Jnofgafc of .1 Ms'ccH, Lpnzbg fo1 gl li Ugcljlizl A haven ot peace and contentment. Yes, these words may well describe our little chapel overlookino the ever beautitul campus ot Mercy. Here a tew moments oi each day are lovingly dedicated to Qur Lord and Savior, lesus Christ, to bring to Him all the joys and sorrows ot our hioyli school lite. l-le listens with loving and tatherly interest to our prayers and petitions. Qur many prayers tor peace were answered when Our Blessed Lord gave us victory over our enemies and peace among nations. We leave this lovliest ot all places with deep love, new hope and new inspiration for the future days yet to come. As we bid farewell to our dear Alma Mater there are many events of our school days which we will not remember, but the lovely little chapel and our daily visits to Christ, Our Eternal Kino will always hold a high place in our lasting treasure ot memories. -to Ufam 1717155601 On a beautiful day in early September, l942, Our Blessed Lady lovingly smiled down upon the 31 eager, excited young maidens who for the first time passed through the portals of a high school dedicated to her honor. Cn that day Mother of Mercy welcomed us as her green yet lovable freshmen. A feeling of security was offered to us in the form of our Hbig sisters, whom we loved and respected as our ideals. The fun-rollicking day of initiation which they presented to us is one to be always remembered. Patched dresses worn inside-out, pigtails, tin curlers and oddly matched shoes and anklets were humiliating, yet so amusing. Our class set about choosing a mission project and adopted St. Philomena's Parish in the basin of Cincinnati. One of the highlights of our mission labors was the skating party we sponsored in order to raise funds for our adopted parish. At Christmas each of us brought a small toy for the small children of our mission. Surely we shall never forget their happy, glowing faces when at Christmas we visited them bringing with us our own Santa Claus laden with numerous gifts and surprises. To climax the year we presented our big sisters with a garden party complete with Carnation corsages and a tiny hatbox containing a lapel pin in the form of a little crocheted bonnet. Before we knew it, September had again rolled around, bringing us back to Mercy as sophomores. We had lost 6 of our original members but this was well compensated by the 59 new members of our class. As a result our class was divided into two homerooms. Both classes however sponsored a theater party for the benefit of our missions. - Our second year at Mother of Mercy was climaxed by a picnic at MacFarland woods given in honor of the senior class. God blessed us with lovely spring weather which helped to make the day a memorable one. Before one could realize it we had become luniors. We were then 88 in number, having lost 8 girls and having gained 12. Again the two lunior classes demonstrated their fine spirit of cooperation by sponsoring a dance in honor of the senior class. None of us shall ever forget the planning, work and enjoyment that made our Ulanuary lump such a grand success. And of course one of the most important events of our lunior year was the selecting of our class ringsesymbols of four years of study, work and fun. Scissors, pictures and fashion magazines also played an important role throughout the year, for with the aid of these and our vivid imaginations we fashioned for each senior a yearbook of treasured memories. ' The climax of this happy year was the never-tosbe-forgotten lunior-Senior prom at Hartwell country club. Page 14 1 , The year that always had seemed so very far away finally arrived. Here we werewfull-pledged seniors and entitled to all the privileges of such. Ours were the beautiful gold class rings bearing the year 1946. Ours was the senior lobby with its comfy lounges and merry voiced piano. Ours was the honor of visiting Our Lord each morning in His little tabernacle home in the chapel. Ours was the privilege of being first on the big school busses. And yes, ours too were our beloved little sisters, of whom no one could have been prouder. We soon discovered however, that senior life at Mercy did not consist only of privileges. We also had many responsibilities. Through perfect cooperation and hard work Gleanings our schcol paper, was published six times and was Well worth the praise it received. We also put forth our best efforts to make our annual one of the finest in the school's history. In keeping with Mercy's tradition, we chose as our class patron the beloved child saint, Little Agnes, and honored her duly by a program on her feast day. It was on this day that we proudly displayed our red and white class ribbons for the first time. The names Amy, Beth, Meg, and 'llo will always hold a special meaning in our hearts because Little Women was chosen as our class play. Our class also received recognition when a number of its members took active parts in debates and lunior Town Meetings. With the cooperation of the junior classes we gave a dance, The Apple Bounce, for the