Layout: Carmen Ladeau A u hf J nsmiBO Layout: Carmen Ladeau DEDICATION We, the class of 1986 dedicate this year- book to you, Mr. Rick Desorda. In be- stowing this honor on you, we hope to show our gratitude for all the work done for us, and also all the smiles you've brought to us. In doing this we hope to make you a happy camper. Thanks for everything, and take Care!! 3 Congra t ula tion s Congratulations to the class of 1980. Time is the one constant in life. Just think! Around your thir- tieth birthday you will move into the 21st century. You and two or three billion travelers will progress through time on spaceship earth. You will carry some old problems with you and undoubtedly you will create some of your own. An intriguing prospect is the change you will wit- ness in your lifetime. What new inventions will you see? What new frontiers will open in space, medicine, communications and travel? Look at the change man has created in the last 86 years - televi- sion, radio, airplanes, spacecrafts, microwave ov- ens. miracle drugs, organ transplants - just to mention a few. The twenty-first century promises similar and perhaps greater happenings. You are fortunate to be able to be a part of scientific, medi- cal and social changes the scope of which we have no idea in 1986. You will see, I hope, the end of war, pollution, racial conflict, hunger and disease. I also hope you will actively engage in solving these problems. Your teachers have worked hard to provide you with coping skills and the basic skills of mathe- matics, science, writing, reading, physical fitness, computers, and driver education. I urge you to study, think, and become involved in your destiny. Face the future by being an inner-directed person. Don't follow the crowd, sheeplike, but rather use flexibility, self-reliance, and clear thinking skills as you push ahead in time. Good luck to each of you as you journey into mysterious time. Keith L. Hall Superintendent of Schools To The Class Of 1986 Congratulations to each of you graduating seniors. You are very shortly going to experience one of the major change points in your life and I assure you that you, as many before you, will experience var- ied and confusing emotions on Graduation Day. I encourage you to remember that while gradua- tion commemorates the completion of one phase of your life it also heralds the beginning of the next phase which, if you are prepared, leads to full participation in our society as a young adult. Nev- er forget that the much longed for freedom of adulthood brings with it a good mix of that free- dom, additional rights and the many responsibil- ities of our complex society. The first two can only be fully enjoyed if you wholeheartedly dedicate yourselves to meeting your responsibilities to par- ents, friends, and society in general. Remember for our society to function at its best it requires the participation of the maximum number of citizens. I hope that in this sense you will truly join and participate in today's adult world. I wish you each happiness and contentment and welcome you gradutates to your new status. Harry A. With our only losses going to CVU and Rice during the regular season the herd once again emerged as one of the favorites for the Division II state title. As the season wore on, the ladies begun to believe in themselves and dream of performing at a level that would bring them a 3rd state crown. Their hard work and performance showed as the following school records were set: 100 meter 13.0 Debbie Caruso; 200 meter 26.7 Debbie Caruso; 300 meter hurdles 51.1 Penny Weightman; 4x100 relay 52.7 Caruos, B. Crane, Camm, Weightman; 4x400 relay 4:22 Perez, Crane, Crane, O'Neil; discus 129-7 2 Carol Weston; Javelin 130-5 Carol Weston. State Divi- sion II meet records were also set by Debbie in the 100 m, and Carol in the javelin. Carol's discus throw is a total state record. Debbie Caruso, Cathi O'Neil, and Carol Weston represented Vermont, at the N.E. Championships. Carol became the N.E. discus champion. While we finished 3rd at the state meet, the season was a success, since the Herd grew and matured into a group that had the desire needed to be a champion. Coach S. The herders ran well at the invitationals, winning both the Essex and B.H.S. Div. 2 invitationals, beating rivals Harwood and U 32. Our best races was finishing 3rd in Div. 2 at the Kingdom Cup. At the State meet the Eagle ladies placed 8th, three places better than last year. The team averaged 12 places per persons better than 1984. Individually, Cathi O'Neil established herself as one of the