New additlons such as new assistant principals, relocated teachers, new teachers, and new rules that were strictly enforced . . . blended into MPHS . . . combining old with new . . . all united with the belief that energy is the key to any successful production As usual . . . The football season set the overall mood for the school during the Fall. Starting off with a win over Laurel. the Tigers valiantly fought off a losing season for the next four games. One more loss to Ocean Springs temporarily set the Tigers back, but school spirit rose to the occasion . . . Meridian and Gulfport fell to the wayside. The most amazlng fact Is that somehow everyone ls aware of thls . . . students and faculty alike! When she became our prlnclpal, she became the flrst female prlnclpal of MPHS. and the only female prlnclpal of a hlgh school In Mlsslsslppl. These are a matter of record; what she really became . . . was the leader of 1,500 students, 90 teachers, a mllllon obllgatlons, and responslbllltles. Dr. Burkltt came to us prepared. She recelved her BA from the Unlv. of Miss., her Masters from USA. and her PHD ln education admlnlstratlon from the Unlv. of So. Mlsslsslppl. Before she came here. she was a teacher In Mem- phls, Tenn., Mlneral Wells ngh School, Texas, and Pascagoula ngh. She was secondary language coordlnator for the Pas. school district, and later became Asslstant prlnclpal for Pas Jr. High. Dr. Burkltt also had experience In the us. Army and U.S. Dept. of Defense In Germany. Dr. Burkltt has been an excellent principal. She understands teachers' problems because she Is a former teacher. Only a teacher can understand a teacher. Because she ls compassionate, students have learned to respect her, as well as go to her with their problems, academic as well as personal. Ev- eryone will agree. that she only asks you to do your best and to try to help her make this a school we can all be proud of. Coach Haynes Coach Krebbs Coach Hamllton Coach McConey Coach Facclnnl Coach Alexander Whether MPHS has a winning season or a losing season, we are most fortunate to have a group of men who are leaders, and who represent quality without compromise. 65 66 THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR . . . Contray to some oplnlon . . . spirit, the will to prevail and to do one's best was exempli- fied during the 1981-1982 Football Season. Splrlt shown by the players, coaches, cheerleaders. band, student body, staff, and communlty ... rose to a climax by the all important Pascagoula game. Knowing that there's always next year, helped ease the pain a little. The 1981-1982 TIGERS had a typical opening season game against Laurel on September 4, as they won 7-6. There were alot of fumbles, penalties, mistakes, broken plays and leg cramps We made mistakes . .. five lost fumbles, nine penalties, and an intentional grounding call. Being in excellent condition, we were able to overcome these errors and beat Laurel. Blocklng and tackling, not reputation, wins games, and that is what the Davidson Warriors did best as they whipped the tar out of the Tigers, during our second game . . . 21-0. The Mobile Warrlors were not intimidated by our size, or $63 ranking. They attacked from the opening whistle. and thoroughly dominated the game. A HARD week of practice faced the Tigers down at Dantzler Stadium, before they would go on the road to Theodore, Alabama. e19 - Rodney Moore, under heavy pressure, hlt 6 out of 16 e88 - Bobby Farris laments. passes for 83 yards and two interceptions. 67 Expectation was at an all time high on the night of the Theodore, Alabama game. But it was the Bobcats who came out on top . . . 13-42. Although we lost, Charles Croon, who moved to wingback from the defensive secondary, finished with 134 yards on six attempts. Nathan Wonsley, passed the hundred yard mark for the second time with 101 yards in 19 rushes. A hard fought battle against a tough team summed the evening up to a tee. Once again, we tried to look toward the next game . . when we would meet the Biloxi Indians. Penalties . . . took the Tigers to their third straight defeat as they lost to Biloxi . . . 14-27. Charles Croon and Richard Jackson gave every- one a gllmpse of hope with interceptions during the first half . . . after several penalties. Ty Wolverton, a junior wide receiver. had every- one's hearts fluttering when the ball richocheted off a Biloxi man's hands and Ty pulled the foot- ball to make a touchdown and save an intercep- tion. This game was a perfect example of the football season . . . plenty of excitement, hope, and dis- appointment for all Moss Point Tigers. One could only wonder what the next week against Pica- yune would bring! Coach Molden, Head Coach at Kreole doing his part . . . help- ing out. Despite the fog and rain, Tiger fans weren't dis- appointed that night! Nathan Wonsley made ev- eryone forget the weather with his 126 yards gained and three touchdowns against the hard hitting Rebels. Charles Croon added 48 yards on six carries. Coach Miller said, As a team, we had our best effort of the year. Eagerly, we all looked forward to Ocean Springs. M4 - Jerry Redmond receives congratulations from manager McNeil. e31 - Nathan Wonsley and 3:93 - Tony Jones share a victory smile! Coach Miller's hometown of Picayune showed no mercy when the Tigers came to play on their turf. The 14-28 loss to the Maroon Tide, was blamed on apathy. The skill and talent was there. but in a raw form that never came untracked. The players who really put everything into it were in tears on the way back to the bus; and that ride back to Moss Point took much longer than . . . the ride up there. Touchdown!!! 1f70 - Tony McLeod 69 70 A dejected Coach Niles. Coach Miller 21-27 Ocean Springs UPSET Moss Point What an understatement. Shocked Stunned .. It was the first time a GCC squad had ever beaten a BIG EIGHT TEAM! And beat us they did . . . It looked as if Ocean Springs were going to be blown out of the stadium, until Moss Point gave away back to back fumbles. Interceptions and penalties sewed up the loss . . . once again. Revenge was so sweet . . . as the Meridian Wild- cats came to vlslt. . . . Charles Croon Mil, showed his class and skill by intercepting a pass. returnlng it for 60 yards for a touchdown, and returning a fumble 24 yards to set up another score. This coastal zone victory was a defensive strug- gle all the way as the freezing wind off of the water, hindered the passing and kicking games of both teams. Defensive standouts were Croon, Levis Moore, Richard Gildersleeve and Glen Nettles. Moss Polnt played as a team that night and it was a memorable game for all loyal fans that be- lieved In the Tigers! n4 - 0.0. Charles itQB-James Odom Croon W,t lid 71 72 Moss Point finally played four quarters of awe- some football on October 30. The Gulfport Ad- mirals were put to sea . . . at 31-14. Once again, Nathan Wonsley ran wild breaking a 1,000 yards rushed. It was during the second half when our defense took over, that we cinched the game. Linesman Richard Gliders- leeve picked up a fumble and barreled 55 yards for a TD. Curtis Rockwell, Chris Harell, Brian Lindsay and Phil Dickson, Jimmy Allen, Eric Ingram, Anthony Jones, Bobby Farris, Ty Wolverton, Jerry Redmond, Stan Martin all provided ex- cellent blocking for Wonsley that night. Con- sistency has always been Coach Miller's secret and that night the Tigers didn't let him . . . or us down. Pascagoula Goula Goula Goulall Everyone at MPHS was ready and up to repre- sent the Coastal Zone in the Big Eight Players, but it was Just not meant to be. The injuries of Curtis Rockwell and Charles Croori were a major factor, we soon found out. Penalties came back to haunt the Tigers and most of those were quite questionable. The last two minutes of play had all 7,000 fans cheering. Moss Point looked like it had won 17-13 qlth 3:33 left to play, until the Panthers replied with their own calling card. The fans got their money's worth because the Tigers did their best. Wait till next year . . . echoed through War Memorial Stadium. And that is exactly what we will do! 73 74 TIGERS ON THE MOVE yW-..
