Sea Lyon. College was still college, except for the difficulties arising in the adjustments to life on the floating university, complicated by tfie presence of four Stamherst stowaways and Mrs. Middled itch. eminent writer on child psychology. I he college is deeply perturbed by three other problems in the persons of: I ut I utt. who disagrees violently with her father on the advantages ol leaving Egypt and going to Mount Holyoke, hut who is made to see the validity ol the fraternity pin institution; Oslo, of Stamherst, who wants a blind date to accompany him to prom, and who has a fraternity pin; and the Junior Class, which doesn t want their prom in Peking. Ly a combination of fortuitous circumstances, the plot is worked out to everybody's satis- faction: I ut I utt is introduced to Oslo's fraternity pin, and he gets a bid to the prom which will he field in Chapin. I he rhytl im ol Show was enhanced by two outstanding song hits, “The Blind Date and the Star Mong,” 1 1 1 LLAMARADA 1938 CLASS SONG The Class ol 1958 introduced their song in a novel skit describing the lile ol Pegasus among the gods and goddesses in heaven. Pegasus was a favorite ol Juno, queen of the deities, who thought that to “fluff about the clouds in a chariot was the ideal sport. For Pegasus to matriculate at Mount Holyoke, as some ol the class suggested, was sheer nonsense. But in the end. Pegasus, lured by the invitation of the Standard Oil man, decided himself to attend Mount Holyoke. I he class then bore him triumphantly down from the skv, to reign over them while they sang their song to the college. Out ol the fiery dawn, I he winged steed on high I riumphantly soars on I hrough black or blazing sky; We follow in its wake Our pegasus will not die. In the quiet hush ol breezes, in the wind s wild blowing gust. I here’s a whisper ol the spirit which now is in our trust Of Mount Holyoke's love and knowledge which seeks the right and just. Over the snow-clad land. Beneath the vaulted blue Dark mountains nobly stand. Immortal symbols true Of h idden power and strength, ||i, Thirty-Eight, for you! May we through the web ol branches, through brush, and blackest night. Find a shining lamp ol glory, or small and constant light, I o pattern all our living in beauty clear and bright. Spurred by celestial flame We catch a spark, a Hare, Monuments mark the fame Born from Mount Holyoke's care; Adventure calls our name To conquer where we dare. When the sunshine stretches golden across the evening view, I here s a chain ol friendship woven around the Iriends we knew. And our hearts rise up together, Mount I lolyoke, to you! 1 12 Gaines. I heir cooperation was wonderful, their action unified. Many girls in modern blue and white uniforms were much in evidence during the celebration. Many more performed less obvious duties. It is to all ol them that much of the success ol the Centenary is due. W hen guests and alumnae Irom all parts ol the world stood out in front ol the old Seminary building (the part which Brigham I fall took in making the cele- bration complete) and watched Mount Holyoke Opens it was as i! the lime were 1857. the characters—young women thirsting lor an inexpensive higher education. But behind the scenes was a story ol 1957 girls who had added to their academic duties hours ol rehearsal so that the significant day ol a hundred years ago might be correctly and convincingly portrayed. From this and the other services that they enjoyed giving few went home to rest, or to listen to Goldman s band concert. Everywhere there were exhibits to which they hastened, to stand for hours, explaining their departments, to add to all that had already been attempted lor the pleasure ol the guests. Any number ol students rushed eagerly Irom the Laboratory 1 heatre where they had been taking part in the production ol 7 lie Vest Pocket Standby, to slip into their costumes ol past decades and then to join their classmates at the Garden Party. 1 hese varied and beautiful costumes had been secured through the concerted efforts ol members of the student body and their friends at home. Now, together here, their hoops, bustles, parasols and lavender and lace were so authentic that it was difficult to believe that it was really 1937, instead ol the opening day ol the Seminary in 837 i.