best runners in the state. She was the 4th best Vermonter, and 19th overall, at the New England meet. With all runners returning, the 1986 fall herd should develop even further. The seeds were sown this year. The fall herd did a fine job and should be proud. Bev is. Say HEY!'' The team competed in fourteen contests. The team won fourteen contests. The purpose of the J.V. program is not however, to win ballgames, it is to develop players' team-oriented and individual skills. Learning to take on challenges, make good choices, accept responsibility and evaluate one's own performance are the goals of J.V. soc- cer. On the other hand, winning all the games is fun. During the course of our fourteen game season we scored 61 goals while giving up 15 to our opponents. Kevin legs Knox and Brady Redbird Burgess were the high scorers. Matt Pride Buonincontro directed our defense and earned the teams Most Valuable Player Award. Knox was the teams Most Improved Player. The prestigious Kamikaze Award was given to Dave glasses Clayton and Buonincontro. Chris keeper Ge- migniani gave up less than one goal a game. More important than the individual statistics and awards is the team. The players you see on this page are good. They were successful because they played as a team. I'm proud to have been associ- ated with them during the 1985 season. Standing: Coach J. Rivers, C. Gebo, M Blaise, C. Gemigniani, A. Serafin, M. Buonincontro, C. Salvador, K. Thompson, J. Sodano, S. Wallace A young group of hardworking Freshmen combined with experience and skill of the Sophomores resulted in a successful 10-2-1 season. Captains Jody Rathbun and Andrea Cota displayed fine leadership and skill which gave their teammates the desire to win. Sophomores Nicole McKean and Cota combined with Freshmen Sherri Bedard and Cathy Clark to give the offensive punch. Defensively, Sophomores Rathbun, Jean Heiser, Carol Thompson, Kristen Benway, Reta Hutchins, and Freshmen Kris Cho- quette and Jacki Hoag limited the scoring opportunities of their opposition. Goaltend- ers Heidi Gagnon and Holly Saunders were in a class by themselves. Between these two they combined for over 50 saves, 8 shutouts and allowed only 4 goals. The highlight of the season was winning the Mt. Abe J.V. tournament. Every player showed desire, determination and hustle that was needed for each tournament game. I was proud to be the coach of this team. These girls offer the Mt. Abe Field Hockey program a bright future. j v Back Row: J. Fucci, S. Slayton, J. Rathbun, E. Henderson, M. Choquette, N. Hulst, K. A summary of the 1985 season must begin with a loss in 1984, because it was the overtime, quarterfinal loss to Rice last year which gave the '85 team a hint of what might be achieved. In 1984, the Eagles dominated the Quarterfinal and lost. In 1985, the teams were evenly matched, and the Eagles won. Capably led by co-captains Sarah Slayton and Helen Norris and four other seniors, the very young '85 team entered the State Tournament with a 7-4-3 record. Although immature in August, by midseason, each player had shown increased commitment and had decided to grow up. Finally, under the worst imaginable playing conditions which demanded stabilitv. intensity, adaptability, and outstanding performances from every individual, the Eagles came from a 0-2 deficit at halftime, to win 3-2 in the fourth overtime. All 21 of the players earned that victory and the elation which accompanied it. Unfortunately, such supreme effort was not without its price, and the Eagles lost to Woodstock in the Semis after a disappointing performance. Even that loss should prove to be beneficial for the juniors as the team of '86 will have had the experience of making it to the semifinals. The expertise of a few- Helen Norris, JoAnn Rathbun, and Terry Masterson were recognized by League coaches as the trio who were named to the League All-Star Team. The Final 8-5-3 record belonged to a unit of 21 girls who had grown up in a very short time, who had learned how to dig a little deeper , and who had developed in to very fine, dynamic young team. But life bestowed its unknown fates. Soon the Eagles time had come. They needed that one elusive game to qualify for the state tournament. The victory came and the Eagles spirit soared high going into the playoffs. Mt. Abe played their hearts out against a team which had beaten them 4-0 during the regular season. With seconds left in the fourth overtime Mill River scored the game winner. Which even- tually had Mill River to the State Championship. Lost was the game- over was the season- but