1937 Football The Golden Bears under the tutorship of Coach Al Masciantonio finished the most successful season of football in the history of the school. Determina- tion, grit and cooperation were the outstanding qualities shown by the Bruins. The Mount Carmel Township Bruins made their Eastern Conference de- but a success by sidetracking their traditional rivals, Mount Carmel. The team outplayed its opponents by a wide margin according to statistics of the game. The Bears racked up 15 first-downs to 10. Trailing from the opening quarter, when Captain Leonard Eshmont plunged over the -goal line to climax a sus- tained drive of 65 yards, Mount Carmel found it impossible to combat its op- ponents on even terms and finally suffered defeat at the hands of a superior team. The game ended 6-0 and was played before 5,000 fans. The team took - or a strong Frackville Eleven. The game played in Frackville's new 550,000 stadium was witnessed by a crowd of 6,000 fans and again Mount Carmel Township was victorious. After this hard-fought victory Mount Carmel Township found itself for the first time in history in first place in the Eastern Conference League. Next, the Bears journeyed to Danville where Co-Captain Eshmont thrilled the crowds by making five touchdowns, one being on a 90-yard runback of the opening kickoff. The final score was 31-15. The schedule seemed to get tougher as we went along, for we met our other traditional rival, Kulpmont, and battled to a 14-0 victory. ln this game our little center, 'AStan Katchick broke up play after play. The boys sported new togs for our next game. Luzerne came down to furnish a tough battle but Township again came out on top, 15-0. Mike Mat- sko, a sophomore guard, played a Bang-up game and was in the Luzerne backfield more than their own backfield men. The only defeat our team suffered was at the expense of a strong Ashland team. Disappointed but not dismayed by this loss the Bears began the home stretch with Selinsgrove, Freeland and Girardville. Winning these three games we found ourselves when the season ended among the first ten in the final East- ern Conference standing. Co-Captain Eshmont, the Green Ghost of the gridiron, will be lost by graduationg also will Co-Captain Menapace, who was an aggressive lineman: joe Greco and Mighty Mite : Walter l-lomiak and Ralph Colross, giant tack- lersg Peter Masciantonio, heady signal barker and Vincent Kwiatkowski, a re- serve lineman. Our next year's team will be centered around our two remaining Lettermen, Thomas Washko and Michael Matsko who played so well in the best season ever witnessed by the school.
