For many, summer meant working full-time, ; with the rainy weekends off. Others spent their time working part-time and trying to acquire and keep a tan (for the first six days the sun decided to pay a visit.) Eating, picnics, going to Lake Independence, bike riding, jogging, boating, bridge jumping, going to Big Island, water skiing, swimming, going down the Apple River, diving, playing tennis, baseball, football, soccer, daily visits to Dairy Queen, A W, Burger Chef, and Frosty Boy, Valleyfair, relaxing, avoiding mosquitoes and horseflys, golfing, pot lucks, trying to travel in cars through the construction, cheerleading and pop-singer practices, watching the hockey arena “grow”, and enjoying our freedom were some of the day time activities. At night things got a little wild with parties, those 12 o’clock firecracker and T.P. raids (by you know who), surprise parties, movies such as Endless Love, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Arthur, The Fox and the Hound, and For Your Eyes Only, which were some of the more popular ones. Attending Kick’s games and concerts, thinking of something fun to do, mimi-putting, boating, sleep-overs, poker parties, going to Tara with sparklers, “let-tin’ er ride’’ (pertaining to life), having fun, and coming home 2 hours late and missing your curfew (huh ohhh!!). Other students had a bit of bad luck at the beginning of summer with broken legs, cut feet, and car accidents. They came up with a happy endings as summer neared its end. Other students traveled out of the state, visited colleges, vacationed up north, attended boot-camp, and traveled out of the United States. Even though we had a rainy vacation. the rest and relaxation did us good. We were anxious to get back to school to see our friends we lost touch with over the summer (not to attend classes). 2 HOMECOMING Princess Kim Falness Escort Scott Sorbo ROYALTY 81 Flower Girl Tina Pugh Crown Bearer Matthew Bailey Princess Sue Boylan Princess Ann Wilsey Escort Scott Stettin Escort Todd Ketcher Princess Ann O'Donnell Escort Brent Muth Princess Maureen McGinnis Escort Rob Morrow 9 — MON DA Y Dress up, Coronation TUESDA Y Twins day WEDNESDA Y Punk-slave day, Pizza party THURSDA Y Sweats and hat, Hall decoration FRIDA Y Red and White, Cheerleading and Drill team initiation, Football game SATURDAY Dance 10 12 Two of the main highlights of Homecoming were Coronation and the Pepfest. Kati Pletsch and Chris Title announced the candidates. Tina Pugh was the flower girl and Matthew Bailey was the crown bearer. Tammie Erickson was crowned 1981 Homecoming Queen and the band Vision played for the occasion. Pepfest was a battle of the grades. Every grade volunteered four male cheerleaders to display their co-ordination and show their spirit. A class officer from each grade also volunteered to represent their class in a Pie eating contest. The overall winners were of course the seniors, second place went to the sophomores and juniors were third. Freshmen put up a good struggle but pulled in last. 13 Dairy Queen What do Mound students do in their spare time?? EAT!! For it isn’t your father or mother or wife, Whose judgment you have to pass, The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life, Is the one staring back from the glass. Some people may think you a straight-shooting chum And call you a wonderful guy, But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum If you can’t look him straight in the eye. He’s the fellow to please, never mind all the rest, For he’s with you clear up to the end. And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test If the man in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole world, down the pathway of life, And get pats on your back as you pass. But your final reward will be heartaches and tears If you’ve cheated the man in the glass. 61 FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS We the officers of the Sophomore 1982 class chose to run because of the challenge, the importance of making the correct decisions, and anticipating our classmates views and ideas. Also, to be able to work hand in hand with the teachers and administrative staff to enable us to better understand their point of view and they ours. We class officers work together in our appointed duties as: President: Lezlie Vance, Vice President: Jon Walman, Secretary: Theresa Finn, and Treasurer: Brad Reese. Our campaigning process consisted of posters in the halls, word of mouth, and over the announcements. Jon Walman put a piece together taken from the $6 Million Dollar Man as follows: “ The Sophomore class, a class barely alive. Sophomores we can rebuild this class, we have the technology. We can make it better than it was. Better, stronger, and