Th Preshm.m Class elected Rite O Bryan end Garrett Sbona to reign as king end queen over the Mardi Gras. These tired ole folk» take time out to rest. Some have even gone so far as to remove their shoes. The music starts and the more energetic members of the Student Body step up the tempo with a bit of Rock 'n Roll. Mrs. Helen Lum's freshman English stu- dents pay strict attention to their worthy instructor, that is. all except a few preoccupied gentlemen in the rear of the room. 23

For the first time in the history of Di- ablo, four freshmen students were se- lected as Tvoicol Freshmen. They are LEFT TO RIGHT: Mike Sweeney, Linda Dominquez, Bob Berglund and Dani Kay Saxton. Eager frosh wait for Hal to snap their picture for the annual while Connie Stevens mans the cl pbcard. Freshman Cleanup Day rolls around once more and these ambitious fresh- men do their part to help keep our campus clean, while two lazy seniors look on. Another first for the Class of '61 was Diablo's first Freshman Career Day. Students attended an assembly in which many speakers from various professional fields spoke to them. 22

Every noon Per lined up like other Diablo- ans to buy his lunch at the Dog House. Per Tore Mjelva comes to Diablo from Aandalsnes, Norway. He and many others from all over the world came to America last August, through the American Field Service, an organization which brings over foreign students each year to study in Amer- ican schools. Once getting in the groove. Per was in no way different from any other Diabloan when it came to activities. He managed to bring a little bit of Norway to Mt. Diablo and to Concord. 24