more importantly, gained was valuable experience. Coach Hutchinson The Junior High Boys basketball team was composed of many inexperienced ball players. Throughout the season the team learned how to play together and develop their individual skills. The highlight of the season was coming in third in the Vergennes tournament. The returning ballplayers give next years team some quickness and game sense that was needed this year. What a season for the junior high girl's bas- ketball team. They are 6 and 6 on the season with their last game in the Vergennes Tourna- ment for third place against Orwell. Most games have been cliff hangers; won or loss by 2-3 points.; Perhaps the most exciting win was a 2-13 come from behind at half-time to beat Camel's Hump 21-17. The team is made up of four squads of players who each play 3 min. in the first half. The the all-star team finishes up the game going for the win. 127 B A 5 % T3 i QJ c 5C J •■o I - O i J3 5 Mark Choinere, Erik Yager Steve Caruso, Craig Scribner, Matt Buonincontro, Chris Salvadore, Coach Joe Rivers, Doug Van Tol, Lance Lafave, Andy Smith, Jason Sharpe, Chris Thompson, Greg Cousino, Chris Cassidy. BALL Developing the skills which will make an individual a bet- ter basketball player is the im- mediate goal of this program. At the same time, much more occurs during the course of the season. An individual's character is tested repeatedly as the season progresses. Mental and physi- cal stamina are stretched to the limits in game situations. Emotional and physical matu- rity levels are tested over and over. The constant challenge to improve is there every day. 128 The J.V. girls basketball team had a lot of fun. They started their season with a record of 7- 1. They worked real hard, late into the night, as they came to each game with lots of fight. Their offence was good, their defence was mean. Opponents left the court not sure what they had seen. Andrea, Lauren, Jennie, Angie and Nikki worked hard at the start of the game, while Heidi, Chrissy, Lori, Keely, Sherri Andrea and JoAnne came in and did the same. Losing two overtime ball games early in the year proved to be the difference to not making play-offs. Some fine leadership and determination by Mike Brown and Tom McKean, aided a great deal toward the progress of the basket- ball program. We were, for the most part, a young ball club, and with some hard work and dedica- tion over the summer we should be looking forward to a successful 1986-87 season. -Bill Leggett VARSITY JV i H. Hunnestead Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders worked hard throughout the season to become two of the best squads Mt. Abe has seen in the past few years! The Junior Varsity squad consisted of all new girls this year, however by mid-season they had matured into a well organized and highly motivated squad of which to be proud of! The Varsity squad, through a lot of hard work and practice placed a strong 2nd at the Regional Cheer- ieading Competition, which entitled them to com- pete at the State level against the five best Division II Cheerleading squads in the state. Quite an accom- plishment for a young but dedicated squad! The 1986 cheerleading squads were both really something to cheer about! We succeeded and in a big way; it was not only fourfold better but also over 20 pages bigger. We expanded on a lot of the ideas used in last years book, and came up with some real good original ideas, the use of toollines and screens in this book was truly impressive. The tipins, at the front of the book, and roughly in the middle, are marvel- ous. The color section, and the spot color sec- tions are truly awesome. I would have liked to have had another color section this year, but as deadlines have it; maybe next year. This book is truly AWESOME. Sibling youths you have no clue as to the work put into this major production. The hours spent, the pressure around deadlines. Thanks to my staff and my invaluable advisor (Karl 'awesome' Thelen) this production was not also accomplished but very enjoyable. My thanks also to David Wi- sell- my advertising editor who did a spectacu- lar job with the ad section, and also Erica Scibner-who did an excellent job with the se- nior portraits. I wish our dedicatee-The Happy Camper Himself-the best, and would just like to say thanks for everything. I wish my re- placements the best of luck in coping, and may they continue in the great fashion in which the past two years have gone. Well I guess I just would like to say goodbye to ev- erybody and thanks, its been great. Tom Mckean JOSTENS
