Their Senior Class play was the only big money raising project; for the purpose of a scholarship. May 31, the class of ’58 donned their caps and gowns, walked slowly down the aisle, received their diplomas, and walked out of their alma mater—some with tears in their eyes —never to be high school Seniors again. The world awaits them. CLASS MOTTO: “What! Me Worry?” CLASS FLOWER: Violet CLASS COLORS: Blue and Silver SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS. E. Vraalttad, Vue-Preudent; M. Pauly, Treasurer; S. The big smile and cheerful voice of Gerard Orsi, was welcome to all. Gerard soon turned into a typical Mound High Schooler. He kicked his locker, threw crepe paper when the Seniors decorated their homecoming float, yelled at the football games and wrestling matches, and picked up a good share of teen-age jargon. While learning the ways of Americans, Gerard also compiled an excellent scholastic record, and gained the respect of all of us. We’ll always remember you Gerard. “When the moon’a hits your eye like a big’a Pizza Pie that’s a More’a”— says Gerard Orsi, foreign exchange from Italy. 19 CLASS HOI ROD — Judy Dalton, Tom Donahue ALWAYS WILLING TO LEND A HAND — Carol Jensen, Dave March 20 H A L L BEST LOOKING — Judy Erickson, Dave Hoogrnakker CLASS WIT — Carol Lohinan, Tony Swan o F CLASS ROWDY — Fanchon Miller, James Duffy FRIENDLIEST SMILE—Donna Lou Bell, Art Speaker F A M E 21 PRETTIEST EYES — Joyce Schulenberg, Tim Chance BEST SPORTS -Nancy Maas, Dick Moore. We started early last summer drilling this into the mind of each member. Wc held car washes, dances, car washes and more car washes! During the school year we furnished the student body with a variety of entertainment in the form of dances, movies and our class play, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” and incidently we earned money. We successfully completed the school year by giving the Prom which was enjoyed by all who attended. FIRST ROW: K. Goetzman, K. Murphy, C. Lorentzen, J. Adair, A. Krotzcr, E. Rust, G. Adams. W. Lush. Smoke Signal Putting out The Smoke Signal once a month is no easy job, as this year’s coeditors found out. Eddie and Sue Ann had their fill of deadlines, headlines, late hours, and headaches, but the Signal always made its appearance as scheduled. To the Journalism class was put the task of raising money to meet the increased printing costs. Movies and popcorn were the basis of this fund-raising. If it hadn’t been for “Frogmen,” and “Ivanhoc,” there wouldn’t have been as many pictures in the Signal. The big aim of this year’s editors and Mr. Wachal, their advisor, was to receive the coveted “All-American” award given by the National Scholastic Press Association. 'Hie Smoke Signal’s final rating was known at the end of the year. Sue Ann Obon, Ed VraaUtad—Co-Editor ; Mr. Wachal, Advisor; Peggy Ziebell, Business Manager. Staff FIRST ROW: Mr. Miller, K. Each year the MOHIAN is dominated by the .Senior Class. They command more space in pictures and writing than any other group. Each .Senior Class will have its turn as it graduates. Our MOHIAN costs about $4.50 per book: however students pay only $3.00, the other $1.50 is made up by the sale of advertising space, and by concessions operated by the MOHIAN Staff. The work involved in putting out the MOHIAN was found to be overwhelming for one editor. 'Hie amount of work that mast go into putting out a yearbook is far greater than would seem on the surface. Each year because of increased student enrollment wc must increase the si c of the MOHIAN. Wc, the MOHIAN Staff sincerely hope that each student will receive his MOHIAN and enjoy its contents knowing that that enjoyment will increase as his high school days and graduation pass behind him. Boll, President; J. Tam-boumino, Secretary-Treasurer. The German Club advisor was Mr. Wachai. The club had dues—which were never paid; planned parties which were never given; and they also sang German songs in loud, but off-key voices. Although their plans did not always turn out they were very civic minded. One of the things they especially specialized in was helping Ladies in distress—mainly by carrying their cars off sidewalks. Even though this was one of the most disorganized clubs in the school, it was one of the most fun. Science Club Officers R. Paige, President; G. Orsi, Vice President; R. Maas, Secretary; D. Halverson, Treasurer. The Science Club was under the leadership of Ray Paige, and direction of Mr. Neilson, and sponsored the Mound Science Fair in the Latter part of March. The Science Fair has been an annual activity for the club. The winners from our local fair then went on to regional competition. Camera Club Officers J. Haeny, Vice President; D. Bell, President; B. Hodge, Treasurer; J. Schroeder, Secretary. The Camera Club was an organization that taught a student how to use his camera and learn the many different tasks of the developing process. They did such things as taking field trips, pictures for the school newspaper and snap shots for their own personal pleasure. ■ Thespian Officers E. Vraalstad, President; T. Thoe, Treasurer; P. Lindquist. Secretary; D. Pierson, Vice President. This was a very active year for the Mound Thespian Society, Try-outs were held in the fall and new members were selected. The regular initiation for members to the National Thespian Society was held at Shirley Hills School in the early spring. Some of the projects for the club included; the homecoming show at the afternoon coronation, a show with the band in their Pop Concert, a one-act play in the spring for the declamation contest, and fund raising projects to buy a small spotlight for the school. The club sponsored several projects and with some of the money they went to the Lyceum Theater and saw “Auntie Marne. 54 Library Assistants FIRS7' ROW: J. Hanson, A. Krotzer, Miss Johnson, J. Bruce Baldwin The Junior Class Play, “Arsenic and Old Lace” by Joseph Kcssclring, was presented November 8 and 9, 1957. This hilarious comedy revolves around two little old ladies, Abby and Martha Brewster. They arc quite “sane,” as it appears to everyone in the neighborhood, but one of their many charities happens to be poisoning lonely bachelors. Their brother Teddy, who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt, is in on their “secret.” He buries the “gentlemen” in Panama which happens to be the cellar. Everything goes well until their nephew, Mortimer, discovers a body in the window scat. He tries to protect his aunts but almost ends up in Panama himself when his brother Jonathan returns from abroad. Jonathan bears a strange and frightening resemblance to Boris KarlofT. He and his accomplice, Dr. Einstein, are notorious gangsters. The play contained much excitement and suspense, as well as comedy. 63 Arsenic and Old Lace t f Kicky Boll, Louis Oberdeck, Mary Gorgcn, Gay Ferrell, Tom Hagen. Eililec Christensen. Mound also had the distinction of scoring 1 of the 13 goals scored on St. Louis Park in 16 Lake Conference Games. The Mohawks placed 3 members on the allconference team. Ron Willow making second team and Mike Fitzgibbons and Steve Woods making honorable mention which is very good considering it was the first year and we did not win too many games. Mound. . . ...1 §t.