-|8 M-utiiiteJ LLAMARAD A and all die days ol die ensuing century. Many ol them wondered, however, il there had then been such sherbet as they were serving to the guests and incidentally partaking of themselves. ti The members of the Dance ( roup deserve a great deal ol credit lor their remarkable performances in Changing America. Kveryone had a friend or two who attended rehearsals loyally and proudly all winter, and helped the company to earn the tremendous applause given by the huge audience in ci lapin. I he freshman serenade was a masterpiece, and one alumna came all the way irom San Francisco lor the express purpose ol hearing the combined vested choir program. Lest someone term them martyrs, — self-sacrificing and silent cogs o I the centenary wheel, the students met at seven-thirty on Friday morning, to honor the representatives from Mount Holyoke’s sister colleges, and to begin the cele- bration jubilantly. Bagpipers, Maypoles and dancers, and finally — seniors jumping ropes on their way back to dormitories lor breakfast, made lor a youlhlul and exciting opening that otherwise could not have been achieved. No one was more greatly disappointed than were the students when brisk tiir and threatening clouds prevented the originally planned procession and Saturday morning ceremonies Irom being held outside. Standing as the guard ol honor had been thought ol not as one more thing to tax the furthermost extremities, those nearest the ground, but as a tl.rilli ng experience. Nevertheless, undaunted they went wherever they might go to listen to the speakers, sight unseen, and later gathered, with no loss ol eagerness, to await the shorter procession. I he Chairman of Judicial Board, Mary Tuttle, expressed the feelings ol the entire undergraduate body when, at the Saturday luncheon lor Mount Holyoke’s honored guests, she spoke ol how sincerely happy she was to be a part ol the Centenary. 49 LLAMARADA COMMUNITY COMMITTEES CENSUS COMMITTEE Chairman: Margaret Brondbent. 1938 ft leathers: Anne Edwards, 1939 Helen Gebbie, 1939 Al ice Himes, 1939 Elizabeth Manson, 1957 Elinor Werblin. 1937 Mary Wolf, 1938 COMMUNITY CHEST COMMITTEE Chairman: Elaine McCollum. 1937 treasurer: Sally Barnes, 1938 Members: Dorothy Bowie, 1939 M ac If I i ne Chittenden. 1940 Sue Howard, 1938 Margaret Jaques, 1937 CURRICULUM COMMITTEE Chairman: Barbara Ely, 1937 Members: Betty Abbott, 1938 Betty Caulkins, 939 Barbara Frantz, 1940 Barbara Palser, 1938 FINANCE COMMITTEE Ch airman: Ruth Abbott, 1938 LIBRARY COMMITTEE Chairman: V irginia Gingerick, 1937 Members: Marjorie Bell, 1938 Margaret Broadbent, 1938 I )orothy Goldstein, 1939 Mary Charlotte Lane, 1957 Jane Stewart, 1940 150 4 c ujhlccn -J-intiXxcX LLAMARADA w MOVIE COMMHTEE Chairman: A leathers: Mary Elizabeth Mallem, 1937 V irginia Cotins, 1938 Louise Bloomfield. 1937 Jeane Fisher, 1939 Harriet Griffiths, 1938 Gladys Linton, 1939 Elizabeth Ochiltree, 1938 Harriet Preston, 1937 Carolyn Rave, 1937 l.ois Rockwood, 1938 Virginia Walker, 1939 Mary Willett, 1938 STUDENT ALUMNAE HALL COMMITTEE Chairman: Members: 0 Louise Bloom field, 1937 Sally Barnes, 1938 Elizabeth Haight, 1937 ( atherine Leuthold. 1938 Mary McCarrell, 1937 Marianna McNees. 1937 irginia Walker, 1959 Mary Willett. 1938 STUDENT FI ND COMMITTEE Chairman: Members: Margaret Dyer. 1937 Alice Ayer, 1938 Doris Barker, 1937 Anne Calder, 938 Betty Caulkins, 1939 Winifred Durand. 1937 Carolyn Everts, 1939 Sue Howard, 1938 Marcia Kidder. 1939 Barbara McCIuer, 1940 Paith Millimore. 1937 Christine Peler, 1940 Harriet Roberts, 1938 Caroline Sawyer, 1940 Miriam West, 1940 VOCATIONAL CON IMITTEE Chairman: Members: Elizabeth Best. 1937 Sally Barnes. 1938 Martha Griffith, 1939 1 lelen Jones, 1937 !j! iiteteeu j -huuizeJi LLAMARADA uuX REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL Miss Cheek Eleanor Gitt Miss Doane Vivian Graves Miss Evans Dorothy Grumpelt Miss Oran am Penelope I larrison Mr. Hayes, Jr. Jean 1 lastorl Miss Jewett Barbara Hertwig Miss Kimball Alice Hetzel Mrs. Saintonge Alice 1 limes Mrs. I ruex Alice Jackson Miss 1 yson Margaret Jackson Miss V right Barbara Johnson Alice Allaben Mary Kendall Alice Ayer Clara 1 .udwig Isabelle Baird Elizabeth Manson Jean Benton Jean Manville Elizabeth Bonnar Katharine Metcalf Marion Branch 1 )orothy Mills Mary Buck 1 )orothy Monsees Elizabeth Buckelew Patricia Moore Jean Buffinton Lucie Nichols Dorothy Cabell Dorothy Olmstead Eleanor Caldwell Mary Pike Elizabeth Callan Doris Pullman Miriam Camp Margaret Robinson Anne Chenoweth Elsie Russell Janie Clark Catherine Sawyer Sarah Cole, chairman Mary Sheafe Sue Dickinson Ann Shroyer Elizabeth Didcoct Esther Sosman Margaret Dyer Rhoda Steckel Suzanne Ellis Jean Stout Betty Ann Erwin Helen 1 omlinson Caroline Everts Antoinette Treadway, secretary Marguerite Fenwood Antoinette Wagenfuehr