Senior Class History As we look back through the porthole of our cabin cruiser, the Abe Lincoln, we recognize many familiar faces of the 46 passengers. At the first port we see coming aboard Ruth Bieber, Leo Belmore, Lynn Brackel, Duane Bertsch, Shirley Swindler, Kathy Fiedler, Jerry Auch, Virginia Roberts, Charlotte Nelson, Richard Hackney, Jerry Rokusek, Terry Crane, Don Mehrer, Lavern Heth, DeVonne Waddell, Quinton Heinzman, Ardis Gilbert, Frank Peterson, Loretta Heinrich, Violet Hartman, Deanna Auch, Isak Peterson, Dwight Ross, Genevieve Hanson, Billy Waddell, Wesley Heth, Alois Zoeller, Harold Frietz, Jimmy Fiedler, Stanley Wyman, Jeffery Auch, Sharon Sonnen- berg, Darlyne Kamrath, Elaine Klein, Lynette Wentlandt, Jimmy Lovelace, Gary Zentner, Douglas Schwartz, and Clarence Schaible. After traveling for six months we stopped at Port Sixth Grade, where we rechecked our passenger list and found that 24 of the first passengers had dropped out at some port along the way. These were: Irene Edinger, Harold Frietz, Genevieve Hanson, Elaine Klein, James Lovelace, Byron Miller, Rueben Pastian, Wesley Heth, Diane Schaff, Clarence Schaible, Sharon Sonnenberg, Billy Waddell, Stanley Wyman, Alois Zoeller, Larry Reinhardt, Deanna Auch, Leo Belmore, Terry Crane, Richard Hackney, Violet Hartman, Ardis Gilbert, Charlotte Nelson, Frank Peterson, and Izak Peterson. We picked up 12 new passengers bringing the total number to 34. Included were: Sig Trautwein, Larry Ruff, Raymond Pfeifle, Jim Lince, Margie Kilber, Kenny Auch, Raymond Wolf, Dennis Boknecht, Marvin Buchholz, David Friez, Jackie Griffin, Arnie Hoffman, and Mary Lou Dolecheck. Journeying one more month brought us to Port Seventh Grade. At this point new officers were chosen. They were: Admiral-Virginia Roberts, Commander- Jim Lince, First Mate -Lynette Wentlandt, and Second Mate-Douglas Schwartz. At Port Eighth Grade, losing two of our passengers, Kenneth Auch and Joan Miller, was compensated for by the addition of Virginia Freer, Edith Eberhardt, Arliss Hirning, and Billy Barchinger. Two of our passengers, Lynette Wentlandt and Sig Trautwein, were awarded as being outstanding citizens aboard ship. The hi-lite of our first eight months was eighth grade graduation. Honored were: Jeffery Auch, Duane Bertsch, Ruth Bieber, Dennis Boknecht, Lynn Brackel, Marvin Buchholz, Mary Lou Dolecheck, Edith Eberhardt, Joe Fettig, Jim Fiedler, Kathy Fiedler, Janet Frank, LaVonne Frank, Virginia Freer, David Friez, Jackie Griffin, Loretta Heinrich, Lavern Heth, Arliss Hirning, Arnie Hoffman, Darlyne Kamrath, Margie Kilber, Jim Lince, Don Mehrer, Raymond Pfeifle, Virginia Roberts, Jerry Rokusek, Dwight Ross, Larry Ruff, Ronald Schiff, Douglas Schwartz, Ron Srb, Shirley Swindler, Sig Trautwein, DeVonne Waddell, Lynette Wentlandt, Raymond Wolf, Gary Zentner, and Billy Barchinger. Docking at Port Freshman, we added the following 49 passengers to our list. Doris Baesler, Loretta Erhardt, Dale Eisenbarth, Dick Eisenbarth, Nancy Fiedler, Richard Frank, Jacob Friedt, Leonard Friez, Alice Guenther, Claude Hardmeyer, Kent Hardmeyer, Quinton Heinzman, Deanne Herner, Carol Jordan, LeRoy Klein, Judy Kuebler, Donald Lindemann, Pat Maercklein, Terry Manolovits, Evelyn Marthaller, Rita Martin, Cheryl Mayer, Charlotte Messer, Larry Messer, Reynold Miller, Joe Mitzel, Leo Mosbrucker, Carole Ottmar, Claudia Ottmar, Ted Peters, Michael Pollack, John Reinert, LeRoy