IQF37 Fiiy , , l Girls, Basketball This year's Basketeers, coached by Miss Claire Horan, were very successful in their en- deavors on the court. The Mount Carmel Township High girls played eight games during this 1936-1937 campaign, and six of these skirmishes were scheduled with Frackville, Girard- ville and Ashland. A set of two games with the Mount Carmel High girls completed the setfup. The varsity, with Rita I-lumpf as captain, had a wealth of talent in Mary McGraw, Rita Cannon, Agatha Ficca, Mary Palembas, Mary Cannon, Regina Moleski, Rose Manley and Dolores Pinamonti were indispensible aides. The Township girls went down to defeat in the opening game of the season with the Frackville lassies and our home game with Girardville ended in a tie. This game was the most exciting, holding the fans' attention until the Final seconds of play. As scheduled, we tangled with the Ashland team on Ashland's home Hoor and much to our credit, it was Town- ship all the way'-ethe Bruin lassies experiencing little difficulty in winning the game. After this victory the Frackville girls invaded our court only to deadlock the second battle of the SCBSOII. In the second game with Mount Carmel we were victorious only after a closely fought game. Playing a return engagement on the Township court our lassies repeated the victory, out in the front at the outset we widened the margin as the game progressed. Cn February 24, we played Girardville's Ginger Girls on their own court, but despite the fact that our young ladies took off to an excellent start we lost out in the final half of the game. Our final game scheduled for the China Bowl with Ashland was canceled. March ll, at a meeting of the future makers of girls' basketball history, Agatha Ficca was unanimously elected as Captain of the 193711938 team. HELEN KARLOVICH E K M?-1 Q A ' f'

1931 oy,s Basketball Beginning the '36 season with a veteran team the Mount Carmel Township basketball team played an independent schedule that kept the ball rolling. ln eighty-one days we met twenty opponents and totaled up a score of 685 against 508. While high scores were run up against Mount Carmel, Danville and Mahanoy Township it was noted that no opponent victory was a one-sided affair. Exciting games with Coal Town- ship and Shamokin were closely fought, and a victory and a loss marked the two encounters with Kulpmont, our traditional rival. In the opening contest the Golden Bears dropped the first inter-scholastic game to a veteran Frackville squad of lanky lads. Against the Mahanoy Township team our players gathered more field goals than the opposition but our players failed to take advantage of them. Motoring to Old Forge on Friday of December l8, we were set for a tough game and we were not disappointed. Although Ioe Langton proved to be the chief point-getter, the entire squad played heady ball and showed splendid cooperation. Starting with the Mount Carmel dribblers just before Christmas, the Township basket- teers opened up a winning streak that was broken only by Shamokin and Frackville. The trays with Coal Township in February were excellent displays of power, speed and accuracy but the scores piled up against us. Snapping this four-game losing streak, the Bruin dribblers crushed a good Shamokin team and scalped the Ashland crew in the last fray at home. The termination of the 1936-1937 basketball season brought to a close the high school sport's careers of Leonard Eshmont, Toe Greco, Ioe Sebastian, Toe Langton, Harold Yentsch and Paul McGee. Ioe Biros as next year's captain, Paul B iksi and Walter Matsko remain as a basis for Coach KarloVich's team. Iosami GRECO Forty-nine
