'vi' 5 l 4 K T CHEMISTRY l'1Rll.-XPS you've notieed the pe- culiar odors pertneating the halls and science room during and after the third and fifth periods. These odors can he easily traced hack to the chem- istry class experiments. These experiments involve one of the essential abilities that a chemist must have: that is, to state clearly what you see and smell. Chemistry is also interesting in that it deals with the constituents of our environinentg air, water. wood, rnetals. their properties and relation- ships. .Xll this proves interesting and shows how many things of seeming unirnportance are invaluahle and how we are henefited hy the knowledge of their properties and constituents. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE Illz agriculture classes were for- tunate this year in having the new large workshop in which to work. ln addition to this niany new tools were purchased. .ks the result, the lwoys turned out inany fine products. .Xgriculture lll and lk' worked in the shop entirely. having very little text-hook work. 'llhis class turned out sonie fine hunting knives, floor and talvle lamps and also made the forge and workshop tahles used hy the .Xgrieulture classes and had eharge of the installation of tnuch of the Ina- chinery used. gkgriculture l and ll worked in the shop two days a week. 'llhe other three days were spent in studying 'Ukniznal llushandry and HSoil and Klanagetnentf' 'l'hese classes carried horne-projects in addition to their daily class work. k e 1' HOME ECONOMICS i fx S, T. -l Hli home economics department has been a very busy place this year with the varied activities of three classes being car- i. X -' ' ried on. ln addition to the regular cloth- .. Qu- A ing construction and food preparation work .i 1 in beginning and advanced classes, there 'i ' have been interesting units on personal ap- It 2' pearance. social relations. child care and E - home furnishing. .l N TL- 'Z The girls have demonstrated their abil- 1' ity in various ways throughout the year. l 'Z 'l'he hot dish for the kindergarten was pre- l ljo ' pared by girls in home economics classes -- l 1 - until 'llhanlisgiving 'l'he faculty dinner . I l each month was planned and prepared un- ? der their supervision, and the pie sales tl E gave everyone a chance to judge the girls' 6 i- ability in the kitchen. ln the advanced class the girls took some educational tripsg one to the Southwest lliashington Fair held at Puyallup in September and another to the lmversity of Xliashington, home economics open house day in April. INDUSTRIAL ARTS 'l'l'lDl'iX'l'S taking shop are very fortunate in having the modern building and equipment they have this year. At the beginning of the year, the shop stu- dents. under the instruction of hlr. Nelson. began fixing up the new quarters. Cupboard space for students equipment was made and additional shop tables were constructed to accommodate the in- creasing number of students taking the course. Une special innovation was the stool raclt where stools used by drawing classes can be put out ol the way when drawing classes are not in session. Drawing boards have been made to lit in the vises. In this way the boards can be held securely while the pupils are at work. The new lathe purchased this year has proved very useful. Another addition to equipment is a bench where tools can be sharpened and lumber is stored underneath. All in all. the new shop is a decided im- provement over the cramped quarters of former years. Students have the advantage of more storage space, working room, bet- .ter opportunity for systematic arrangement and use of materials. Page Twenty-six
