Page 48 81444 94441044; Mother of iWercy Opened her doors to thirty-six new pupils. the Class of ,45, in September, 1941V We were the usual lot of freshies, scared. wide-eyed and just a bit curious. The Seniors welcomed us with three days of initiation. Oh what an initiationl Black stockings, bedroom slippers and an upsweep hairdoi which kept coming down, were our fate. High school life settled upon us and we fervently adopted the Mercy mission spirit. This was shown by the Christmas party for the little children of St. Annts parish in downtown Cincinnati. Santa Claus came, in the person of a freshman and for sometime after the halls echoed with the de- lighted ohs and ahs 0f the happy Children. We demonstrated our dramatic ability by a burlesque presentation of LaCiy 0f the Lake to the delight of the entire school. As all good things our freshman year drew to a Close. In the theme of the times The Big-Little Sister party was patriotic in motiveeeven t0 the red, white and blue ice cream. And then we were no longer freshies. The Sophomore year came-Oh yes, we were wise fools but also. the largest Class in the school for two more girls joined our happy fold. St. Anne was our mission project, and the ringing of Yuletide bells found us again entertaining our little friends. TheSe were the days of the Lobblie Club, the incessant playing of HYve Heard That Song Before, in the lobby and the struggles in Home EC and Biology. Spring came and with it the Senior-Sophomore picnic. VVelll never forget that wonderful day at NlCFarland Woods. Our Iunior year brought many changes and we looked forward to the promising merry timesi Wle had suddenly grown to the grand total of eighty-two members. The class was divided into two homerooms which brought a spirit of competition into our activities. Many sported their class rings the very first day of school and it wasrft long before the rest had theirs too. We worked ardently for our missions, the Immaculate Conception Mission and the Zuni Mission From the response we received we knew our efforts were rewarded by God and the satisfaction of giving. We were a proud class when one of our members brought honors t0 Mercy by winning at the finals of the Oratorical Contest and also by being:r elected President of the local conference of the C. S. M. C. XVe made the Senior's year books and were so happy to present them at the Innior-Senior Prom. Since Our Senior year had begun we did things with the thought that this was the year. We found our little sistersH and tried to make them feel at home which wasn't hard at all. We had so much fun with them at the various parties. Everyone worked to make a success of our class play ttAnnouncing Antonia? We were represented on several Junior Town Meetings. Our activities included the traditional St. Agnes Day program, entertainment for the Mother's Club. We had so many wonderful things this last year but the best was the senior retreat conducted by Father Gelin. His wondrous, simple way of telling us His message made this our most unforgetable retreat. By his guidance may we continue in His Light, On May 29, seventy-eight white shirts billowed on the spacious green lawns of iwlother of Mercy. For the last time the Class of 115 assem bled at the tmnt entrance. Father Connell's teasing, the gatherings around the piano in the lobby and the hours of study CD are no longer ours except in happy memories. The ever watchful gaze of Our Lady as she looks down from her pedestal will guide us through life. Go, and come not back from your far away. And it men ask you why ye smile amid sorrow, Tell them ye grieve, for your hearts know today. Tell them ye smile, for your eyes know tomorrow. Certainly today, when their thoughts are turning back hfteen years, they recall pleasant memories of their school days. No matter what place they hold in the world of today, always there is a. place in their hearts for their Alma Nlater and old classmates. It is odd to think that in the very halls this reporter now walks, these great women once walked in plain blue uniforms, carrying worn school books. ThaFS Helen Mary Elias relating to old friends the events of her last lecture tour, when she spoke on her favorite subject, HThe Effects of the Architecture of Grecian Backdoors on Our Windern Mode Of Living? After the worries and problems of a busy school day the Chapel offered a haven of restea place where you could talk to God. Kneeling before His altar, tmubles were forgotten while you honored your greatest and dearest Friend, Jesus Christ. He listened with interest to the account of your activities. In those days of war he heard your prayers, and answered them by giving us V-E Day You left the Chapel with a renewed hope and faith in the kindness and mercy of your Divine Lord. As you leave these hallowed halls, you take with you a picture of the humble little Chapel at Atercy, which will forever shine as a Guiding Light in your memory Palm? 6 X For the first time in the history of Axiother of Mercy. a journalism club was formed and its membership was restricted to those who contributed articles to Gleamings the student publication. Beneath the flying banners of the Queen,s white and blue, Mercfs C. S. AW. C. experienced conquests and realized great objectives. XVith Nlary, Queen of the Apostles, before them as their guide, the officers endeavored to encourage and direct the efforts of the Crusaders in carrying on an all-out campaign for the missions. Because of this, our Mission Unit has been outstanding in its enthusiasm as shown in all the activities from counting stamps to giving an oratorical speech, We have sent various materials and the all-important thing, prayer, to the missionaries who are the soldiers of Christ in His army. Page 7U Nlother of Aiercy became very active in scientific matters this year by ofTering every general field of science that is to be found in a high school. In the pictures are shown classes of Physics, Chemistry, Home Economics and Biology. 30mething new was inaugerated in the scientific department in the form of two science clubs, one the Iunior Science Club, the other, the Senior Science Club. Wyith Jeanne Dossman as president of the latter and .Mary Nickum, president of the former, the clubs met bi-monthly and the meetings were con- ducted in an interesting manner. Nlovies were obtained through these clubs and shown once a week at the regular science periods. The Science department, under the supervision of Sister Anary Joseph, RSJL, and Sister hlary Albert, R.SJL, functioned exceedingly well andvthe girls benefited much from the classes. This is the national recognition society for the promotion of speech for use and has its headquarters at the Northwestern University School of Speech. Sister hlary Carlos, RSJL, has a great interest in the Chapter and during the past year she has guided the thirteen active members through many activities and successes. The first production of the school year was HSinister House,U a three-act mystery melodrama The large audience at the performances of Sunday and Tuesday, November 12 and 1-1, enjoyed a. fine production. During the Christmas holidays the members arranged a program of read- ings and songs which they presented at the homes of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Judge Bell's Home for the Blind, and The St. George Home for Con- valescents. It was deeply appreciated by the recipients and gave much personal satisfaction and happiness to the participants. Judge Bell's Hume fur the Blind asked Biasque and Gavel to return around Easter and they gladly com- plied with the request. On Sunday and Tuesday. Aiay 6 and 8, the Masque and Gavel player's joined with the members of the Elder dramatic Club to present Sing A Song Of Sixteen.H One of the largest and enthusiastic audiences ever at .Hercy witnessed this novel three-act comdey. Pdgla' 1-6 Student government was again active at Mercy in the form of Student Council. Under the capable leadership ofits president, Martha Jean Edmonds, the council functioned as the governing organization of the school, It regulated activities of classes and attended to the enforcement of school regulations con- cerning uniform, silence and attendance. Each class was allowed five representatives to Student Council, those being the class officers. The old system of honorary members was revived, thus allowing the C. S. 31.
