Senior Class History Class of '58, Which Began With Fr. David and Left Une Year After The Mount Carmel High School Senior Class of Fifty-Eight met as a group for the last time-in this world-on june 1, 1958, at Commencement Exercises in St. Clara's Church. After this final meeting, the Class of '58 ceased to exist as a whole, in the physical sense. But it will linger on for a long while in name and in spirit. For what will this Class be remembered? What did it accom- plish while at Carmel? What did its 209 members take with them when they left Carmel? YVill this Class ever meet again? These are the questions that come to mind as the Class itself begins to split up. This Class will be remembered for many things. It was the first freshman class to have Fr. David as principal. Our 4 years at Carmel were his first 4 at this post. And our Class was the last one to really know Mike Murphy, the beloved gym teacher for 33 years. He died during our Junior year, and many of us attended his funeral at St. Clara's. VVe were the first to use the Student Center for 4 full years, and the first to use the new Library gl Careers Room. Our 4 years saw the introduction of French, Biology. Speech, Reading, lk Library classes, and the start of a baseball team, a speech team, a Student Arrangements Committee, a Car Club, a Record Club, an Art Club, a Radio Club, an annual Science Fair, and the Mary-Day Speech Symposium. During this time the school got a new gym floor 'n scoreboard, and a new parking lot, and a develop- ment program was begun. During our Junior year we helped to make the last rafiie a success, and contributed heavily to a record Mission total of over 558,000 Our Senior Class was the first to benefit from a new Student Guidance Program. As Seniors we won 40 scholarships and our inexperienced and very light football team surprised many by fighting gamely to earn a tie for the South Section crown, Carmel's 8th straight. In the same year our Light- weight basketball team made the play-offs, our Heavies finished third in the De Paul Tournament, our Wrestling team beat Notre Dame's second string, our baseball team beat the League Champs twice, our Speech team won 10 trophies including first place in an International Speech Festival in Toronto. For all of this. our Class will be remembered. By doing these things, the Class of '58 earned an important position for itself in Carmel,s History. As Freshmen we were all true 'fBennies.'l At our 14 Murph , Is Now An Integral Part Of the Great History of Mt. Carmel first Pep Rally, Fr. Finan told us the rules. We were introduced to Murph, who in turn introduced us to the scapular 'n the gym. We went to Mass in the Memorial Chapel, saw our first game, and received the first report card. The Honor Roll saw 22 of our names. Among those in various activities were 13 in Fresh-Soph football: 25 in basketball, including 5 on the varsity. Thege were 7 wrestlers, 6 swimmers, 22 X-Country 8: track men, 16 band men, 'n 8 bowlers. As we became Sophomores, we began to earn the title 'fMen of Carmel. More of us were active this year. In football, 8 helped the varsity win South Section, while 22 others were Ponies. In basketball we had 3 Heavies, 4 Lights, 6 Bantams CQ Flys. There were 12 wrestlers, 21 runners, 7 swimmers, 3 golfers, 20 keglers. Our interests spread to other fields: 7 ,joined the new Speech Club, 4 tried journalism, 6 took up music. Our junior year was even busier. Twenty of our number made the football varsity: we were well represented in the other sports, including 7 baseball players. Debate claimed 4, 7 worked on the 'Lite, 5 on the Oriflammeg one on SCOOP. The year passed quickly: and soon we were wearing our rings. Then came our ,Iunior Prom, 'fGaite Parisiennef, On Honors Day 20 were named to the Honor Society. Suddenly we were Seniors. Ten of us started on the football team. Fr. Rudolph's scholarship class included 25 of us. We all went to College Night, most went to the Homecoming, and many attended the Football Banquet, honoring our champs. Seniors led the way in all sports, and most teams had good years. Twelve were professed into the Third Order. NVe took over the school's journalistic endeavors, 'n under our leadership SAC did a great job all year on the dances. Prelude to an Ending was aptly named for soon after the Prom came final tests, Honors Day, and finally, the real ending-Graduation. We, members of the Class of 1958, take many things with us as we leave Carmel-knowledge, happy memories, good training, all the things that a great school can give to its students. But most important of all, we take with us a devotion to the Brown scapular and great love for the Lady whom the scapular represents. It is this devotion to Our Lady and her scapular that will in the end do more than any thing else to bring the Class of Fifty-Eight together againain Heaven with Mary and her Son.
