Itts been said that a strong democracy is a well- informed one. Our country,s citizens cannot help safeguard our liberties unless they are aware of the nature of our freedom and the dangers which threaten it. Through the study of World Cultures, taught by Sr. Mary Reginald, Miss Eleanor Bar- rett, Mrs. Veronica Boesken, Miss Eileen Bone- kamp, and Miss Pamela Juergens, students can evaluate the contribution of former civilizations. The history of our country is traced from the pre- revolution era to the present day in U. S. History classes. This subject is taught by Mr. Thomas Backer, Mrs. Boesken, and Miss Bonekamp. Race relations, Our foreign policy, and our judiciary are some aspects of contemporary affairs studied in the Problems of Democracy class under Mrs. Katherine Gusweiler and Mr. Backer. World Geography, 21 subject which made its debut at Mercy this year and is taught by Sister Mary Myra, explores the economical as well as physical aspects of countries. M. BCSSIELJ. Ernstes,J. Giltz, Eh Colony. and M. Buck sludy the customs Of India in Mrs, Boeskents World Cultures class. 27 Mrs. Gusweilcr looks skeptical about accepting Our Interests at Elder High School as the topic for future discussions in Problems of Democracy dass. Kathy Riga. Terry Yunger, and Connie Dassinger thought it was a pretty good idea.

Business World Demands Accuracy The juniors and seniors who are interested in secretarial careers are benefited by the business courses offered at Mercy. Proficiency in typingr is achieved with the help of Miss Eckel, Sister Mary Edith, Sister Loretto Marie, and Sister Mary Reginald. Shorthand is taught by Sister Edith and Miss Eckel. Sister Reginald and Mr. Robert Koenig, who also teaches bookkeeping, emphasize 2lecuracy in oche practice. Consumer Economics, 21 new subject offered this year, is taught by Mr. Koenig. Girls are taught the mathematics aspect 0f business by Mr, William O7Connor who teachas business and refresher math 29 hWeH. says Sister M. Reginald to D Brethauer.
