Hand-In-Hand, Math Is A Shop Tool INDUSTRIAL ARTS For the boy who hopes someday to leam a trade, the Mount Clemens High School industrial arts department is very helpful. All of the courses teach the background of the trades, and in this way help the boy to decide which trade he is particularly interested in. ln woodworking classes, the boys learn the techniques of handling wood, laying out patterns, and the actual building of objects. Printing classes turn out much of the printed material that is used at IVICHS. ln the beginning classes, the boys and a few girls learn the fundamentals of type and the methods of setting type. The more advanced classes print up the library and hall permits, posters, tickets and programs. The drafting classes teach the boys the fundamentals of architecture and drawing to scale. In advanced classes, the boys make a complete set of house plans. Both teachers' cars and students' get a good going-over in auto-mechanics class as the boys learn about the workings of cars. Last but not least of the industrial arts courses is the metal shop. The boys learn welding and machine shop. FACULTY FACTS MR. DONALD B. GERKEY, B.S., MA. Mathematics And Industrial Arts Go Jim Henry draws out a geometry problem on the blackboard. MATHEMATICS With the increasing interest in science and outer space in this country has come new interest in the mathematics depart- ment of Mount Clemens High School. Formerly, most students who took any math courses were planning to go to colleege. This is no longer quite as true as students who are taking the general and business courses at MCHS now take mathematics. Many different math courses are offered at Mount Clemens High School. Most business training students take one or more of the commercial mathematics courses. One course is bookkeeping. Particularly popular among general course students and others who need more background before entering more difficult math courses is general math. This course teaches various mathematical processes which are useful in daily life. FACULTY FACTS MR. The Library Supplies Many Of The Source sv- Geoffry Sirmay, Donna Erb and Zita Lozen carry- on with their work in their library methods class. SOCIAL STUDIES Probably one of the widest ranges of courses is offered by the MCHS social studies department. History, geography, economics, government, sociology, and this year a new course, foreign relations, are available to the student. Each student is required to take at least two of these courses, United States history, and United States government, which is taken in the senior year. The rest of the courses are elective. The social studies department of Mount Clemens High School offers the student many opportunities to elect several interesting courses. LIBRARY Expand was the watchword of the Mount Clemens High School library dur- ing the 57 - EDS school year. The library added several shelving sections as well as many new books in both the fiction and non-fiction Fields. Few students of MCI-IS do not use the library a great deal. Therefore, each year freshman English classes visit the library, and the librarian shows them around the library, explaining the use of various things such as the card file, dictionaries, Readers Guide , and many other reference materials. Nadelle Levine, Sallie Lewis, Mike Malbin, Steve Levine, Janice Moore and George Lane make up a panel for discussion in their international relations class.
