SUMMER The summer of 1981 consisted of a variety of activities. For many, summer meant working full-time, ; with the rainy weekends off. Others spent their time working part-time and trying to acquire and keep a tan (for the first six days the sun decided to pay a visit.) Eating, picnics, going to Lake Independence, bike riding, jogging, boating, bridge jumping, going to Big Island, water skiing, swimming, going down the Apple River, diving, playing tennis, baseball, football, soccer, daily visits to Dairy Queen, A W, Burger Chef, and Frosty Boy, Valleyfair, relaxing, avoiding mosquitoes and horseflys, golfing, pot lucks, trying to travel in cars through the construction, cheerleading and pop-singer practices, watching the hockey arena “grow”, and enjoying our freedom were some of the day time activities. At night things got a little wild with parties, those 12 o’clock firecracker and T.P. raids (by you know who), surprise parties, movies such as Endless Love, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Arthur, The Fox and the Hound, and For Your Eyes Only, which were some of the more popular ones. Attending Kick’s games and concerts, thinking of something fun to do, mimi-putting, boating, sleep-overs, poker parties, going to Tara with sparklers, “let-tin’ er ride’’ (pertaining to life), having fun, and coming home 2 hours late and missing your curfew (huh ohhh!!). Other students had a bit of bad luck at the beginning of summer with broken legs, cut feet, and car accidents. They came up with a happy endings as summer neared its end. Other students traveled out of the state, visited colleges, vacationed up north, attended boot-camp, and traveled out of the United States. Even though we had a rainy vacation. the rest and relaxation did us good. We were anxious to get back to school to see our friends we lost touch with over the summer (not to attend classes). 2
