Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like mujff'ted drums, are beating Funeral marches t0 the grave. In the world : broad held of battle, In the bivouac Of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust 710 Future, howejer pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Acheact in the living Present! Heart within, and God 01erheadf Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints 0n the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing ojer lifets sotemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. Father Peaker gives his religion classes additional information on the latest changes in the liturgy. Being witnesses to Christ and living as Apostles in this modern world are some of the roles Mercy girls are being prepared to assume when they take their places as adult Christians in this worldly society. Theylve found that in any vocation they choose theylll always be called upon to be other Christs. They will be light bearers shining with the charity of Christ for all other Christians. Fathers Henz, Dettenwanger, and Schetter impart a special sense to girls who will play a part in becoming leaders to :tknow the way, show the way, and go the way? Father Peaker and Sister Mary Annette R.S.M. teach that this is the age of the lay aposto- late, the time for action-maction as proof of love for God and man. Sister Mary Annette R,S,M. aided by J. Today, through the mass news media, and technological developments, con tinents are no longer oceans apart. The theme of our modern age is Unity. Unity among people of the world through a knowledge, understanding, and respect for each others culture, customs, and language. The study of languages is a means to such a goal. Through Latin, taught by Sr. Mary Celestine R.S.M., Sr. Mary de Sales R.S.M. and Sr. Mary Ursula R.SAM., girls come to appre- ciate the culture of the ancients, and hnd a very good foundation for modern languages. Our S. American neighbors are a constant source of in- terest for Miss Martinds and Miss Planths Span- ish classes. A recent focus of worldeide attention is France, and Sr. Mary Julianjs R.S.M. French students are sure to be up on all the current events through their overseas correspondence. Surely, studying foreign language is an essential qualih- cation for international citizenship. The plans and decorations for the annual Pan-American tea. are being discussed by Miss Martino and Spanish student Diane. Under her leadership the girls attain the basic essentials of expert homemaking and acquire the arts of the kitchen. With all of this knowledge as a foundation, Mercians are prepared for their roles as homemakers of tomorrow. The Home Economics class cleans up after an experimental meal. 30 Five minutes, four minutes, three minutes to G0! Mercyhs freshmen and sophomores are off again on the weekly hair-raising race. In their allotted three minutes the girls start from the gym on the lower Hoor to reach the third floor just in time for their next class. Their course is a grueling one with eight Hights of stairs, but the worthy con- testants are strong, speedy, vivacious Mercy girls in top physical condition. Students begin training early in the school year. Their coach, Mrs. Joyce McCosham, uses volleyball, pingapong, basketball, and baseball as her training secrets. The girls will be running on a new course, in a new location, with the newest training equipment. Mercyhs new gym is in the making! uGet under, then up and overlh exclaims D. Krause to R. Kroeger. It,s a life of skill, know-how, and alertness Anyone entering this field must have a training in its essentials and skill in its art. Its background may be credits in office practice or bookkeeping; Mr. Robert Koenig supplies this This training could also include a collection of 120 words per minute in shorthand or 60 words a minute typing; but you supply this. Sister Mary Edith R.S.M., Miss Eckel, or Sister Loretta Marie R.S.M. give instruc- tions and advise. The necessary training and back- ground is here, the skill in it is art. The 1965 annual staff went all out to make this yearys edition of the Mercywood, the best ever. Their aim was to present to you a true story of a year at Mercy, and to give the Mercy graduate a pictorial review of her high school days. With camera and pen, they strove to fulfill this aim. Lamps burned into the late hours as they worked frantically at meeting deadlines. Of course, the success of the annual is not clue to the work of the staff members alone. The co-operation, sup- port, and efforts of Sister Mary Julian, annual advisor, the faculty, and the entire student body contributed greatly to the final publication of this yearis annualethe 1965 Mercywood. Retreat masters Fr. W. Przbylaki O.F.M. and Fr. J. McCoy helped spiritually pre- pare the Mercians; teen problems, moral habits and states of life were thoroughly discussed A union with God becomes still closer with confes- sion, Mass, and reception of the Sacred Specim A11 experienced calmness in GocPs presence. Junior retreat ends on a peaceful note of thanksgiving to God, Mercians scan the multitudes of religious books during retreat in search of food for thought and meditation A11 minds facing forward to God. l59 cTWaant It LoverZyPJJ The rustle of long gowns, the sweet redolence of flowers and the murmur of excited voices sur- round Mercyis gTFair Ladiesii and escorts as they enter the Topper Club. The night evolves into one of dancing to Dan Lackey and his band, laugh- ing and joking with friends, and the signing of souvenir programs. The climax arrives as Kathy Oliver is crowned queen with attendants Pat Bockelman and Kay Bollingcr. The denouement comes as melodies of ccThree Stars Will Shine T0- night77 and TTMy Fair Ladyn echo through the darkened hall. Red roses, a sparkling tiara, strains of TTvc Grown Accustomed to the Days and happy smiles highlighted the Queenis dance. wThe days wefve waited for the promn reached a climax as Kathy Oliver is crowned Prom Queen. Father Lizza views from the bandstand the cnuple-crowdcd dance floor. TabIc-hopping is a common pastime enjoycd by those at the promA Two minutes provide enough time to remove shoes, tidy hair, powder nose, touCh-up lipstick and catch your breath One last spotlight dance. The queen candidates, Kay Bollinger, Kathy Oliver and Pat Bockelman, typify the theme of the 1965 Prom: iUVIy Fair Lady . m hwa r - -.,..Hw,1-,.. 7 IV To most people, it was just another night in June but to the Seniors of Mother of Mercy high school it was long-awaitedeGraduation. Simple white caps and gowns were donned by dignihed Mercians. Commencement exercises were held in front of M.M.H. on its spring-green carpet. As each girl received her diploma, you could tell by the glow of victory on her face that she was grate- ful to Almighty God, her parents, and her teach- ers for having the advantages of a complete edu- cation. Participation in Holy Mass began graduation. A Goal Accomplished As the hSChool Hymm is sung3 the graduates realize they will remain true to their alma mater. 162 General confusion arises as the long- awaited hour draws near. Slow half walkj tassels hanging at left and solemn faces fonn the proces- sional. The Class 0f 65 enters the world armed with the faith.
