Carmel ite of Today Theme Hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, a group of men gathered on Mount Carmel in Palestine. Their leader-Elias the Thesbite. Their purpose-to pay homage to the woman who was to be the mother of the Messiah. Thus the Carmelite order came into being. During the Crusades of the middle ages, the successors of Elias were found continuing their practice on Mount Carmel. The order came to Europe with the returning troops and the Carmelite order arrived in the Western world. ' Since then it has extended to all corners of the earth, teaching and spreading the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and her brown scapular. , - This year being the twenty-fifth-anniversary of Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, we have chosen for our theme the order of men that has made the glory and honor of the past two and one half decades possible. ln particular, we have gone back to the very beginnings high atop Mount Carmel. Some of the incidents depicted concerning 'Elias and his followers are recorded fact, others are speculation. However, be it fact or fiction, as we page through this book we are constantly reminded to the words of Elias- With zeal l am zealous for the Lord God of Hosts. After twenty-five years of students and happenings, it is all but impossible to single out one person from all those who have helped lVlt. Carmel High in so many ways. However, the task was accomplished. We have chosen a person who is honored and respected by people the world over. She is known under many titles, but we have chosen one made known through the order of which our school is a part. She singled out one member of this order, St. Simon Stock, to receive her greatest gift to us, the brown scapular. She has been the subject of many works of art down through the ages, including a very famous one depicted on the facing page. She has truly fa- vored our school, helping and guiding it through twenty-five years of progress. We, the staff of the 1960 El Conquistador, reverently dedicate this annual to Our Lady of lVlount Carmel. . . . the Carmelite Order is in a special way dedi- cated tothe Blessed Virgin lVlary, Mother and Ornament of Carmel. From her, Carmelites will learn to keep all the words of the Lord in their hearts and ponder over them, and to love solitude and silence. To this most sweet Nlother they will flee in all difficulties of the in- terior and exterior life. By the hands of the most pure Virgin they will offer to God their prayers, labors and crosses to be purified from defects and impurities. ln the arms of the Mediatrix of all graces they will tran- quilly breathe forth their soul, finally to- behold Him unveiled in the light of glory whom they contemplated in this life veiled in faith. They viewed the Seniors and thought of their achievements, awaiting the day when they too would lead the school. When that day finally ar- rived, the 1960 class began a year of wondrous achieve- ments that will be hard to surpass in the future. Senior outings, the first Homecoming, the outstanding athletic teams, and the many fine scholars who have won acclaim highlighted a most successful year. This class truly is befitting Carmel's 25th anniversary, a great year in Carmel history. E x. 2 A graduate of Los Angeles State College, lVlr. Walter Ambord did it again! ln two previous seasons with much more superior material, he turned in teams of Championship caliber. In 1960, he also fashioned a team that was known to it's opponents as the 'fScourge of the Catholic League . From the students of Carmel, thank you, Walter Ambord. ln order to produce top flight linemen, Carmel needed a man who could be stern and dominant but have a knack of earning everyone's heart- felt confidence and respect. They found such a man in lVlr. Jerry Hennessy. He took a green line and inexperienced pass-catching ends, and molded a frontal attack that swept opposition into a heap of fatigue and confusion. Thanks to you also, Jerry Hennessy. Varsity Jerry Hennessy Line Coach To keep a team together, literally, a man once said, you need two things, spirit and tape. Carmel had both these necessary articles in one man, Mr. Gerald Smith. Not only did Mr. Carmel tape the team together with adhesive, he also fastened them with an unbreakable bind of spirit. As a newcomer to Mount Carmel, Mr. Thomas Richards, better known as t'The Mouse , didn't waste any time falling into the Carmel way of doing things. His skill as a teacher and his virtue of patience helped the Carmelite backfield to the extent of their fifth league championship. Con- gratulations to these two fine gentlemen. The Crusaders brought the bacon home by running away with a 42-14 victory over the desolate Indians. To the pre-season critics surprise, the Brown and White Men offered a strongly bal- anced team that cool Fall evening. Long break-away runs and sharp T.D. passes copped the action and turned the cynics' heads. Picked for fourth place in the league, the one-win team faced the 5th ranked C.l.F. candidate, the Morningside Monarchs, the following week. They were not convinced of Carmel's strength. They had to be shown! It was a sloppily played game and the Phantoms took advantage by keeping the pressure on at all times. Scoring was sparseg one T.D. came on a short 10 yard pass from Ar- none to Smith. The next came on a herculean jaunt good for 56 yards by Jerry Bonetto. A793 Carmel's passing attack had re- mained relatively dormant until this game. Mr. Hennessy thought it about time to wake it up. Through- out the practice week, the Arnone to Lozano combination clicked well. Practice makes perfect and it was demonstrated that night. Late in the first quarter Arnone threw a long arched aerial through the out- stretched hands of the Cub's de- fensemen. Lozano snagged it for the touchdown. This proved the difference in the meeting. The re- maining thirty-six minutes were taken up by exchanging punts. But Carmel had a score! Things looked very bright for the Crusaders this season, as they entered into the 1960 bas- ketball schedule. Placing first in their home tourney and second to their league foe, Saint Anthony's, in the Compton tourney, the Nlen of Carmel were about to cruise into league action. The first round passed by with many closely-contested games. With only eight sec- onds left to play and one point back, in the St. An- thony's game, Larry Nlaya raced down court, and dunked the winning ducat, retaining CarmeI's perfect record for the first round. In the second round the mighty Crusaders stumbled, losing the games, one to their old nemesis, the Saints, and the other to Pius at the Warrior's home court. Carmel finished sec- ond in the league standings and gained a position in the C.l.F. playoffs. punk 1960 Tom Ega n Forward I ,iq George Heatter Guard Regis Matzie Guard 1 9 4 1 Larry Maya Guard Roscoe Procter Forward EEL Dennis Schreiner Forward One of the outstanding highlights was seen in the Carmel Serra clash. During the past football season the Brown and White Cham- pions were tied 6 to 6 by the Cavalier eleven, thus ruining Carmel's perfect league record and inflicting sharp pains of pessimism upon many fervent fans, following the 1960 Crusaders. The new basket- ball season provided a perfect opportunity for the Carmel five to regain some of their fans' respect. Keeping the Van Ness Horse- men under their sternest pressure, the Carmelites trounced them both physically and mentally. With this great victory, Carmel once again ranked number one in Catholic League circles. George racks up two more in Serra skirmish. For the first time in our school's 25 year history, the Mount Carmel finmen swam through an undefeated season, breaking school records at every meet. Such stars as Richard Santoni, George Cuttrell, and Tony Auth, proved invaluable. Santoni, himself, broke three school records, while setting a stiff pace to be followed by his swimming team-mates. Cuttrell and Auth, both mem- bers of the Student Council, took time out from their Student Body chores, to flash through the agua and mount the points from Carmel's victories.
