Mathematics And Industrial Arts Go Jim Henry draws out a geometry problem on the blackboard. MATHEMATICS With the increasing interest in science and outer space in this country has come new interest in the mathematics depart- ment of Mount Clemens High School. Formerly, most students who took any math courses were planning to go to colleege. This is no longer quite as true as students who are taking the general and business courses at MCHS now take mathematics. Many different math courses are offered at Mount Clemens High School. Most business training students take one or more of the commercial mathematics courses. One course is bookkeeping. Particularly popular among general course students and others who need more background before entering more difficult math courses is general math. This course teaches various mathematical processes which are useful in daily life. FACULTY FACTS MR. Carry A 'Made At M.C.H.S.' Label HOMEMAKING DEPARTMENT Cooking, sewing, child care-these are just a few of the skills which are taught by the Mount Clemens High School home economics department. Cooking classes are carried on in MCHS' modern food laboratory. Starting in the ninth grade, the girls begin to learn to cook very simple foods. They also learn the basic rules of nutrition and how to buy food carefully and economically. As the girls continue in these cooking classes, they learn to cook the more complex dishes and they also study nutrition in greater detail. ln sewing, the girls also start out learning the basic fundamentals of hand and machine sewing, and they make several simple gar- ments. ln the more advanced sewing classes, the girls learn to select materials and patterns, and they sew more complicated clothing. Child care courses are conducted to teach girls how to feed, handle and care for the infant as well as the older child. The girls study training of the child, the right toys and books for children, and many other phases of child care. MUSIC DEPARTMENT All of the musical groups of Mount Clemens High School are part of the music department. These include the band and orchestra, and all the singing groups such as the A Capella Choir and the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs. The Band and Orchestra are two of the indespensible organizations at MCHS. Keep- ing up our school spirit at football games and representing MCHS at various band festivals in Michigan are just two of the functions of the Band. The organization presents concerts during the year and plays for pep assemblies. The MCHS ACapella Choir is another busy group. Besides participating in the annual operetta and singing for several school assem- blies, the group also presents public concerts, and often represents Mount Clemens High School at other schools and state festivals. Many students who want to get in the ACapella Choir first join the Girls' or Boys' Glee club to get practice in group singing. All of these groups help to make the MCHS music department outstanfcling. 9 gi Pat Gillett . 9 if , I ws: we 3 Some band members don't play all the time. At this rehearsal the drums got a rest. Grouped around the piand for an informal songfest are accompanist, Jill Ball and choir members Jolyne Johnson, Carolanne Gobble Don Chapman, Carol Sue Donaldson and

Hand-In-Hand, Math Is A Shop Tool INDUSTRIAL ARTS For the boy who hopes someday to leam a trade, the Mount Clemens High School industrial arts department is very helpful. All of the courses teach the background of the trades, and in this way help the boy to decide which trade he is particularly interested in. ln woodworking classes, the boys learn the techniques of handling wood, laying out patterns, and the actual building of objects. Printing classes turn out much of the printed material that is used at IVICHS. ln the beginning classes, the boys and a few girls learn the fundamentals of type and the methods of setting type. The more advanced classes print up the library and hall permits, posters, tickets and programs. The drafting classes teach the boys the fundamentals of architecture and drawing to scale. In advanced classes, the boys make a complete set of house plans. Both teachers' cars and students' get a good going-over in auto-mechanics class as the boys learn about the workings of cars. Last but not least of the industrial arts courses is the metal shop. The boys learn welding and machine shop. FACULTY FACTS MR. DONALD B. GERKEY, B.S., MA.
