort renown, by overcoming gangsters and of course, by just being ourselves. These shows belong to us, every minute of the writing, painting, music, rehearsals, laughter and the final performance. It’s the time we know we’re a part of Mount Holyoke. The moon and the night nnd you 19 Bookstore Brigade ABOU It teas a long walk South Hadley is a nice town. It isn’t big, but it has what we need Filenc’s, the C.I., Glessic’s, and the rest. It has Mr. Felice, who can reconvert anyone's heelless, toeless, or soleless pumps and moccasins into shoes their owners marvel at. Its gas station, besides offering gas and hardware to us, is the only place on campus where we can find out the real date for Mountain Day. The owner claims he can always tell by the number of girls who pump their bike tires on the days when we’re all guessing. And if there's something we can't find in South Hadley, the chances arc it will be in the college bookstore. They sell everything from tea- cups to cigarette holders and of course, books. 20 den it is Christmas time. One cold, grey dawn the sophomores come caroling, and one clear night the chapel Christmas tree lights go on. Of course, there is no doubt about it — it will snow the day we go home. But who cares? Good tidings, great joy, and vacation are in the air. P-JS T . Senior crew; Lift .1 print I be Prince and the Firebird By the time the grass turns green and the flowers bloom, it is May Day. Plans for the pageant have been in the making for weeks, and a secret vote taken to elect the most beautiful senior as May Queen. As the day approaches members of all four classes get together in a flurry of activity. On May Day itself, parents and friends arrive on cam- pus to see the panorama. This year the theme of the pageant was Stravinsky’s Firebird, and the story was told in pantomime with bright costumes and beautiful dances. The highlight of the day was the presentation of 1949 s lovely May Queen, Gail Sullivan, and her court. And as was only just, the rain held off till after she was crowned. 24 Th( M j) rr: Mutrs; Wb,taker; McQuiUen; SnUtv.ni, May Queen; Gribt; Western; Smith 5 :J Leadership tod.n for leaders tomorrow On top of old traditions arc new beginnings, and as they arc everywhere else in the world, new projects arc going on at Mount Holyoke. On the top floor of the liber the Psychophysical research unit is at work under a grant from the Navy. Down in the basement of Mary E. Woolley Hall students arc broadcasting their original scripts over the new' radio station. And in South Hadley and Holyoke they are leading Girl Scout troops, working at the Veterans Hospital and for the Y.W.C.A. All this is education in action, and those who have taken part in any of these activities know the pleasure of discovering that a college education is also a basis for living in a wider world. 27 GETTING AN EDUCATION Many days find the irresistible force of intellec- tual pursuits drawing M.H.T.'s, the immovable objects, to the ' libe. ' Through rain and snow the call to work overpowers the desired pursuit of correspondence or bridge. It seems too great an effort to pick up your notebook and get started in the direction of the library. The sun is shining but not for you. Individual investigation beginning with the card catalogue, thence to the stacks, and from there . . .? The college library is beautifully equipped to supply information on almost every- thing, from the history of the Hindu religion to the working of the cyclotron, and sometime in four years everyone does at least one important research project within its four walls. There is a feeling of satisfaction in such research as well as an oppor- tunity to play the martyr. And the sun is shining On!) four papers in three tins 30 Concentration in Desperation INFORMAL MOMENTS Out of the classroom and into a different world, so to speak. Or so it seems when you meet the faculty socially. Classes for the most part have to be rather formal affairs, and perhaps you can't con- ceive of a professor out of the atmosphere of the subject he teaches. But when your Lit professor comes to dinner you may suddenly find that she collects tea cups just as you do. Or maybe you dis- cover at tea that your Psvch professor is also an ardent Picasso admirer. You may find, to your de- light, that a member of the faculty who can assign two term papers and a volume of assignments, knows a great many funny stories, has been to India, or writes limericks in his spare time. Many students baby-sit with faculty children, or help with faculty teas, rake lawns or serve on joint committees. Education is a fifty-fifty proposition, and