We who come for the first time or the last have put on our bright sweaters, said hello to friends and friends to be. The chapel doors are open. We have entered. This moment in the beginning of autumn, we listen for Mary Lyon s eleven strokes with excitement anil anticipation in our hearts, for the first time the seniors process in cap and gown. Freshmen side by side with their big sisters watch the new stateliness and think, soHuJd) . 1'he faculty march in; the choir sings; the president speaks. This is college. Sunshine and girls and a special feeling. This is part of yesterday and tomorrow — the Spirit of Tradition swelling with the music, with the even sway of the marching line this moment with all that Mount Holyoke has been and is. Though the world demands us, we take serenity and promise from this day. College has begun. CONVOCATION LITTLE Wi: KNiiw a bo IT our big sisters' before we came to college. The unity of Mount Holyoke grows strong through these, Our sisters. SISTERS 11 12 CIRCUS AT SIX Tradition is not only ivy walls and the hush in chapel before the Priest’s March. Later, in a flower-banked Chapin before noon, the seniors and faculty process . . . Crimson and yellow among the folds of black robes, music on the balcony. President Ham on the stage, the smell of flowers, a deep feeling for tradition relived here, and a sharp remem- brance that if is important that we can keep the deep meaning of the tradition of Holyoke through adverse circumstances in a warring world. The tradition is old: the words are tuned to today. Shall we not sav that we recog- nize this to be not all yesterday nor all today, but of all time? Shall we not say that it endures? COMMUNITY OFFICERS When we gall it Our college, we mean a lot of things. We mean our government. Mouse’ Titcomb as Head of Community leading our democracy, our Rep ' Council, representing us, the student body, before the administration, before the nation. We mean our Honor System protected by Judicial Board. Dottie Hollis Jackson as Chairman taking the re- sponsibility with her board for the maintenance and safeguarding of the honor we value so highly in every phase of college life. We mean this year our part in the war. Anne McDonald. Chairman of all Student War Service, leading us forward into activi- ties of every kind that give us the right to say, we help. We mean our yearly recognition ol our own power to contribute to necessary causes, and this year particularly we place it among the foremost activities of the college. Jan Pierson, Chairman ot Community Chest, setting our goal high, giving us the opportunity to prove this is no ivory tower ”, but a campus alert to the need of a nation and ol a world, and eager to do its part. We mean all those committees which are working in cooperation with these people, the part of each student integrally related to all that Mount Holyoke is thinking and doing. 20 PcIL r. Glee Club brings spring to the campus. The delightful swing of the Arkansas Traveller' sends ripples of delight through us all. They’re like us around campus, (even now we wonder which of us, when we are seniors, will walk like that in glory.) If not at a pageant, at night perhaps to Skinner, dressed in red. white and blue, proceeding across south campus be- tween lighted torches. lor a day some One is chosen, becomes idealized symbolic of beauty, grace and knowledge. IVY EXERCISES In thi Spring, we sense it even more, this Spirit we re talking about. Por a minute the seniors feci, these four years have gone too quickly. The others think, why, well miss these people. So for a time those last few days, we belong more than ever before to what is somehow permanent here. There’s the day we hope it doesn’t rain for Step Sing. But then when it does, we love it nearly as much in Chapin, and we can hear the Class Will read even better there. It’s worth, it, too, even if we had to stay up most of the night to write it. People are leaving all the time; ethers are coming back to see it all happen to some one else, and somehow our own packing isn’t getting done at all. But there's too much to do to worry about the mundane. It's graduation time. 30 STEP SING I Hi- weather's not always considerate. The day of the reception to be held in the garden if fair. Hut it wasn’t fair always. Just to prove it didn’t matter those times, we’d have a lovely time in Pearsons. Down the receiving line would go the parents we could at last connect with the girls we'd known for years. Juniors suspended in their new practically- senior state served punch and cookies, and for hours the indefatigable line would meet and welcome the steady stream of seniors and families. It was so near the end and the beginning. We didn’t stop to think about things. It was exciting, and we had to remem- ber everything, the things people said, the way they looked. The Hams were so gracious: time was so short. We had wanted to graduate, hadn't we? 31 Rein fora nnnts! Tbt Liist Mile. From right to left. WII i. wh wonder, this day in cap and gown, what has meant most to us? Will we remember that this is the last time, that things will forever be different because of this? Some of us will have twice watched part of our class march in on their graduation day. Without thinking them, we will remember many things, the first day of college. Show, the sun coming up over Prospect on Paster morning. We will carry within us much of this Spirit of Tradition that in these times has not shown itself lacking. In the late summer ot 1943, part of the class of 19-i-l graduated. It has shown itself adaptable, this part of college that is made up of things traditional. We have entered here, and because the world asked of us certain things, we have sought to instill this Spirit with the