faster. We don’t need $6 million dollars we just need your vote.” We worked at the homecoming dance and in December we went to lunch with Mr. Thosten-son. There we discussed the school budget and organization of class subjects and extra curricular activities. We are now in the process of raising money for the 1983 Junior-Senior prom. —Lezlie Vance JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS REPRESENTING THE CLASS OF ’83? Well let me tell you I’m not particularly thrilled about the idea after just one year. One of the things that I will remember from MW (apart from the early mornings and chilly winters) is how friendly and open everybody is. You don’t realize how welcome you folks made me feel as I was fighting my way down the corridor and you would say hi, or just flash me a quick pepsodent smile. I went on a program called the work project. I didn't stay with one family for the whole 8 weeks but witti,5 different families for anywhere from 3 to 7 days. When I wasn’t in a family home I was at a Conservation camp doing manual labor. Was it hard, building brushwood fences on a beach in Wales, clearing a pond on an estate opened to tourists in the West Midlands, building enclosures on'a mountain beside the famous Benine Way in the Peak District National Park!! It was very interesting (and embarrassing) to find out things, like the difference between pants and trousers. But the most impressive evept was the Royal Wedding and the wide I rWfJe of reactions to it. Although it was great to go and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world its nice to be back in the U.S. So if you ever get a chance to travel, take it, it’s worth what ever it costs. Love .Pam Zawada Bonjour, . ' v . ■; - v In France I had an image about U S.A. and American people because of all the stereotypes about your country. My brother, Ian who was here 6 years ago told me alot about Mound, the high school. Even with all the “information ’ I have been very sur -prised by the differences between my country and here. The habits, the weather, the food, the mentality in general. It’s interesting to know another way of life and now I have my own opinion and I know that America is not only the cowboy playing banjo, in an American western on French TV. Helene Feviljet J I I - 70 R . . This summer I was in Brazil for 2 months by AFS. I lived with a family in which I had parents and five brothers. My family was the most important part of my experience. They accepted me as their daughter or their sister, I was truly a family member. I was fortunate to travel to the south of Brazil and to the ever so famous cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The beaches in Rio were larger and prettier than I had ever imagined and the swim suits were smaller than I thought possible. I also traveled to the countries of Argentina and Paraguay. The most difficult challenge for me was learning the language, Portuguese, but it was also the most rewarding. Many times I would say things that did not make sense and people would laugh, but laughter is the best medicine. I went to school for three weeks while I was in Brazil. Even though I could not begin to pass the tests or understand the classes, I tried to learn and the teachers were really helpful. My classmates were eager to help me to learn Portuguese and they were proud to show me their culture. Brazil was a valuable experience for me. It was an experience that will always be a large part of my life. I am grateful to AFS for giving me the opportunity to learn about a foreign culture, a foreign language, and foreign people and their life style. Beijos Kati Pletsch Hello Mound High School! ' I, Gladys Blanco A.F.S. student from Paraguay, don’t know how to explain how important this year in Minnesota is for me. I like Mound High School very much because it has very good teachers, who are ready to help all the A.F.S. students. I also like the nice students. One thing I noticed is the school colors, Red and White. They are the favorite colors of my city Coronet Oviedo, in Paraguay. I will never forget this wonderful experience that I am spending here in Minnesota. I will always remember the beautiful lakes that characterize Minnesota, and the beautiful snow, which I don’t have in my country. Each day I learn new things, thanks to my host family and friends. Finally I want to say that Minnesota, like Paraguay, always will have a warm place in my heart. The services provided are primarily scheduling and seeing that faulty operation of equipment gets the needed repair. All of this equipment seems to need lamps of one kind or another and this is an important and expensive part of the operation------supplying the proper lamp for the projector. We