both parties to the bargain are usually willing to go more than half way. Air. Hawkins for lamb (hops Faculty Bonanza Ktmie vo n at Gits sit x H 1mt' i on? Shattuck’s walls reverberate with a re- action as first year Chemistry forgets whether the acid is to be added to the water or vice versa. It’s all in the day’s work. Smocks, dirty hands, paint, plastilcne and kitchen knives replace test tubes and microscopes for the potential Rembrandts and Michelangelos. A new world of creation is joining forces with science to make future homemakers more competent in that career too. 32 Creating in the it mho IN ACTION I Johnny shuns playmates and Susie shows leader- ship. Many of us spend time at the Jackson Park Nursery or the Skinner Settlement House. And for many this seems to have a more direct connection ¥ with post-college days than the anatomy of the earthworm, or whether the litmus turns red or blue. Child Psychology courses discuss in detail such things as when baby will cut his first tooth, when he will start to walk, and how his play be- havior develops. Class work is backed up by time spent in the college nursery school, and also by written observations. Looking back we will find that the afternoons spent in a variety of labs have showed us one thing above all. There are explanations for a great many things unknown to us before explanations that give us a good deal more confidence in ourselves. You couldn’t call the campus sprawling. Itjsn’t small, but it is compact, and after four years we know every inch of it. We have walked over Prospect and Pageant, smoked hasty cigarettes on the hill behind Clapp, and toiled down from Mandelle through the snow. We have enjoyed laboratories held on Skinner steps, and classes on Pageant in the spring. The buildings themselves— Clapp, Skinner, Mary Lyon, the Library are the landmarks on campus, and each one reminds us of something different. Clapp means sciences and English. Skinner is math, languages, and Group 111 extensives. More than buildings, they are the framework of our four years. And our faculty, we maintain, ranks with the finest in the country. We know them all by sight, and have had classes with many of them. We have read their novels, their poetry, their scientific articles. We have watched their sabbaticals, their MORE awards, their lecture tours with a certain pro- prietary interest. Our favorite courses are the ones they like best to teach. And, therefore, a student is something more than a point on a table of statistics and education more than a business. Economics Semnutr with Mts t Corn tock Spring fiver 34 Muste hath charm FORMAL Standing apart from an academic interest in the faculty and buildings on campus is a feeling of common fellowship. We know the physics building and lab theater as treasure houses of knowledge where we spend many hours. But we also know them as inseparable parts of Mount Holyoke. The | architectural structures belong to us as much as the I gems of wisdom Mr. Clancy and Mr. Dace have given us about frequency and acceleration or scenery and curtain calls. We remember the fear A touf) question, Mr. Clam s Lab Theater opening ntflst MOMENTS these buildings have held for us anticipating a blue book and we remember the pleasure anticipating a lecture on atomic energy or presenting a play. There is even more of this fellowship in our rela- tions with the faculty. We have found them under- standing and sympathetic to our flounderings in technical fields. We have seen them in the roles of intellectual and social advisors experts at both. But our greatest appreciation will always be for their interest and friendship. We can talk to them about our honor work and we can talk to them about our weekends and dates. We can greet them on campus with a colloquial “Hi!'' and we receive a hearty reply. They have made our four years memorable ones and now we say Thank you. 35 S.G.A. Officers: Cramer, L. Mairs; Gamble, Widoff, president. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION A well integrated student government is a vital part of any active student body. We value highly at Mount Holyoke our right to self government, our right to decide intelligently and fairly on campus activities and student regulations. The Student Government Association officers and com- mittees combined cover most of the big questions that come up for campus discussion, and with the help of the Representative Assembly find concrete answers to a great many problems. S.G.A. is not an organization superimposed upon an already ex- isting system, but in its own way it is the system. the foundation itself. Judicial Board is a part of the Association, but with its own chairman and board members also chosen by popular election. It is the job of J.B. to interpret the Association s regulations, and to en- force them in action. Students are responsible to J.B. when the rules of the community are broken, so that in the making and enforcing of its own rules, the student body is self-governed. In the years since the S.G.A. was organized, students have proven their ability to run their own com- munity. Judicial Board: C. Bell; Speers; Pkrry. chairman: Neid- linc.hr; Means; Willard Committee Heads: Gilllatt, Hoepfbr, Hammerman, Cramer. 