Mercy's English department fulfills its obligation in the training of each student through these five main obiectives: to fully understand the English language, to become well versed in the the techniques of speech, to broaden the cultural background, to help develop an intellectual maturity, and to sharpen that sense of critical appreciation concerning literary creations. Fa- miliarizing themselves with English grammar rules - most dimcult to learn, and acquiring keen interest in many different types of authors and their works, is part of a Mercian's extensive liberal education. looking up information in Marcy's library isn't hard at all. In the classes of either Latin, Spanish or French, the girls learn the fundamentals of the language, the native cultures and customs, and the historical background which affects the people of the country. The role of foreign languages as a means of communication with other peoples has received the tremendous task of increasing friendly relationships among nations. Mercicns are ready to fill this need. Like this? asks Sister Mary Elise, R.S.M., as Charlene Lichtmcnn displays a poster of Roman Mythology to one of the Latin classes. Parlez-vous Francois? Do you speak French? Cora DeGuire, Cheryl Hauck, Sue Heim and Jean Sulutin agree wthe-heartedly with Miss Martino that learning French with the help of records is fun and easy. Besides French, Miss Martino also teaches Spanish and English to Mercy Students. 23
