1 return Mount Holyoke College Library Archives, 8 Dwight hall 50 College Street South Hadley, MA 01075-6425 « t 946 Virginia Coon EDITOR Rosalie Kaufman BUSINESS MANAGER PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS SOUTH HADLEY . MASSACHUSETTS RUTH C. DOUGLAS iss douglass has the soul of an artist. She is a beautiful singer, an inspired lover of music. She is an artist, too, in passing on this talent and inspiration . . . She expresses the conception of music as a universal language binding people together, never for- getting that each piece of music has behind it the life of a particular people . . . She is a friend; she takes time to be interested in everyone. Her cheerful smile, young heart, and personal understanding have helped solve many a problem . . . We are honored to salute Miss Douglass as one who composes a beautiful harmony out of personal love for people, and respect for the universal. Mount Holyoke is a portrait. As the individual brushstrokes, we can only know ourselves, only express ourselves as a part of that portrait. The college exists in time and space. In time there are the continuing, developing and changing institutions which years of students have known. In space there are the larger groups and institutions of which we are now a part and whose appearance within the outline we determine while wc are here: the first days in September writh Convocation and meeting our sister class and friends . . . the chapel, P.O. and the libe . . . Mountain Day and Hazing Day . . . the varied student organizations . . . the classes, whether science, social studies, or humanities. These more inclusive aspects of college help us to sec the outline of Mount Holyoke’s portrait. And it is thus that we gain perspective. CONVOCATION Convocation is the academic procession, color, grandeur, vet simplicity . . . impressions of a great store of education, and of many other convocations long before we came . . . that feeling as freshmen of insignificance before such im- pressions, of newness and strangeness, of long years before we re seniors . . . then that feeling as seniors of pride yet a new insignificance in the light of how much more there is to learn, that feeling of familiarity with people and places, of how much we’ve changed while here, although the time has passed so quickly. I We want here s our 4 t'S;IS„htad rh'« s™-lc„t Mary Ellen Steer guides Fellowship of Faiths in its broad activities. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Association is new to Mount Holyoke. For two years students investigated other college governments and formulated a constitution suited to our own needs. Where formerly responsibility for government rested with faculty, administration, and students, it now rests with the students alone. Its success depends entirely upon group cooperation for the good of the whole. Thus, each individual has her own place in helping the government prove itself worthy of the work involved in creating it. The honor system becomes more signifi- cant since its philosophy is also that of individual responsibility. The world has shown a need for closer correlation between a govern- ment and its people based on cooperation among those people. Here at college we have a chance to train ourselves to meet this responsibility. Illinor Codina, Marilyn Cupp, Ruth (till, President, Aileen Cramer, absent. Ratbbun, Hilles, Gill, Baldwin, Chairman, Crandall, Funk, N - burg, Cushman. JUDICIAL BOARD J. B. is the guardian of the law.” It maintains observ- ance of the rules and the honor system, and this function can be truly effective only if the majority of students agree with these codes. If the rules seem fair, then ad- herence to them is vitally important; if they seem unfair, the students may act to change them. By having its cases printed in the News, J.B. has shown its desire for our cooperation and understanding. 17 Louise Randall, Chucky Pugh, Preside nr, Rachel Punk. • A. A. offers every student the opportunity to enter competitive sports in the inter-class, inter-dorm games, and rivalry has been started with Conn. College and even Amherst! A. A. also sponsors the annual Skating Carnival, and holds a banquet each December, distributing athletic prizes and awarding the Sarah Streeter cup. • Outing Club, complete with car, has two locations . . . the cabin for relaxed over-nights away from campus, and the fire place by Lower Lake for picnics, sings, and roasts. The song contest has become a tradition; skiing trips arc planned at the first flake of snow; inter- collegiate activities stimulate outside “friendships”! Filled each week with stu- dents’ letters, the public opinion col- umn has been the proving ground for new organizations and ideas. Here are Marge Anderson, editor, Gitt, Martin, Bell, Gangel, Noland, and Graves, working to meet the deadline. V . The honorary literary society of the campus is Blackstick. Its officers are Norma Gangel, Frannie Unger, Madeleine Munn, Miriam Trucs- dcll, with Mary McCullough as President. • Pan is the magazine for the expression of creative thought. Here are Karhie Sweeney, Sue Kelley, Madeleine Munn, Edna Staloff, Mary McCullough, Norma Gangel, Sally Rock and Margie Ennenga. 