Did someone say, It ' s about time we had a school or We ' re all ignorant; we should learn about everything ? How did they know what to learn or how to learn it? — CW ' (This yearbook features free writings from English classes; they are identi- fied by dates preceding the writings — i.e., Sep. 29. Since each free writing is a fragment or slice of our lives here at Mount Everett-the feature appearing on pages 4 through 1 1 is entitled School Slices. ) Sep. 8 — Today our very first passes of the year were handed out, on the very first Monday of the year. It was so depressing to see a little dot by the 1 on the pass and then to look down at all the numbers descending to 38. To think about the long year ahead is too discouraging. For now it ' s just one week at a time. — S.T. Oct. 15 — Have you ever noticed when you are walking down the hall — and you are the only one in the hall except for one other person — you become nervous because you do not know whether or not to say hello? I always stare at my books or at my feet. I guess I am afraid the other person will not say hello back. — M.E. TOP: Kelly Granger and the universal pass BELOW: John Makuc and Hannah Pedersen pose for the no-hello concept. (SCHOOL SLICES 2 CONTINUED) - ' ■ ; 5? Nov. 5 — It was the old sct-thc-lockcr routine. I had just walked down the hall without a care in the world. I opened my locker and CRASH! my English notebook fell to the floor! The notebook, being in a sloppy state as it was, was even worse. The whole back cover was now torn off and the front following right behind. Things always seem to happen at just the wrong time. — T.LJ. RIGHT: Michele LaPoint demonstrates the effect of opening a rigged locker. H Sept. 17 — My desk is a happy desk; it sits in Mr. Davis ' s room in the second row. Everyday it is here to greet me when I come to English, and without fail someone has seen it fit to write all over it. So I clean off the writing on him and he gets a big smile across his whole top. He loves it when I write on a piece of paper that is on top of him because it tickles him. He is like a friend to me. — S.O. Left — Bob Seiger making a desk happy. (SCHOOL SLICES -2 CONTINUED) Nov. 7 — I have a friend who sits in front of me in most of my classes. She never does her homework unless I am on her case about it. I ' ve decided that I will let her flunk by not nagging her, but then I will feel guilty. Friend, please get going! — S.O. RIGHT: Aror. Michalski with a friend-prodder. 3 r B ii I 2 8 Sep. 11 — Well, today I will probably have to give my speech and gosh! am I nervous. I really hate giving speeches — especially in front of this class. I ' m also not all that thrilled about the subject. It really is the pits. I sure hope that by May or June this will all be a lot easier — although I doubt that it will be. It is just one of those things I can ' t feel at ease doing. The only thing that helps is the fact I know that several of my friends are just as nervous as myself. — N.S. LEFT: Jessica Beckwith presents a speech to her Career English IV class. ■■ I (SCHOOL SLICES 2 CONTINUED) Nov. 5 — I give up. My friend and I were just starting to talk again after all those fights. and now she ' s telling all these people that another friend and I hate them! I just totally give up. See why I hate school? Stupid people get me down. Also, proposition 2 : passed. Why can ' t people ever think about how these things a ffect the below-18 group? But no, we aren ' t citizens yet! Give me a break! — B.S. RIGHT: Some days pencils don ' t stand a chance. rt I m I 5 ' 10 Nov. 14 — Sports? What a subject! If there is anyone who can claim the least amount of knowledge of sports, it ' s me. However, I do know about cheering from the sidelines. Basketball? Well, if you asked me to describe it, I ' d say you start with a jump-ball cheer: Tip it, tap it our way. That ' s the beginning. Then it ' s Down the court, up and in; that ' s the only way to win. Oops, we lost the ball! REVERSE DIRECTION! Foul shots? Super! Do like the Army does — shoot it! Do like the Navy does — sink it! Then — halftime — individuals. More scoring — offense- defense. Finally the buzzer and screams of JOY and sorrow — hopefully this year, MUCH MUCH MORE JOY — It ' s all over; we WON THE GAME!!! — K.J.W. Right: Kathy Jo Wartella, feeling more joy than sorrow. 