have over thirty five different lamps in stock. The AV responsibility also includes ordering films and seeing that teachers get the films they need on time. 76 Ted Linn, Jim Sundberg, Mr. Scheu OE - DE 1st Row; T. Freeberg, M. McNulty, D. The Story involves Henri Trochard and his nephew Paul coming to inspect the books of his cousin by marriage, Felix Ducotel in French Guinana. In order to prevent Felix and his wife from losing their house and shop to Henri, and their daughter Marie Louise to Paul, the convicts working for Felix decide to kill Henri. With the aid of their pet snake Adolphe, they accidently manage to kill Paul as well. Everyone involved in the school play would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Gulbranson for their support and encouragement and a special thanks to Rob Morrow and his chicken for providing one of the high points of the night. But we must continue to keep in mind our overall purpose- teaching the youth of our community. This fall we begin our 11th year as Mound Westonka High School. Our curricular programs have continued to grow and develop. We are especially pleased with the enhanced offerings of courses for ninth graders in Industrial Arts, Business Education, Home economics and Music. We can all by very proud of this fact! This year we will enroll over 1068 students and employ over 110 staff members in our high school building. Our entire building will be fully utilized to accommodate the academic, athletic, expressive activities and community programs scheduled for the 1981-82 school year. Our accomplishments in the past have been noteworthy. Our past graduates and student body gave us and our community a great sense of pride. We are sure that through your goal development, good physical health, continued education, consistent drive, confident resourcefulness and perseverance we can continue the excellence that we have developed. You have made Mound Westonka High School a fine school. Have a good year! Sincerely, G. Punkster Jean WE “ARE” THE CLASS OF ’82! GRADUA TION DA Y Th-th-th-thats all folks! Today we’ll start a new life and we’ll say our last goodbyes. To all the friends we’ve grown to love. With whom we’ve laughed and cried. Remembering the fun and laughter The problems and the fears And watching all our memories grow Throughout all the years. The memories of the dances And the new friends that we’ve met. Vacations, teachers, talking, And exams we’d rather forget Yes, high school days are precious but brief Where all your dreams come true. It is not the end but the beginning Of a life we’ll start anew. The minute that we decided to become the 1982 yearbook editors, our lives changed. Changed with decisions, workshops, and early morning breakfast meet ings. We slowly gathered together bits and pieces of ideas and thoughts to some how come up with a theme. One day, while we were racking our brains on the way to a breakfast meeting on a crowded highway behind a burl Mack truck (in Kati’s MG, of course!), the idea struck us. “We are mov ing on into the future and our theme shouh symbolize that.” (We don’t know if it wasi the exhaust from the truck that did it, bu after that, our ideas flowed a lot easier). It wasn't easy; sometimes it took us three hours to think of a page title and other times it took us three minutes to do a whole page. We sacrificed many nights and many! •weekend nights, too, (a big sacrifice fro high school student) to meet a deadline or t ;just try to get out of a slump. Sometime we’d start at 7:30 p.m. and one of us would glance at the clock and it would read 3:30 ;«.m. “Beth, I guess you had better sleep over.” Boy, how we would dread hearin the alarm go off at 6:00 in the morning. An we were expected to jump up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to go to school and last through Government or Econ. without fall ing asleep??? But, it was a challenge which, we took and we had to conquer it. The yearbook was with us where ever we went. Our conversations rarely were with out the word “Yearbook.” Sometimes w thought our friends would hang us if w -ever uttered one more thing about our “pr cious book”. When we were in a frustrate mood or if a deadline was due: warnings were sent out by our friends to “steer clea of the bitches” (and we certainly were!)” -Thank you for all your understanding. There were a lot of fun times when wo! - would get into our frequent crazy mood and make up totally, utterly, ridiculous pages and just laugh and laugh and rip them up and do it again. All in all, wo learned a lot and we had fun in the process (We also kept our sanity) The yearbook, room B113, was our horn. Tf i $ 3 rrmfTTTre: mill 11 ■ IAVi -■ lVM (1 do many impossible things.