Jeane Fisher Mary Waldron Bettie Foote Frances Warren Eleanor Foster Martha Webster Elizabeth Frost Mary Wick Elvena Gerner Elizabeth Williams Anne Wonders 152 LLAMARADA 4 jUty-S even COUNCIL OF EXECUTIVES Heads ol Student Organizations — this year the Student Centennial Committee Chairman— Sarah Cole Chairman of C ommunity Mary I uttle MEMBERS C hairman Judicial Hoard Elizabeth Stavers President of Athletic Association Carolyn kaye President of Dehate Society Dorothy Jackson President o) Dramatic Club Katharine Swenarlon President of Glee Club Ruth Friedson President ol International Relations Club Helen Chapman Editor in-Chief of Llamarada Marianna McNees Editor in-Chief o) the News Jane Hume i XV 11. Many came to find a haven from religious oppression, others to make homes in the promising wilderness, and still others were drawn by the strong attraction of gold. All were tilled with the passion to discover, build and achieve. I his they left as a heritage to their children. 1. New World RICH SOIL The driving lorces ol youthful vigor and energy found expression with the pioneer in the love ol the soil: in the South, with the establishing of a gracious mode ol living that was destroyed by the Civil War; in the far West, breaking out in a boisterous and riotous pattern ol lile; all of which came to an end with the passing of the frontier. 1. On the Plains 2. Dusk over the South 5. Dance Hall Frolic FALSE HARVEST I he youthful drive ol the preceding period became a mad rush lor material gain, a lust for gold. Making for mechanization and competition, it met with substantial expression in a rush to the cities where towering skyscrapers were erected as cathedrals lor the worship of Mammon. 1 he crashing ol this tangible evidence ol material security temporarily plunged the people into hopelessness and apathy. But through the darkness ol despair there was ever present the unquenchable spirit ol youth. 1. City Streets 2. A Cry in the Land NEW PLANTING Into the chaos ol a disintegrated society there may rise a fa I se Messiah of Dictatorship toward whom the people first turn in their despair. Here as the pattern ol regimentation began to take form under his iron wi II. they rose in rebellion and tore him Irom his pedestal. A regenerated society returned to the simplicity ol its early American heritage, but with a new sense ol social co- operation which had been momentarily lost in the mad rush ol competition. This return was manifest in the triumphant conception ol an integrated society. 1. Regimentation 2. Hymn of Faith 1 his program was presented during the Centennial Celebration by I he Dance Group and the Sophomore dancing classes. 165 LAMARADA 7 r t j in el ecu M mhiteJL L Kcrnny, Swcnarton, Dyer, Besl Welles, Cray. Outing Club is somewhere on Mount Holyoke. It doesn t do any good to explain, hut if you happen to he walking up the mountain road, and il you happen to see a rough trail sneaking oil to the right, you are in luck, and very observant Once you have found this trail lurking in the hushes, summon your mountain goat instincts, start climbing, and keep your eye on that ribbon ol white smoke rising from the lire made by the heelers who got to the cabin first. If there is no smoke, you d better sit down and think. he cabin has too much protective coloring lor a novice at exploring. II you are fond ol lining your tummy with good wholesome victuals, your lirst sight ol the cabin interior will be most pleasing, since the table takes up most of the lirst lloor. As lor the other thirty-six stories, they are occupied with luxurious suites, which the managament whimsically chooses to call bunks. It has the latest in sweeping staircases, and your entrance may be a wow, if the rungs are too much for you as you are lowering your dignity. You couldn’t really say that the structure is air-conditioned, but you won t feel any drafts at all, if you sit near the fire place. I he kitchen is very modern, too. Everything is so compact. With nature sprawled at your leet, you can get up at dawn and tramp on it. Try a sunrise from the top of the mountain. A sunset will do as well, but we II have to leave it up to you to decide which is the more opportune. You can have a wonderful time forgetting it all. if you have something to forget. In the meantime, roll up your blankets so they will be transported back to college. You don t want to stagger down cliffs with them yourselves. HOUSING Mount Holyoke lias finished her first century with more than fifty buildin gs, and over 260 acres of land. It started out with “an edifice, 94 feet by 50, and ten acres with huckleberries growing near the road, and further away, a blackberry patch caused by a rough ravine.’ plumbing, and furnishin gs that the times cou Id give. I he development ol the col- lege necessitated the addi- tion of new buildings, but the original one continued in use un til it was burn ed in 1896. 1 wo other very serious fires, that in Lyman Williston, and that in the original Rockefeller were setbacks to the growth of the campus. Th is original bui Id ing, which was made possible through donations varying from six cents to $1000, was a simple structure, but pro- vided with the best heating. 94 iifhlcen jM-muitcl LLAMARADA PROBLEMS Among the additions to the campus while Mount Hol- yoke was still a seminary were a library, the first science building, the observ- atory and the green house. And unless 57 are engaged tliis year. They’ll all he mountaineers all ni ght long. Since factories are but legends. And buttons rarely found. Some people think now that butt-on field Is tlie name of that spot of ground. 213 LLAMARADA «.J THE LAST LEAVES There are magazines lor epicures, financial kings and physicists. And magazines lor business men, librarians and classicists. For carpenters and fishermen and even statisticians. For debutantes and gentlemen, including politicians; Whatever va Ik of life it is. it has its publication. The butcher, baker, doctor, farmer all want information. I hese magazines keep coming out every month or week or day. And probably no one ever wades through all that they have to say — But just the same it seemed too bad that the class of 37, Being able to read, had no magazine to take with them to heaven. So we slaved away on these campus slants in our liny rooms under the eaves. And now that were done, it’s hard to confess, that they only make LLamie s Last Leaves! But in days to come, they’ll remind you again ol the fun, the lood and the weather, 1 he theatre, the studes, the government, and the quizzes you took together. I here II be only this issue, and never another—you can t expect a perennial From a class that is graduating once and lor all in the year of the college centennial. 214 LLAMARADA SALIENT SLANTS Many years ago, one line October alternoon, Mr. Hammond said to a group ol freshmen: Young ladies, you are the Centennial Class.” We hadn’t thought much about it then, but be- fore long there was No Doubt in our minds, although there continues to be some controversy over what you get when you add one hundred graduating classes to 1857. No matter what you get, this has been some year. The fun ol being seniors comes just once, that is, unless you Hunk. Of course, there are a good many ' lasts’ —like the last Mountain Day, the last sophomore carol seren- ade, the last vacations, and the last midyears. But il you get leeling too sad, just remember that you don’t have to have sophomores for serenades, and there are pretty good mountains in Switzerland il you want to know what dizzy height means. As for vacation —wrangle your one week holiday so that it will coincide with alumnae re- unions at Mount Holyoke, and then you can come back and talk about the best days ol your life, midyear exams and term papers. And when your daughter arrives some twenty years from now, to reg- ister as a freshman, she will probably have to take swimming tests along with vocabulary tests. But yank her out ol the chlorine long enough to remind her that the great class ol 1957 had a lot to do with raising money. We were smart—didn t we get the chance to hear Richard Bonelli, Harold Bauer, Arthur Fiedler and Albert Spaulding, and still help the swimming pool fund? Mount Holyoke went into the radio field this year, too—making her debut over station WSPR in Springfield, with two series ol programs, the last of which were also broadcast over the Colonial Network. Of course, this may seem rather primitive to your daughter who has a television radio set in her car. but it thrilled us within an inch ol our lives to hear students talk- ing smoothly over the air, when they had been scared rigid beforehand. It was either that superhuman power, or the stony glare of the mike that did it! 1 hey all imagined an audience listen- ing in. too, just so they wouldn t leel too foolish. Mount Holyoke students theoreti- cally reside in South Hadley, but they certainly spread themselves out during the course of the year. I here is the Glee Club ol 125 undergraduates who gave carol concerts this year in Holy- oke, Boston, New York and Washing- ton; there is the group