FOUNDER S DAY In the almost-dark of 6:00 A.M. seniors group about Mary Lyon’s grave, shivering a little iri their caps and gowns, handing frozen packages of ice cream to bands of sleepy fresh- men who come hurrying with that willing-to- try-anything-oncc expression to carry on with real fortitude this old tradition of Founder s Day. Later, in a flower-banked Chapin before noon, the seniors and faculty process . . . Crimson and yellow among the folds of black robes, music on the balcony. President Ham on the stage, the smell of flowers, a deep feeling for tradition relived here, and a sharp remem- brance that if is important that we can keep the deep meaning of the tradition of Holyoke through adverse circumstances in a warring world. COMMUNITY OFFICERS When we gall it Our college, we mean a lot of things. We mean our government. Mouse’ Titcomb as Head of Community leading our democracy, our Rep ' Council, representing us, the student body, before the administration, before the nation. We mean our Honor System protected by Judicial Board. Dottie Hollis Jackson as Chairman taking the re- sponsibility with her board for the maintenance and safeguarding of the honor we value so highly in every phase of college life. We mean this year our part in the war. Anne McDonald. Chairman of all Student War Service, leading us forward into activi- ties of every kind that give us the right to say, we help. We mean our yearly recognition ol our own power to contribute to necessary causes, and this year particularly we place it among the foremost activities of the college. Jan Pierson, Chairman ot Community Chest, setting our goal high, giving us the opportunity to prove this is no ivory tower ”, but a campus alert to the need of a nation and ol a world, and eager to do its part. We mean all those committees which are working in cooperation with these people, the part of each student integrally related to all that Mount Holyoke is thinking and doing. 20
