Alter, D.D., LL,D., illustrious spiritual leader of the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio formally accepted appointment as the sixth Archbishop of Cincinnati with humble confidence and zeal. The memories of Archbishop Alter will live on in the people of Toledo, because, for 19 years, with courage and wisdom, he has directed the destinies of that important and rapidly growing diocese. His administration was fruitful and successful as to gain the special recognition of the Holy See to call attention to ability and talents, deserving a much larger and more serious trust. Archbishop Alter brings to his new assignment the benefits of long-accumulated experience, together with his rich endowments in the order of nature and grace. His former activities are proof of this. A huge crowd assembled to say goodbye when the former Tolede bishop left his native City. The prelate removed his black hat, blessed the crowd and shook scores of hands as he departed toward the train gate. The Archbishop has shown a distinguished leadership in education, social work and labor, that makes for a better way of American life. Cincinnatians are happy to add to their city the force he represents.
