Literature Reflects Times ILYouyll enjoy Hawthorne, says Miss Kirstcin to Diane Brockman. Sister Mary 'Iulian isn't behind the Times, shehs behind the Enquirer. From Shakespeare to Milton, from Bede t0 Hopkinshthe writings of our native language are being studied in depth. Freshmen take up their study of grammar and are introduced to literature by Sister Mary Myra and Miss Diane Dressmanh Sophs re-enact Shakespearek Uulius Caesarh under the direction of Miss Carole Kirs- tein and Miss Joan Brunsman, who, along with Sister Mary Benet and Mrs. Veronica Boesken, also teach American Lith Seniors trace the prog- ress of English literature with Sister Mary julian, Miss Eleanor Barrett and Sr. Mary Benet, who also teaches English-aligned subjects World Liter- ature and Creative Writing. 20

Of primary importance in the process of spiritual formation is the work of the religion department. Freshman and sopho- mores study their faith under the competent in- struction of Fathers chz, Peaker, Keller, and Dettenwanger, Sister Mary Almeda, Sister Mary Aloyse, Sister Mary Bernard, Miss Et Barrett. and Miss K. Wuersig. Mother of Mercyis chap- lain, Father Stephen Calme, is indispensable to the juniors as teacher, and friend, and counselor. Seniors, under the guidance of Father Carl Lizza, study Mariology, justice, and marriage. Having the formal study of religion incorporated into the daily lives of the girls gives them an excellent Opportunity to fortify their commitment to Christ.