20 • International Relations Club keeps its 200 members and the campus aware of the effect of the nation’s actions on the world outside her borders. In so doing, it emphasizes the responsibilities of college students as active citizens in this post-war world. We associate with IRC: a current events bulletin board, intense discussions following student and outside speakers, and an annual intercollegiate conference. Sybil Smart, President, Laurie Gott, lit lie Schneider, Shakey Davis. We must make UNO effective! Together with Debate Club, IRC sponsors current events discussions every two weeks. J«k Mills r CHAPEL and FELLOWSHIP OF FAITHS • Impressions of chapel create a lasting picture . . . the rose window, the high altar, stone pillars, the little chapel with connecting windows, the white-robed choir, the tones of the organ, student chapel talks, President Ham and his Scriptures, I . Park’s van Dyke beard, Convocation, Easter, the Glee Club concert . . . 22 Kentfieldy Soderbergh Davies, Hatch’ field, Grigson, Irish, i w, President. • Fellowship is divided into three commissions: worship, service, and education. This last has held conferences on labor and race relations to stimulate our interest in these problems. Each of the three groups works on campus and in the neighboring towns and cities. • The philosophy of Fellowship of Faiths is found in its name . . to stress the things men have in common with each other rather than the differences. It is, as a result, non-sectarian in its membership and activities. Catholic, Protestant, Jew, Buddhist and atheist can come together, worshiping, serving, learning ... all working toward the brotherhood of man, implied in the word “fellowship.” The best expression of non- sectarianism in chapel is the choice of choir music. A broad selection of hymns and responses is chosen so that all will feel part of a service designed to blend the many religious back- grounds. • • There's a light upon the mountain • The Glee Club concert at Christmas is a highlight of the college year. After three months of rehearsals, that tinge of nervousness and the real joy of sing- ing carols reach a climax at the performances in Holyoke at college, and in New York Town Hall. Jack Mills Anne Davidson, Ruth Franz President, Cary Muller, Peg Col bet h, absent. • Dorm singing, caroling, serenading and the song contest add to choir and glee club to make this in reality a singing college. Holyoke Sings... I MOUNTAIN DAY • Mountain Day is freshness, blue sky, and shades of color. It’s waiting in the early sunlight for Mary Lyon. It’s hiking and exploring. It s stopping by a lake, look- ing down at a valley. It’s hunger and then sandwiches or cider and doughnuts. It’s taking a hot bath and sink- ing deeply to sleep. The mind is at rest. 25 .4 Half fitted SlumpJUbum is tike a Hallfiiuipped Soldier • The Iihe is a view of the sky through great windows, and angels guarding from the ceiling. It's books, some familiar, some strange. It’s a quiet carrel, a quieter Stimson room. The Libe Pur the art into it! Concentrate please. Our broadening influence from other nations. Classes • Classes sometimes arc dull Mondays after a memory-full week-end . . . but usually the mind is ready for what comes, ready to share ideas with stu- dent and professor. Cooperation does it. And another class of future college graduates grasped some of the meaning and worth of what it would encounter at Mount Holyoke in the next four years. 50 Nineteen Forty-nine ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ • Freshmen discovered quite early that college life had two sides- one learned, one ludicrous. They rose to the latter side admirably on Hazing Day when they were forced by us, their grim-faced, black-robed masters, to sputter poems, change tires . . . “Well strip my gears and call me shiftless!” There were other un- jalopy-like tasks such as proposing to strange men, but at four o’clock they had a chance to be refueled in a more p'easant atmosphere. '49 meets Miss New ha 11 • This year to you has been newness and fun, a separate entity. But now you integrate with the rest of campus into a full, swift life. The end seems far away, but as you slip into the year 1949, you’ll discover as we have that “all our years are as one.” • Sophomore reception gave our little sisters the opportunity to he motherly themselves. Each one adopted a forty-niner, called for her, and took her to Wilbur. The receiving line was the least formidable of any to be found, for in- formality was the tone. They gave another ex- ample of their talent in skits by following Mount Holyoke’s history from seminary days. Kenny Kennedy inspired gales of laughter with her