mobility of change. And it has become dearer to us because of this. GRADUATION 32 I This is Moi nt Holyoki that changes and is the same, which we may find always deep and enduring. It is her gift to us, and lives only as we give equally to her. This is going upward. Yet there arc more than these things. All out together. President Hum Mid Dr. Adams •11 jnecioiu L tout 99 THE SPIRIT OF EVERY DAY LIFE ✓ RED CROSS I'm Spirit of everyday is work and play, hut it is also service. The Red Cross activities which have found impetus with the war call us from our after- noon hour of leisure to the Mary Lyon Room to roll bandages, sew, or knit along with the faculty who are more loyal than we. But we arc always doing knitting outside of hours, dropping our hall of yarn in classes, sacrificing the efficiency of both by trying to read and knit at the same time . . . Jahodd. Thompson. This is the essence of our religious organization, the Fellowship ot Faiths. Its scope is vast and its activities extend be- yond our own campus so that we may have an oppor- tunity to serve the community of which this college is a part. Our rewards arc manifold . . . 40 Phelps, Situ won r, Spencer, Alden. A'bley. Hof ken. Sc buck. I Rom the Wednesday evening chapel service, peace and a lift for the middle of the week. From the candle light services, a symbolic beauty that leaves light and calmness within ourselves. From a week of discussion with visiting leaders of youth church groups, stimulation and awakening interests. From our own work in the nursery school, in the new recreation center established this summer in South Hadley, and our visits to townspeople, an oppor- tunity for service which makes us daily better able to play a part in the living in fellowship. We find our inspiration and our challenge in this organiza- tion. 41 Pugb. Nelson ( Pri-mi)I-:ni ). I trn worth. J.tcoby. All or VS, from California, Maine or Texas, have one tiling in common. We love our campus. It makes you want to do things. Not just scuff in the autumn leaves, or collapse gently into a snowbank, but vigor- ous. healthy things. Like running down a held madly after a ball, pouring out your energy into a long kick down the field. Or reaching out with straight, swift strokes across the ice. Glad of heat, glad of cold. Firm, definite things. Were young; were healthy. We re all members of the Athletic Asso- ciation. proud in our best casual manner over any awards we may get. There are a few white jackets on campus in recognition of the best athletes, but every- one will tell you you don't have to be a star to get fun out of A.A. 42 HOCKEY In the Fall, we keep warm by running, and the faster we run the warmer we arc. So when hunting for speed, we choose hockey. Up and down the field, tackling, dodging, playing this most popular of games. Practice and class games whet our appe- tites and keep us invigorated in the crisp afternoons. A game full of teamwork and action. ARCHERY Safely removed from the rest of the exercising population, the would-be Robin Hoods string their bows in the Fall and Spring, archery to train the eye and hand in steadiness. Retreating from the target with skill, twenty feet, thirty feet, then forty feet. One of the few who can hit more than the broad side of a barn door. SPEEDBALL It m i ’st be something! It gets us up to play eight o’clock games when the grass is like dripping sea- weed and the ball like molten lead. But it's a successful hybrid of soccer and basketball, and its more prejudiced enthusiasts say it s more fun than both its parents. Its year by year popularity shows SPEEDBALL to be a Holyoke favorite. 43 Now that Winter's comi . . . There’s skiing on bright icy days. Everyone tries it, bulky and lumber- some though we feel until we have mastered grace and the free swooping feeling that sets our spirits high. There’s skating at night to music and thaw- ing our hands over a tiny fire with cheer for our better warmth. There’s riding for the hardy. There's basketball which doesn’t depend on the weather, and so all winter we cheer or sprint across the floor, upward bound. 44 Wki.comi: sweet springtime; cold and grayness giving way to warmth again, and a chance to be out of doors. There's badminton inside as well as out, fun to swing at a weightless bird. And tennis, popular from nearly dawn to dark when the courts are ready, played here by nov ices and by champions. Golf, too, by fewer, on the course admired by all. Or baseball proving itself America's pet sport, calling us down to Pageant for afternoons and evenings of swift play. 45 V 4 Thi-:ri-:'s TH1: othkr kind of sport these days; the athletics of dish juggling and carpet sweeping. Time was we gave Saturday morning exclusively to sleep. Now it's Saturday classes, our turn to set tables or sit on bells. The halycon days found our late afternoons gaily nibbled away with butterscotch toast and cigar- ettes at the Bookshop; now we go straight from that last class to the Red Cross room to get busy with the bandage rolling. Instead of lingering over the after breakfast hand of bridge, we are in our rooms with dust cloth and broom (roommate’s little helper), hirst Aid classes have taken the place of those long Harry James and coke evenings in Wilbur. So from Hast and from West, now we gather. And united in hrm love to thee, All years are as one, and our loyal pledge Mount Holyoke forever’ shall be. Through the heart of a new day's endeavor Breathes the life of the old days that live. For what thou hast given we honor. But we love thee for what we can give. So, when soft in a whisper thou tallest. For the treasures unlocked by thy key. Our achievements, our hopes, and our glorious faith Shall answer, Mount Holyoke, to thee. 179 LLAMARADA STAFF Joan Morris ..........