Rokusek, Vivian Schlosser, DeLora Schutz, Josephine Steiner, Maurice Svihovec, Vivian Vukelio, Raymond Trieb, Alvin Wanner, Betty Weiler, June Weinberger, Larry Zentner, and Richard Matzke. Billy Barchinger, Larry Ruff, Arnie Hoffman, Joe Fettig, Dennis Boknecht, Mary Lou Dolecheck, and Edith Eberhardt left us here and went in different directions. A new crew was chosen: Admiral-Kent Hardmeyerg Commander -Jim Lince, First Mate-Sig Trautweing Second Mate -Shirley Swindler. h luviiss Shirley Swindler, escorted by Kent Hardmeyer, was led to the throne as an attendant for Carnival Queen in t e all o '5'7. After leaving Port Freshman behind, we reached Port Sophomore where Ervan Weller and Jackie Shawchuck joined us. Leaving us at this port were DeLora Shutz, Raymond Trieb, June Weinberger, Jacob Friedt, Lavern Heth, Leo Mosbrucker, LeRoy Rokusek, Raymond Wolf, Duane Bertsch, and Alvin Wanner. Again choosing new officers we find David Friez as Admiral, Ervan Weiler Commander, and Virginia Roberts as First Mate. Q In the fall of '58, Pat Maercklein, escorted by Ervan Weiler, was led to the throne as an attendant for Carnival ueen. Reaching Port Junior Alice Guenther, Larry Messer, Raymond Pfeifle, Michael Pollack, Janet Frank, Richard Frank, Leonard Frieze, Quinton Heinzman, Betty Weiler, Jackie Shawchuck, and Pat Maercklein left us. Ritchie Rokusek, Rosemary Schmidt, and Sandra Schmidt joined the crew. The play Dear Phoebe was presented by a few of the members of the crew. Ron Schiff was awarded the MHS Oscar, male lead. Led to the throne in the fall of '59 as candidate for Carnival Queen was Loretta Heinrich, escorted by Ron Schiff. The new officers were chosen. Ron Schiff as Admiral, Joe Mitzel as Commander, Loretta Heinrich as First Mate, Judy Kuebler as Second Mate, and Virginia Roberts as Third Mate. The main ball during the 12 month journey was held during the spring of '59, with Virginia Roberts crowned as the Belle of the Ball. The theme was Cherries Pink and Apple Blossoms White. An escapade of a selected few of the crew to attend Boys' and Girls' State, was taken by Virginia Roberts, Lynette Wentlandt, David Friez, Sig Trautwein, Joe Mitzel, Ron Schiff, and Kent Hardmeyer, Upon reaching Port Senior, the final officers of the journey were selected. Admiral-Kent Hardmeyerg Comman- der-Joe Mitzelg First Mate-Rita Martin, Second Mate -Ervan Weiler. DAR representative selected from the crew was Rita Martin. Led to the throne as Queen of MHS was Evelyn Marthaller, escorted by John Reinert. The last ball given by the passengers was held on February 4, 1961, the theme being Black Magic. The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners, the last and best play ever presented on board the Abe Lincoln, was a huge success. We made a final check of our passenger list. The following had not remained to complete the journey: Rosemary Schmidt, Sandra Schmidt, Doris Baesler, LaVonne Frank, Cheryl Mayer, Jerry Rokusek, Claudia Ottmar, and Vivian Schlosser, Some of our passengers made a transfer -Ritchie Rokusek, Deanne Herner, Ron Schiff, Joe Mitzel, Terry Manolovits, and Loretta Erhardt. We made one addition--Bob Skogley. 49 passengers completed the journey. Red and White were chosen as class colors, with red carnations for the flower. As we receive our diplomas, with the future before us, we shall think of our class motto, If we cannot find a road to success, we will make one. 43