38 FELLOWSHIP The golden glow of hundreds of candles in Abbey Chapel and a background of organ music it is a picture to remember. These candlelight vesper services are just one phase of the work of Fellowship of Faiths. The organization provides a unifying link among our varied religions by its programs of education, worship and service. With its campus conference and Sunday evening dis- cussions, it remains an essential part of our life at Mount Holyoke. Fellowship Officers: Roiikh rs, Mkans; Coopf.r, chairman; Ostendori . 39 On a campus traditionally concerned with world affairs, the International Relations Club does a great deal to keep the college well informed, and to rescue it from the legend of the ivory tower.” Regular current events dis- cussions serve to help us know and understand the confusion of events going on daily in the world around us. And this year, I.R.C.’s outstanding effort was the Twenty College Conference on Western Europe, at which important men of our day spoke concerning the vital questions current in their own special fields. Partly supported by the Carnegie Endowment, I.R.C. supplies research material, conferences and speakers for its large and active member- ship. The United Nations Institute at Mount Holyoke: Mr. Avirett of the New York Herald Tribune, Mr. Brodie of Yale, and Miss Goshorn, Secretary of the Institute. 40 ■ ” DANCE CLUB The Dance Club is probably the most active of campus organizations, for much hard, muscle- pulling work goes into the making of a dancer. The Club’s emphasis is on modern dance and self- expression, and anyone who can pass the try-outs is welcome to bend, stretch, and perhaps turn out to be another Martha Graham. Eva Gregg is the Dance Club’s president, and like many of its mem- bers is talented at choreography as well as dancing. Dramatic Club in action DRAMATIC CLUB Dramatic Club presents . . . and the entire com- munity attends. Opportunities for valuable experi- ence and enjoyable hours are provided for varied interests: scenery crew, painting and hammering, make-up, the proper application thereof, lighting, switches and cellophane, as well as actual dramatic experience. There is a never-to-be-forgotten thrill as the audience shows its appreciation, whether to those backstage or onstage. Ably directed bv Shirley Mutch and her committee heads, the calibre of the Dramatic Club has been vastly improved. It is a synthesis of four college years, a piece of Mount Holvoke that we will take with us. The college’s other publication, The Mount Holy- oke News, has proven its usefulness time and again with schedules, lists, and just plain news. Then there is Snowball, snow or no snow, in February; Soph Hop, Junior Prom, and Senior Ball in the spring. Before the weekend is over there are always more memories for vour scrapbook. liubt ‘ in the Wood r Two' company r Mount Holyoke still preserves its reputation as a singing college, and has broadened it since the day it earned that name, for now its music extends to all fields. The class choirs arc ever a joy to their members and to the college as a whole; the sleepy sophomores singing on weekday mornings, the juniors making our Sunday morning services a special joy, the seniors appearing at Sunday evening vesper services, and the freshmen coming as echoes above us in the Chapel. The Glee (dub is our pride and joy, the cream of our singing college. Its per- formance is always looked forward to as a highlight of the Christmas season, not only by present students, but by the many alumnae who make it a point never to miss the Town Hall Concert. 