of thirty-six students who went to I Iarvard and Radcliffe for the annual Model League of Nations Assembly; the delegates Irom our Outing club who visited the clubs of various other colleges, and debaters who went to Bowdoin. We don t have to mention all the people who went to the Darthmouth Winter Carnival, or 215 . cteen Jinnixd LLAMARADA unX Lntif—dr'cveu series ol house parties, or to Amherst. Pardon the denouement, hut this para- graph is getting too long. We spent a lot ol time this year writing songs, and designing costumes and collecting old gowns for the Cen- tennial. and pouf, it was over so quickly that even Gold man’s hand sounded as if it were running instead ol marching. We’d like to give you a report ol Commencement too, in our salient manner, hut all we can do is to prophesy that the Great God Rain will he among those present. If he is, it will he about the hundredth time since the college was opened, and if you knew any history at all, you’d know that was an excellent hatting average. 216 C ujLtcen jJ-lunXrc LLAMARADA uni Jhittn— 2 17 1'uicteen ,r l tinA cA LLAMARADA uthi JU,— 'c 'cu THAT WEATHER Week after damp week, students have been lorced to the conclusion not only that OlcI Man Winter dis- approves ol Jackie Frost and everything nice, hut also that the students dis- approve ol stubborn Old Man Winter. Life is a labyrinth, as it is, and Weather only adds superfluous corners. It has messed up the wardrobe prob- lem— each student is forced to peer into dark closets each morning deciding what-to-wear today instead of trickling into a ski suit, which does not even have extra trousers to complicate things. And this anaemic winter lias given the gym department a nightmare. Instructors were courageous, and spoke words of cheer and hope at each rainy session, but their optimism laded in February along with the remnants ol the fringes ol snow conceded us by the Hoary-Headed One. Students played ping-pong and were read Cornelia ()tis Skinner, while others took up fencing. Flashing foils wins ked through the air in place ol the icy blasts. Some optimists planned three carnivals, but the Weather whimsic ally remove d the ice at the last moment. Not everyone bore wi th the weather as bravely as the gym department did. Coronet, the pint size artistic magazine, replete with shots ol onion rings and boiler pipes. Stage, and Vogue. I-iterary discussions usually led sooner or later to Gone with the W ind, the whole 1036 pages of it. But a key to the real leisure time reading interest ol the college is in the piles ol magazines, read by Ireshma.i and senior alike, both with her knit- ting in hand. Although the romances in the American and the Cosmopolitan are all concocted by a formula, they are always welcome relief from long periods ol Orth and Cushman or Schlechter. This creature Leisure is just a speaking acquaintance ol most college girls, but tKey speak ol it so intimately, even quibbling as to whether it should be called Leeshurc or Lezli ure, when obviously, it should be called in lor being so long overdue. A Ireshman just passed by, and when asked what were her views on leisure time she gazed mournfully at I he pile of books in her arm and at her ink-spotted fingers, and solemnly stated that she knew nothing about it. Leisure too'% pure means those rare split seconds ol eternity when you don’t have anything to do, and when you re not thinking of something that you ought to be doing. This delicious state ol affairs occurs three times a year—in September, the night before you begin dealing out class cards; be- tween semesters when your notebook is just a desert ol clean white pages; and alter the last exam in June when you may consider yourself ei tlier Va, Vi, % or all educated. The members ol the laculty think that th ey have this question of time all settled — 15 hours of classes, 50 hours ol preparation, and the other 8 5 hours in the week to be wasted in sleeping, eating and recuperating. But I hey lorget the hours spent lor quizzes, papers and reports, and the eons ol time that you have lo spend just think- ing about what you are going to do. Of course, while you are thinking, you may be sitting on pageant or in a tea room, or wa Iking around the lake, or even on the trolley to Holyoke. And this just about ends our theories on leisure, because we have to start think- ing about that quiz, so we can go away this weekend. 726 ram LLAMARADA l 'lU 227 uiL'teen J-lnn ?c LLAMARADA mni Lttl:f— = cven V Ff I AT FELLOW FOOD Dearest Mom, I do wish you'd hurry and send me some more lood.
