I DIANS TIE FUR 2nd PLACE I OC ACTIO With the Mount Gilead Indians being a leading con- tender for the MOC basketball championship, local sport's fans showed renewed in the game. Under the leadership of their new coach, Dale Creamer, the Indians rolled to a 10-9 season record, and posted a 5-2 record in MOC action. Highlights of the season were victories over Wynford, Buck- eye Valley, Pleasant, and teams in the Cardington Holiday Tournament. The showdown game in the MOC race pitted Mount Gilead against cross-county rival Highland for the league co-championship. Unfortunately, the Indians lost the game by a disappointing four points. The defeat put Mount Gilead in a 2nd place tie with Buckeye Valley in the MOC. Special recognition went to several players on the team. Junior Kent Baker was named Captain of the All- League 1st Team, selected to the Coaches' All-District 1st Team, the Coaches' All-District Player of the Year , AP and UPI All-District 2nd Team, AP and UPI All-State Special Mention. Rick Bending was named to the All- League lst Team and the Coaches' All-District 2nd Team. Co-captain Chris Kubbs won the team's Scholastic Award. David Brown was recipient of Marion Power Shovel's Dig In and Do It Better Award . Jerry Cooper was named the team's leading Defensive Player. Kent Baker led the Indians in scoring, rebounding, and freethrow percentage shooting. 10 DIANS UPSET RI ER VALLEY RESERVES The Mount Gilead Reserve Basketball Team did not exactly have a spectacular season with a 3-15 record. There wereg however, times during the season when the team played excellent ball. The Reserves best effort came against one of the best reserve teams in the area, the Indians defeated the River Valley Reserves who Enished the season with a 16-2 record.