11 ■■ ' it ' :X;) ,. :-■. BELOW: TOP PICTURES: Peggy O ' Connor with an IBM; John Makuc; Bob Candee; Terry Unsderfer with an Oldsmobile. BOTTOM: Kelly Johnston throwing the softball; Ray Ferrin; Sara Davidson and Karen Shanley; Jon Beattie on the tailgate. fei ' XI No Respect by Aron Michalski ■M % Nov. 21 — I remember back in the good old days in the other wing when the only respect the older kids got was by means of fear. They would use threats on you and those threats would work! Nowadays kids are very smart-alexy when they talk to seniors. It ' s a shame they never learned respect! You have to fight your way through the wise cracks before escaping the wrath of the little ones. BELOW: A seventh grade class takes over the shop. They ' re just so ... so ... un- seniorish. It must be terrible to be a sophomore — you ' re so stuck in the middle, but ... I was one once . . . wasn ' t I? Nov. 21 — I know a sophom ore who is not a genius, but he has a good mind when he puts it to use. Last year he did really bad in school. He flunked English so he has to make it up. During the summer, he told me he was really going to do well this year. He was going to try a lot harder. First quarter marks came out; he flunked every single class! Boy, was I disappointed in him. I told him so. He got extremely mad at me and told me to mind my own business. We are close friends, and we always try to help each other. The next day I found him in the library doing homework and studying. I hope he keeps it up. — C.A. Nov. 21 — I was walking down the hall feeling very crummy. As I passed one of them, she said, Hi. Next to her was another who also said, Hi, how ya doin ' ? I walked to my locker feeling slightly better when the clincher came. An arm was wrapped around my neck. Caught in a strangling hold I had to retaliate. I swung around and moved in for a bear hug. But the only thing I saw was the back of a sophomore running down the hall. — S.B. I myself am friendly with many of them. As a matter of fact my sister is a junior. Juniors are all those little creatures running around through the halls and classrooms just waiting to take over when the seniors leave. Maybe Mr. Chamberland or Mr. Consolati might thank them, but it is rare that students give them thanks. They may not have to say, Thank you, but within themselves most think of the personnel appreciatively. LEFT: Mr. Rooney trims the grass along a driveway. 49 B Mu? The cast and crew had fun pulling together the play itself. After a postponement, the show was on, and Director Gillian Seidl ' s set was lit. The long, sometimes unrememberable court scenes were saved by a dose of Mount Everett wit. This drama was a little different from previous plays because it was more structured, but (to the cast ' s delight), everyone was surprised with the ending. CAST Leonard Vole . . . Most runners at the end of the season are happy with the results. It is true that Cross-Country is an individual sport but the team is what most runners care about. If you have a terrible meet and your team wins thats what is important. Cross-Country has given me more satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment than any other sport. Sep. 26 — Field hockey is definitely my sport. I get so much fulfillment from it. Not only is it aggressive, but it takes extreme techniques and talents in order to take that little white ball down the field with control. I love to play field hockey althouh the phys- ical condition you have to maintain through- out the season is sometimes hard to man- age. The main thing that it takes is devotion and concentration — even when your are nearly exhausted. You just have to push yourself a little bit more to get that extra satisfaction. The basketball never seems to bounce the right way for us. I think that the other teams must put a magnet in the ball because they habitually come up with it. I remember one game when we had seven chances in a row to score, but the basketball would not go into the hoop. That ' s how it seemed all year — the basketball would not go into the peach basket. Sure, there have been ups and downs — a six-game winning streak followed by a five-game losing streak — but overall ours has been a very respectable team. It is respected throughout the league for victories over Pittsfield, Taconic, and Greylock. and it is respected for the 18-point comeback against Wahconah. The girls have offset some of the feelings throughout the county that Mt. Everett teams are automatically losers. We at Mt. Everett know that we ' re not, and those in the county have reason to realize it too. Sheffield, MA 87 4R MIA )NALD TO THE CLASS OF 1 ON YOUR GRADUAT Spring is flowing on, away, As summer heat and length of day Replace the grays of river mists With lavenders of sweet, dew-kissed Violets and lilacs. Soon The friendly sun and butter moon Will no more look upon the youth Of new-hatched chick or wren. Forsooth ' Tis now the time for timid fawn To wander out and greet the dawn Alone, and sparrow, too, to try Young wings, courageous heart, and fly. ' Tis time for rushing, laughing streams To venture forth; fulfill their dreams Of merging with slow drifting tides Of seas far off. The fog that hides . The valleys, too, will rise high o ' re The mountain-tops, and disappear. Go, dear ones; we wish you strength To search the world ' s vast breadth and h We wish you courage, self-esteem That you may realize the dream You hold your own. We wish you love, And faith in Him who, from above, Shall mark the path and light your way As you set out on life today. Yet, though from us you now depart, Know you ' ll be ever in our heart. mlm K!
