A Team FIRST ROW: Jack Griffin, David Friez, Bob Swindler, George Herner, Gary Berreth, and Steve Grant SECOND ROW Coach James McPherson, Kent Hardmeyer, Clifford Mehrer, David Lince, Bob Skogley, Leslie Haberstroh Tom Rogers, Statisticiang and Doug Friez, Student Manager. The Mott Cardinals opened the season with a squad consisting of four seniors five juniors, and two sophomores. They were under the direction of returning coach jim McPherson . The Cardinals had a Very successful season with a record of 11 wins and 0 losses in Conference play to become the year's Badlands Conference Champs. The season s total record was 19 Wins and 1 loss. For the first time in many years the mighty Cardinal team went on to become the District 16 Champions. From here the magnificent eleven ad vanced to the Region 4 Tournament to take the championship there too. For the first time in 17 years the Cards advanced to the State Tournament Here the tall and talented Cardinals proved themselves the best in the state by capturing for the first time in the history of the Mott High, the state championship of Class B basketball In the first and second day of tourney action Mott defeated Rock Lake and New Town in that order. Championship night saw Mott pegged against the same Hazelton team they defeated to take the Regional Crown. This was the second time in the history of Class B tournament action that teams from the same Region battled for the state championship title. So on March 18, 1961 Mott made history by becoming the 18th team to Join the ranks of Class B Champions.