benefit of the missions. Another dance never to be forgotten was the Mercy- Elder dance, Hearts Hop, the first of its kind in Mercy's history. The year passed all too quickly and lune soon arrived, bringing with it the final days of our high school life. On the fourth of lune the 84 members of the class of '46 assembled in the halls of Mercy for the last time. As we marched in pro- cession, clad in white caps and gowns for class night exercises, our minds reviewed our years at Mother of Mercy, four of the happiest years of our lives. The laughter and singing in the lobby and visits to the lake, the rush of changing classes, long hours of study and the smiling face of Our Blessed Lady from her throne in the beautiful stained glass window are now only memories. But our actual departure from Mercy came on lune 7 when for the first time in her history Mercy joined the ranks of Diocesan Catholic High Schools at St. Xavier field house for the reception of diplomas. How proud we were to represent our beloved Mercy at such an impressive assembly of Catholic youth. This was our formal goodbye to Father Connell, our own Sister Mary Emily and all the teachers and friends we held so dear. This was our farewell to Mother of Mercy and our happy high school days. Though a feeling of reluctance always accommodates goodbyes, our hearts were lightened by the realization that on some future day we should again meet-that day when the 84 members of the class of '46 will gather at the feet of our Mother of Mercy in our heavenly home. Although her smiling face and cheery voice is missed by all, we know that she has found peace and happiness in this, her chosen field. May God bless her always and grant her all the graces she will need to continue in her field and to always remain just, our lanief' Page 46 X Cfaaa gnfzofzffacgif While traveling along the new super-highway in this atomic year l959 your roving reporters gathered some interesting bits of information about the Class of '46 of Mother of Mercy high school, which is holding its reunion dinner this evening at the beautiful Shangri-La Room of the Plaza Terrace Hotel. As we journeyed to our destination in our plane-mobile, designed by Mary Lee Hirschberg, we could not help but notice the wonderful engineering feat performed in the construction of this highway. The eminent engineer Ruth Volmer with the able assistance of her two junior partners Marilou Dunphy and Marian Hertsenberg are the persons responsible for this stupendous task. A few miles down the road we observed the huge billboards designed by loan Fehring. She featured an advertisement of the chain of drug stores owned by Virgila Nienaber whose motto is, Pills For Your llls. Her chief pill makers are Betty O'Connor and Margaret Meehan. One of her stores is located in Rocketville the newest of the ultra-modern cities, perfected by Marian Reck and Elizabeth Dowling. The recently elected mayor, Ruth Herbe, and her councilwomen Betty Putz, Sylvia Obernostheide, Betty Berg, Marcella Wedig and Mary Pat l..aPorte, are conducting a spring campaign to raise funds for the erection of the new Art and Music Institute. This institute will engage such famous personages as Shirley Sauer and Marilyn Murray, tworld renown artistsj and Rosemary Bastian, the great sculptress. Evelyn Herdeman has been selected as head of the music department with Elsie Klett and Rosemary Mueller acting as her assistants. The concert pianist, Rita Mae lauch, will play Carolyn Dorrmann's Ebony Concerto for the black keys only, at the formal opening. Approaching the outskirts of Cincinnati we stopped at Schlecht's Super Market operated and owned by Dell Schlecht. Her employees are Mary Helen Squires, head cashier, Ginny Eppler, chief nut cracker, and Carol Meyer, in charge of the safe delivery of unbroken crackers. n As we neared the hotel, we were attracted by the beacon on the roof top which has been converted into an airfield for rocket ships. Designed by Alice Mitchell, these ships were constructed by the Kramer Silver Streak Spacecraft Corporation, whose president is Margie Kramer and vice-president is Melva Ruprecht. One of the ships, piloted by Miriam Carle, has just landed. lean McGuire and Bernice Honkamp, the stewardesses, are aiding the passengers in alighting from the ship. Among the passengers are such famous people as Margie Allingham and lean Cavanaugh, noted stage and screen starsg also Viola and Cecilia Gramaglia and Francis Laiveling, the notable dance trio known as Cy, Vy, and Fy. They have just completed a month's engagement at the Spanish Dallion Room of the Ambassador Hotel in New York, Stepping from the ship now is the former Cferry Foster with her famous archiologist husband, whose discovery of the Queen of Sheba's tomb has brought him into the limelight. Upon entering the spacious lobby, we were greeted by the hotel manager's wife the former Mary Schirmann, and were graciously assigned to our rooms by Betty Benjamin. Betty informed us that loan Wubbolding, the acguatic star, would appear at the Blue Marlin Pool. Before dinner, we