rendition of an Amherst man, and Patti Peck was a friendly mistress of ceremonies. First row: Spence, President, Long. Second row: Butterworthy Cooke, De Klyn% K rsopp. • We re very fond of you, little sisters! You’ve been kind, talented, and enthusiastic. Kind when you backed us up at Junior Show with lunches and flowers, your special song, and the many surprises. Talented in your circus-like ring presentation, as well as your clever skit and beautiful class song. Enthusiastic through it all, and that includes your dawn-hour carolling at Christmas! In between the peaks, if you’ve felt a little left out, we hope we’ve helped. Nineteen The Zero hour Forty-eight... • South Campus has been the scene of many spec- tacles: a long line of mass activities of minutemen, zeroes, goons, and jalopies; the torch-light parade of the election campaign. But the sophomore circus was perhaps the most spectacular. Up from behind the gym, past Wilder and around the front of Skinner processed the great parade of sophomore lions and horses, clowns and pirates, fat ladies and wrestlers, a white-clad drum majorette leading the brass band . . . the class president in her chariot, and Betty Cooke as the derbied master of cere- monies. Then the lion shouted The ring, oh where is the ring? and a great replica was brought forth . . . Spring was a little late this year but at last we saw them beautiful gold licn-symbolcd rings with miniature . . . • The mood changes from color and gaiety to strange music out of the darkness. Through the midnight halls tramped our little sisters singing Christmas carols. Their bulging-angelic shapes opened doors, and their glad tidings floated into our consciousness. We crept out of bed and gave ourselves to the spirit of the occasion. But it was easy for us, compared to their pre-dawn rising, the heavy clothes and the broken slumber. After it was over the College Inn had cocoa which warmed hollow stomachs. • Yes, you’re our little sisters. We’ve greeted you in the beginning, protected you as zeroes as you buzzed the campus, loved your skit and song and ring presentation. But while we’re behind you as a class, we’ve found in you at the same time the basis for lasting personal friendships. 54 front row: Kewpnich, Johnson, President. Back row: Bars hay, Abrams, McM.Hlin, Parsons. • We were hardly out of the college cradle when you Juniors came along. Since then our paths have been almost parallel. First we played in the same gym classes, now wc share the same seminars. Through them we have developed similar outlooks. • We’ve known the same experiences for three of our four years . . . the Waves’ show, the Faculty Show, and the change in the College Inn . . . we’ve been together in three of the war years when we have lived a more limited existence. We have thus grown up earlier, if engagements and marriages arc an indication. Because we’ve been together longer, and ex- perienced college in almost the same period of time, we cannot help but have that close attachment of common memories. Nineteen Forty-seven ♦ 55 ■ It's Papa Who Pays • The Juniors ring presentation was thoroughly Egyptian to correspond to their class animal, the Sphinx. Impetus came from grand concep- tions of Moses in the bulrushes, Cleopatra (someone called them Cleopatra's court), and other aspects of the Nile area. The ring (its stone was of golden yellow cut) .... was worth the wait . . . • They’ve been original from the very first. Soph Skit was located in a men’s clubroom. The all-male cast portrayed the fathers of college girls . . . It’s Papa Who Pays, ' but apparently he loved it . . . Jan Eddy took the honors for maleness . . . the song graced a letter to one of the Holyoke fathers. • Show was a masterpiece of documentation and costuming . . . ’But they can never take away your education!’ . . . In a Little Hut in Zamboango” . . . “My dear Hydriotaphia” . . . the old promenade that was all promenade and no dancing . . . little Raymond Swing, in short, Tish Norwood . . . • They’ve had their big year, starting with nominating lists enlarged to include head of little sisters, handbook, and junior lunch. And so w'c’ve seen them, welcoming the freshmen, singing on Sunday, serving us junior lunch, en- joying their prom, beautiful in April. It's busy, but fun. 56 • On our graduation day, you’ll take over on Skinner steps. We’ll hate to leave, and yet we know you’ll do well in the positions of leader- ship. Senior year will he quieter, more serious. Work will mean more, minds will mature. College activities not neglected, yet there’s now an eye to the future . . . majors arc coming up . . . what about graduate school? . . . shall I marry him at once, now that he’s back? . . . what jobs are there for women? You’ll be re- sponsible members of college, but there arc other things coming up soon. • We re no longer living in the moment, but thinking of our stay here as being in cycles . . . it seems we’ve changed our garb.
