Gee ARROW on Page 6.3 A senior, by dictionary definition, is a per- son more advanced in rank, in age, and in wisdom. To kids in the lower grades, the definition partially applies, with us being incredibly large, very mature, and seemingly almost grown up. The high school underclassmen just don't agree with the seniors. They feel very competi- tive toward us, always trying to outdo us in sports, scholastics, and originality ibut not successfullyj. Ask a teacher what a senior is and his first reaction is, A senior is someone who sudden- ly finds himself with more responsibilities than ever before. They are the school leaders. Ask a senior what a senior is and you will find that being a senior is a lot different from what you would expect. It is the very busiest time of our high school career - what with college applications, demanding teachers, and graduation requirements. It's hard to set a good example when you've got a biology test, student council meeting, vocabulary exam, and a yearbook deadline all on the same day. Seniors have a lot of work and a lot of respon- sibilities, but we also have a lot of fun on top of it all. Sarge . - - V 91:5 -wi - 1+y1g,,wYf,m rff. ., 1 5 19, N ., UA. Stage V of the district's curriculum model is now being writ- ten, and there will be two years of trials and polishing before the district's evaluation for accreditation comes up. Grading standards are now under study by the faculty, and recom- mendations in this area will undoubtedly af- fect course standards. Also, the national trend toward competency exams is felt at Mount Ev- erettg should the state mandate minimum com- petency tests, as expected, the matter of pre- paring the greatest number of students possi- ble toward mastery of required skills will be a major concern. lgfllf -...O x 4... -s 11' ---5 ' -s Jr- s -x .1- i ,- - I Pictures - right, top: Guidance counselors Mr. Krol and Mrs. Brigham, middle: English and social studies teacher Mrs. Callaghan, bottom: new social studies teacher Mr. Collins, trainer Mr. Duchardt. Besides administrators and faculty, there must be personnel to take care of processing library books, to plan, prepare, and serve hot lunches, to administer health services, to handle atten- dance and academic records, telephone calls, and correspondence, to meet and help visitors, to make appointments and distribute sched- ules, to manage the physical plant and the care of grounds, to distribute supplies and keep the school clean, and to take care of numerous other jobs that continually require attention. There are rarely days when you have a boring study hall. There is usually some work to do. It may be a business letter for English, studying eosinophils for biology, or even learning how to flip pancakes. School is not all work, there are times to enjoy yourself, but one must learn when to be humorous and when to be serious. Certainly one of the people who would know is Mr. Dunham. - ' - Robert L. Dunham has been a mathematics teacher at Mount Ever- . ett since 1957. During that time he has seen many changes not only in ,ravi . ,Ai people but also in the curriculum. He saw the New Math come in, d I the advent of Illinois math, and the current rise of the calculator. ln ,. this school he has become as fundamental as Pi itself. 5 - Mr. Dunham has many hobbies-such as clockmaking, sketching, A . aviation, and even motorcycle riding, He has advised a number ot gg clubs over the years-from a Kite Club to aviation ground school. He tries to help his students in as many ways as he can. lt doesn't matter how bad things seem, because one class with Mr. Dunham helps to 'uv' brighten your day. Mr. Dunham, we wish you happiness, all the chalk you need for lunch, and many curriculum changes to come. i 1 A -.1 tit is-tl-V: .-, ill ' '. L x ig, 'ff ,. The I.V.'s end- ed their season with a successful 10-2 mark. In the Berkshire County Meet on October 22, the varsity placed fifth out of ten teams, only two points away from the Southern Division winners. IV. finished third out of ten teams. At the Western Massachusetts meet held in Pittsfield on October 29, the varsity ended with a very respectable eighth of twenty-two teams in Division II. In spite of team defeats, in a sport like cross-country one never really loses. A person can always compete against his own best time and win, even if his team loses on that particular day. In cross-country one can only win. Gs is Best Wishes Leo Segalla SEGALLA'S SHELL Canaan, CT Q is 5' A ' leafy- ii JENNIFER HOUSE ISCOOD REALTY AGENCY INC. Youth and inexperience were against the Eagles, but they put up a good fight. Their ability to play football stood out - better than their record indicates. The Eagles showed potential - Rich Sturchio broke a single game record with 27 tack- les and a seasonal record with 156. First year players put on some good showings but did not have quite enough experience. The Eagles are growing in talent while other teams have already hit their peak. Mt. Everett is looking ahead to some great seasons, not letting their previous losses discourage them. Seven seniors will be lost to graduation, but they will remember a team that did not quite make the playoffs and of 23 guys who did not lose heart. g5 f w SCH EDU LE 1977 17 24 O15 O22 O29 N12 Lili.. The girls' skill and determination to win were evident from their first game when they beat Pittsfield 5-1 at our field. They gave their best effort and placed second in the Berkshire County League. Once again they participated in the Western Massachusetts Tour- naments but lost 1-O to West Springfield. All in all, it was a good season. '44 H -.A 'S 941- f sf .- qf G Lw,:.s ' U .V , .. . You prepare for the match the night before. It is the night be- fore when you reviewed your moves. It is the night before when psyche yourself for the match. And it is the night before when you promise yourself that you will win. The whistle blows, it is your game now. The coach and team can only sit and yell advice from the side. A mistake, you are losing. The cheering from the side increases, the team will not let him down. Suddenly, with supreme effort he is again on top. The team goes wild yelling, PIN, PIN, PIN, PIN, PIN. It is over, six minutes have passed. He stands at the center of the mat, a victor. This year has been a special year for the wreestling team. Not only did they have a very successful sea- son with 15 wins and 6 losses, but they also broke a win-loss record that was set in 1967 by the boys basketball team.