attended the style show featuring Betty Willing, Mary Alley, and Betty Siebenbergen. All the fascinating clothes were designed by Mary lo Schmees, who has just developed a new fabric made from glass fibre. Mary lo has recently named Irene Windholtz her new head seamstress. Covering this affair for her newspaper, the Heineman Herald, edited by Ann Heineman, is Norma Specht. Her daily column Splashin in Fashion appears in seven syndicates. The famed cartoonist, Rita Brockhaus, is also here sketching caricatures of the celebrities present for the dinner. These drawings will probably appear in tomorrow's edition of the Herald Mary Ann Schlinkert, whose honey-colored hair has won for her national Page 47 recognition as the foremost model for Preen Shampoo and who appeared earlier in the fashion show, is now being photographed by Shirley Meyer. Her picture will adorn the next issue of Model magazine. With the dinner hour approaching, the guests have begun to move toward the spacious dining hall. The repast is under the expert supervision of Peggy Louderback, head dietician and Mary Ann and Mary Lou Korb, who have perfected a new beverage known as Korb's Kafineless Koffeef' which will be served for the first time at this dinner. Near the door a slight disturbance caused by the misplacing of Wilma l-loesel's reservation has just been settled. The waiter argued insistently but her persuasive powers soon won him over. With her experience as a debator on the question of the necessity of floating soap it was not too difficult for her to overrule his argument. Qne of the first to be seated at the table is Claire Brodbeck, wife of Lord Thaddeus Kanine, heir to the Kanine fortune. Accompanying her is her traveling companion, Audrey Yates, whose recent engagement to Phyllis Schlageter's husband's brother has been much discussed in society circles. Just entering the room is the staff of Mercy Hospital. The hospital staff under the competent supervision of the two brilliant surgeons, Mary Jane Graf, and Dorothy Ross, has recently been awarded the Nobel Prize for surgery. They are accompanied on this occasion by their secretary' assistant Edith Kallmeyer. Following the two eminent physicians is the group of nurses who distinguished themselves last week by their heroic rescue work in saving the trapped patients of the hospital when a terrific blaze broke out in one of the wards. Two who especially distinguished themselves are Marian Martini and Barbara Schaeffers. They came with Rose Marie Kolesa, whose jet-propelled saddleback revertable, enabled them to make the trip in nothing flat. Une tire was the only exception. After an inspection tour about the room we discovered there were a few vacant places. Upon questioning various individuals we learned the whereabouts of the five absentees. Rita Mae Butscha and loan Bigelow were unable to attend as they are on another of their round the world jaunts. When they return they plan to write a book based upon their travels. This should prove to be very interesting. Pat Roll the dancing star of the Cornfield Follies of 1959 now playing on Broadway, was detained due to the illness of her understudy who was to take her place for this evening. The all girl baseball team, organized by Mary Storch and Audrey Waechter, is on tour. This fact accounted for their absence. With the completion of the delicious meal the floor was cleared for dancing. Margaret Nienaber who volunteered to be toastmistress for the evening, introduced Lena Martinelli of the Metropolitan Qpera. She consented to sing the popular Nabannana Refrigerataf' Following her rendition couples gradually drifted on the dance floor and among the most graceful was lean Guetle dancing with her very handsome husband the owner of the Star Diamond Mine. She was wearing a lovely diamond tiara and necklace. Mary Niehaus is one of the happiest persons here. She has just received word that she has been named the sole heir to the Mackay fortune. Mary has been table-hopping telling her friends of her decision to donate fifty thousand dollars to her Alma Mater for the purpose of building a new wing. Over in the corner, Betty Milner, national athletic director of high schools, is discussing with Mary Espelage, her co-worker, the new procedure she has developed for gym classes. Her revolutionary idea requires no exercises for the class. The hour is getting late now and the crowd is thinning but there are still a few groups renewing old acquaintances. lean Kurtz, the vetinarian, is speaking with Myrtle Hoesl, whose horse won the Kentucky Derby. Seated at the table with them are Theresa Engel and Dorothy Mendel, personal secretaries to the president of the U. N. O. Over in the corner the hotel's bookkeeper, Margaret Stadler and her two assistants, Eleanor Schrand and iean Klein are tallying the evenings expenses. Since we are not mathematically inclined, we will now take our departure. We leave the future in the hands of these competent young women to shape and mould the world as they see fit. We are sure they will be a complete success.
