When all the members of a symphony orchestra unite their efforts, they produce beautiful inspiring music. When all the stu- dents of a high school unite their efforts and participate fully in the planned pro- gram of their school, they too produce a theme that is gratifying to all. This year the keynote at Mt. Carmel has been PARTICIPATION and in true Cru- sader spirit the Men of Carmel have joined forces and made participation part of their lives. To participate means to share with others, and whether it was in the class- room or on the field or in the grandstand, the Student Body proved that Mt. Carmel High is truly second to none. DEDICATION Dedicated to the teaching of classical languages at Mount Carmel for ten years, Fr. Bernardine Kangley, O.Carm., has given of his priestly zeal to hundreds of students. Many have been started on the road to educational achievement and spiritual holiness by this self-sacrificing Carmelite. He was born March 8, 1919, in Wilmington, Illinois. He was ordained on August 16, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois. For the next seven years he taught at Joliet Catholic High, Mount Carmel, Chi- cago, the Carmelite junior seminary, and worked as a parish priest in New Jersey. Since coming to Mount Carmel in 1954, he has exerted an influence on his students which is beyond the knowledge of man. Therefore, as a token of our esteem and affection, we, the 1963 El Con- quistador staff, humbly dedicate this annual to Fr. Bernardine Kangley. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Leaders in Christ........... 7 Faculty ................... 10 Classes ................... 14 Student Government......... 68 i Activities ................ 74 Sports ....................104 Advertisements ............172 5 POPE PAUL VI The Senior Class of 1964 is graduating during a period of moderni- zation unparalleled in Catholic Church history. The decisions made by the Ecumenical Council will deeply touch the lives of every Catholic. We, the class of 1964, offer to the Holy Father, Pope Paul, our most sincere prayers that he may guide his children through the perilous times ahead with unfailing wisdom and never-ending love. 6 James Francis Cardinal McIntyre Archbishop of Los Angeles DELEGATES OF CHRIST Most Reverend Kilian J. CAUfDSNIA HONI HU l-llll To the Graduates of 1964: This year you are embarking upon a new life, a life for which you have been preparing during your years at Mount Carmel High School. Throughout those few short years your teachers have endeavored to implant into your minds the knowledge which will help you to be worthy citizens of the United States and of the world. Likewise, they have tried to give a spiritual foundation upon which you can build your future lives as Christians. If you go forth from this school and comport yourselves as real men, in every sense of that word, then the faculty of Mount Carmel will have been successful. If you go forth and become true Christians, then will Mount Carmel have been successful. This is the goal of the faculty and of the school. With you go all the best wishes of myself and of the faculty. You are now men and must prove yourselves as true Crusaders. Rev. Eugene J. McCallen, O. Carm. Principal 8 Fr. Kevin Morrissey. O. Corm. In two years of the Crusader life, the sophomcfte class has manifested itself as one in which unity is foremost. Their actions have conveyed to the other classes the true Carmel spirit of togetherness. With two more years ahead of them, this feeling should grow and prosper, fully preparing them for the life ahead. FRONT ROW: Curtis, McCue, Contreras, Pichon, Bell, Murphy. Mem- bership on the Student Advisory Council became a prize achievement, worthy of the respect of the entire student body. Members gave in- valuable assistance to the faculty, and provided a vital link between the administration and the students. A student chosen for a position on the Council must have dem- onstrated outstanding achievement in both scholastics and citizen- ship. He is picked at the discretion of the principal each semester and his membership can be revoked at any time. A member is ac- corded a semi-faculty status and given certain special privileges. The principal end, then, of this Third Order is to imbue those who belong to it with the Carmelite spirit and to direct and lead them to greater perfection in a manner suited to their state of life in the world. The members of the Third Order also strive, for the greater glory of God, to harbor a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to promote the good of the Church and the salvation of souls by prayers and good works. In the league opener the team almost scored one hundred points, a tremendous feat for a high school team. The Crusaders knocked St. Anthony's out of first place in the Catholic League in one of the final games of the season. Earlier in the season Mt. Carmel finished second in the Alemany tournament, barely losing out to South Pasadena. There were also some disappointing games when the team was cold and could not function as a unit. Mt. Carmel had one principal disad- vantage this season; that was its lack of overall height. In almost every game at least three of the Crusader starters were shorter than their counterparts. They made up for this disadvantage with exceptional speed and quickness, coupled with excellent ball handling. Mr. Edwards and the entire squad are to be credited with a fine effort all sea- son long. The team was excellently coached, and with a few lucky breaks the Crusaders would have been challeng- ing Pius and St. Anthony's for the league championship. Although noted for its team play, Mt. Carmel had many fine individual stars, and placed two players on the All- Catholic first team. 129 STATS G FGA FGM % FT A FTM % REB. PTS. P.P.G. With him came three Carmelite Friars from Castille who had agreed with Vizcaino to share the hardships of a long voyage in order to bring new souls into the fold. They were Fray Andres de la Asuncion, Fray Antonio de la Ascencion and Fray Tomas de Aquino. After a long and tedious journey, the expedition entered the present bay of San Diego on November 12, 1602. In thanksgiving for their safe arrival, Vizcaino dedicated the bay to San Diego de Alcala, a Spanish saint, whose feastday it was. The first Masses ever to be celebrated then on the shores of California were offered by Carmelite missionaries. The next arrival of the Carmelites in California was in 1933 when Bishop John J. Cantwell asked Father Elias Magennis, the Prior General of the Carmelites, whether the New York Province of St. Elias would consider coming to Los Angeles to take up high school work. The superiors of the Province were favorable to the acceptance and in June 1933 the Provincial Chapter approved a Los Angeles foundation. Without delay plans for the new building were prepared and approved and Father Patrick Russell assumed responsibility for the building and direction of the school. Left alone in Los Angeles, Mount Carmel's new principal, unwilling to wait for the completion of the building asked Father Noel Dillon, Pastor of St. Raphael's, about the possibility of using the parish hall as a classroom for the first year boys. The suggestion was received with enthu- siasm and so it came to pass that, in St. Raphael's Parish Hall, Mount Carmel High School was born in September of 1934. The school opened in September of 1934 with an enrollment of 65 freshmen. All the classes were held at the parish hall until the following November when the construction was completed and the transfer of the students to the new school took place. On the feast of the Epiphany, 1935, Mt. Carmel High School was solemnly blessed and dedicated by Archbishop Cantwell. In 1938, out of an enrollment of 258 students, 87 seniors graduated for the first time at Carmel. By 1939 the student body had passed the 300 mark. It was imperative that better facil- ities be given to the students. And so, the construction of a gymnasium, swimming pool and cafeteria was begun and opened the following year. In 1957 the Chicago Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary assumed the responsibility of the administration of Mount Carmel. In 1959 Crespi Carmelite High School opened in Encino under the principalship of Fr. Augustine Carter, a graduate of Mount Carmel. But the Carmelites did not restrict their activities to the educational fields. After Mount Carmel High School was inaugurated, Archbishop Cantwell offered the neighboring parish of St. Raphael to the Order and so on the feast of St. Raphael, October 24, 1935, the Carmelite Fathers also assumed care of the parish. In 1963 Cardinal McIntyre asked the Carmelites to assume the responsibility of the parish of St. Jane Frances de Chantal in North Hollywood. The Provincial, Fr. Brendan Gilmore, approved of the foundation and Fr. Norbert Piper was appointed pastor.