1 he College Orchestra is an active group whose joint concert with the senior choir was a new and appreciated event on the college calendar this year. Here is S.G.A. working every day in every way. House Presidents arc social organizers, sympathetic trouble-shooters, and most important of all, an active link between the officers of S.G.A. and the students. House meetings which they conduct include all the information from Representative Assembly, suggestions for more efficient run- ning of the house, plans for house dances and social doings. Each dorm usually gives a dance during the year, and this year South Mandellc for one has had a Christmas and an Easter party for children from a Holyoke settlement. Outing Club haven Almost anyone will tell you that at some time during her four years she wanted to “get away from it all.” Without Outing Club and its varied activities, life would indeed be darker. Whether it bean overnight trip to the Cabin, blazing ski trails, meeting other colleges for sings and square dances, or washing down the station wagon, all of us at some time or other, have taken advantage of what Outing Club has to offer. V I Grove exercises and the latere! chaw GRADUATION No class arrives at graduation without mixed feelings. And it’s hard, even for a yearbook, to put a linger on them. Some of the seniors in caps and gowns look forward to weddings in a few weeks. Some are always headed for careers already planned. And most of them are not quite sure what the next step will be. We arc no exception. Any senior would have told you on June thir- teenth that she couldn’t believe four years were over. The time is short but the distance long from that first trip through the front door of Mary Lyon to the last Monday morning with diploma in hand. Hard as wc try to remember ir all, the time runs together into courses we’ve liked best, the friends we’ve made, the traditional wav with all ¥ its crossroads and intersections. Like every other graduating class, we were conscious of the “last time” our last class meeting, our last chapel, our last day as undergraduates. Like all graduating classes, wc were told that we are the hope of the 58 future. And while caking the flattery with a grain of salt, we knew in our hearts it was true, and were grateful. Graduation festivities began Thursday night with the Mountain Banquet on top of Mount Holyoke. Here the seniors had their last class meeting, and sixty-six answered 'guilty” when the engagement roll-call was taken. Friday after- noon in a sober ceremony, we gave the incoming senior class our prized Skinner steps, and planted our ivy beside the library. Dot WidofF and Judy Perry gave the Ivy Oration, somehow likening the class of 49 to that “fresh young plant.” We thought it highly fitting that at least something of ours remains attached” to the Li be. We hope we I I look .is well! Our undergraduate days Friday night wc sang our good-byes at the Lake- Serenade. Our Little Sisters were at hand to give us a rousing send-off with the big and little sister song. Saturday morning we paid tribute to Mary Lyon at the traditional Grove exercises, by placing a laurel chain on her grave. Immediately afterward we were welcomed to alumnachood at our first alumnae meeting in Chapin with the reunion Our president and vice-president classes. Saturday afternoon the fathers matched their athletic abilities against their daughters' in the father-daughter baseball game, and came of] well the winners. It was a hot but cheerful con- test. Also on Saturday we proudly introduced the members of our major departments to our families. Sunday was hot and bright. We went to Bac- calaureate and to the President's reception, and graduation was almost upon us. And finally, Monday morning, in caps and gowns and unaccustomed hoods, we stood up to receive our diplomas. It was hard to remember this same- class as Freshmen, not very long ago. When it came our turn we rose to the occasion with what wc hoped was the proper air of solemnity. And sud- denly it was all over. Our class, the class of 1949, had graduated. 60 For incoming seniors, Skinner steps. And they still piny better baseball I I Mjss Harrier Newbal! Mr and Mrr. There have been intersections here and crossroads there—all of them part of the plan. And there have been signposts—set up for us with care through years of experience. With roots deep in that experience they point ahead—for those who like to blaze new trails for those who, (on the other hand,) prefer well-traveled roads. I Gweneth F. It embodies a principle upon which our success depends. It means the proper economy of money, mate- rials. and time, but always hearing in mind the kind of a yearbook vou wish to have produced and of which you will he proud. HJII learned to appreciate that principle a long time ago. It is for this reason that we have consistently advocated the coordination of all factors of yearbook production. W e are indeed glad to have been selected to produce this year's book. £ « , . o .v e s. n .1 v s a v e it.
