Job Training “Concentration conquers all. The course in bookkeeping covered the forms used in a business of the sole proprietorship mercantile sales type. Students learned to use ledgers, checks, vouchers, statements, reconciliations and other tools of business. The structure and running of a business were also covered. The semester course in clerical practice was available to students who had taken typing and wanted to further their skills with the typewriter and other office machines. Under the distributive education program students learned and practiced job skills by actually holding jobs in Mound businesses. Juniors entered tin program with a study of such areas as salesmanship, marketing arid job interviewing. Office Practice . . . Typing . . . Business Machines . . . Happiness is students with shining eyes and smiling faces.” Typing is the basic course in the Business Department for it is the prerequisite to all stenography courses and is essential for many jobs. Students took the full year course which is mainly for those planning a business career or learning the elements of personal typing in the semester course. Students planning secretarial careers continued their business education with stenography I and II in which they learned Gregg shorthand. The first year course was devoted to the basic elements of stenography while the second year emphasized speed ami accuracy in shorthand transcription. Office practice, offered to students enrolled in stenography II. emphasized the use of various kinds of typewriters, adding machines and duplicators. Other topics covered were filing and job relations. Students in the semester course of consumer economies studied budgeting, savings, credit, taxes, insurance and other topics vital for running a household. Robert Fox . . . Typing . . . German III students learn to speak the language with a smile. Mintic Ferguson ... Cerman ... German Club advisor ... “Happiness is ambitious and cooperative (but fun-loving) students. Deufsch and Espanol Manuel Macias ... Spanish ... Span ish Club advisor ... “Happiness is Felicidad.” The basics of German grammar have been the primary objective of German I. In the first year the language lab was introduced to give prac-tiee in pronunciation and sentence patterns. Grammar and composition were emphasized in German II. along with the reading of short stories. In German III more literature was read, and the students were given frequent practice in composition. Kmphusis was placed on vocabulary, grammar and culture in Spanish I. Spanish II emphasized grammar and conversation with students improvising dialogues to be given in class. In Spanish III the students were to use as much of the language as possible as they improved their skills and gave skits. 18
