SI Conquistador ’65 Mount Camel M. S. Cos Angeles, Calif. ; Diversity yet . . . Unity Students at Mount Carmel High School enjoy the large diversity in activities offered to them. The opportunity exists for each stu- dent to participate in varsity athletics, Student Government, Class activities, and Religious and Academic clubs as well as Social activities. These activities enlarge the experiences outside the classroom and occupy an important place in the student's daily life. In spite of each student's various activ- ities and the diversity in activities among all the students, a spirit of unity is almost in- herent in the Men of Carmel. The El Con- quistador Staff illustrates the diversity in student life at Mount Carmel. Each member of the class of 1965 graduates with a dif- ferent set of experiences to draw upon, yet all are united under the guidance of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. 3 REV. EUGENE J. McCALLEN, O. CARM. Dedicated to the administration of Mount Carmel as well as the scholarly minded Math students of our school, Fr. Eugene James McCallen has instilled in his students a liking for his Irish wit and respect for his right hand. This year he is celebrating his twenty-fifth jubilee as a Carmelite priest. 4 BROTHER LAWRENCE BROWN, O. CARM. Brother Lawrence Brown, known affectionately os Brother , is the only remaining brother on the faculty of Mount Carmel. He has the dubious job of handling the study hall each day and is one of the busiest men on our campus. Brother is celebrating his twenty-fifth jubilee as a brother this year too. Therefore, we the members of the 1965 El Conquistador Staff wish to extend our humblest congratulations and dedicate this, the 1965 edition of the El Conquistador, to these two illustrious Carmelites. 5 EL CONQUISTADOR '65 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Paul Muff ASSISTANT EDITOR Greg Williams SPORTS EDITOR Juan Rodriguez CLASS EDITOR Robert Hiss ACTIVITIES EDITOR Rod Miller BUSINESS EDITOR Lance Williams SENIOR EDITORS Larry Blankemeyer Michael Russell Gilbert Rosas JUNIOR EDITORS Dave Palenchar Stan Kolodziej Bill White ART EDITOR Carl Flahan 7 Contents FACULTY GRADUATES UNDERGRADUATES...........48 STUDENT GOVERNMENT.......76 CURRICULUM 82 9 POPE PAUL VI 10 11 Very Reverend Brendan Gilmore Prior Provincial The Faculty of Mount Carmel High School clearly follow the El Conquistador's theme of Diversity and Unity. Every Faculty member possesses an excellence in his specific field, yet all are unified with one goal . . . the education of the Men of Mount Carmel. 13 Principal FATHER EUGENE J. Me CALLE N, O. CARM. Mount Carmel's Principal, Fr. Me Callen, leads our school through each school day. Besides handling the numerous responsibilities of a high school principal, he likewise bestows his knowledge of Mathematics upon the Trigonometry students of the senior class. We of the El Conquistador Staff are proud to have dedicated this yearbook to him, and more important- ly we are proud to have him as our principal. Vice-Principal FATHER JOEL MOELTER, O. CARM. Father Moelter, better known to the students as Father Joel, handles the behind-the-scenes affairs of Mount Carmel. Teacher of Religion, Speech, and Art Appreciation, he is one of the busiest members of the Faculty. We take this opportunity to congratu- late Father Joel on his fine job as Vice-Principal. 14 Fr. Carmel soon became an outstanding college preparatory high school. A swimming pool, gym and cafeteria building were added in 1940, the priory in 1950. Additional classrooms were blessed in 1951 by Cardinal Me Intyre. In 1948 Mt. Carmel received the Award of Merit from the University of California, an award given to the most outstanding private school with students at the University. In 1950 it received affliction with the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Since 1933 over 4,000 young men received their Christian education at Carmel. Many former Crusaders are now leaders in civic and religious affairs for their communities. We of the El Conquistador Staff congratulate the faculty and students of Mount Carmel on their 30th anniversary. 47 Class Of Vice-President RAY VALENCIA President DAVE PALENCHAR Secretary DAVID REYES In their first year as upperclassmen, the Juniors have shown that they are prepared to assume the leadership of Mount Carmel High School in the 1965-66 school year. Carmel Crusaders. The team's record does not reflect its true ability. The Crusaders were successful in defeating some of their toughest oppon- ents, yet against teams of a low calibre they floundered and found themselves unable to achieve victories. The triumphs over Loyola and St. An- thony's will long be remembered by Mt. Carmel fans. The Crusaders were also victorious in two of the most exciting games ever played in the Carmel gym, a 52-50 victory over St. Bernard's and a 60-59 victory over Pius X. And, of course, no member of the team will ever forget the week-end road trip to Santa Maria. Although the Crusaders finished the season with a mere 10-13 record, they can be very proud of themselves for the showing they made this year. 135 136 Collins pops from the corner Collins on the rebound J4t.
