Looking at High School life, it's easy to say that evrything follows the same routine. If you look at all of the fun which goes hand in hand with the learning, it's easy to see it's not all routine. Breaking the routine was different for everyone. For some it meant dressing up during Homecoming Week, attending meetings, trying out for athletics, or class plays. In the end the students' efforts were rewarded by a winning team, precision marching and earned credit, a driver's license, or a diploma. Many students could look back over the years and discover, Maybe it wasn't wasted time after all. L4 '2'; 424 This year teachers found that their involvements at MPHS wasn't confined to giving tests and hav- ing hall duty. Though most faculty members supported the student body, some teachers sur- passed the realm of duty when necessity re- quired. They sacrificed their free time to work on Home- coming floats, chaperone dances, sponsor class activities and participate in many school func- tions. Still others, devoted time and energy to make their club projects successful. ALL PROGRESS HAS RESULTED FROM PEOPLE WHO TOOK UNPOPULAR POSITIONS. . ADLAI STEVENSON Mr. David Meadows. Calvin Monroe scored another touchdown on a 16 yard pass from Jeff Standard. Joe Powe also scored a touchdown on a one yard plunge. It was a typical first game. Coach Miller said. We made some mistakes on offense we wouldn't have made if we had practiced harder. But thafs my fault, we'll never go into a game again without good, hard practices. He kept his promise! Number 1!!! The defense played well but we didn't play as a team. I'm happy for the win, but the win is just keeping score. We have a good team, but we must work at it. Sometimes when a team has talent, it thinks it can turn it on and off when it wants to. One of these days it isn't going to rev up when you want it too. The Moss Point Tigers were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the polls, but after their exhibition against Theo- dore, A disgusted Coach Miller looked to the Heav- ens and said I think somebody up there likes us. I don't think we were ready to play and that's what worries me. Moss Point fumbled away the ball 5 times in the game. While Theodore lost control 4 times. It was a Moss Point fumble at its own 9 by Nathan Wonsley late in the first half, which set up Theodore's first touchdown. After this fumble, a blocked field goal attempt, and another one by Lee Roy Wonsley. It became evident that Moss Point wasn't going to score. unless it blocked a punt or recovered a fumble in the end zone. And that's just what the Tigers did, scoring twice in less than a minute. From the early planning stages, from floats to the climatic crowning of the Homecoming queen, spir- its soared during Homecoming Week. To promote a spirited and festive atmosphere, each day was designated as a special dress day and Rock and R0 day. Finally, on Friday October 3. 1980, Homecoming Day arrived accompanied by sunshine and high ex- pectations. Kick off at 7:30 pm in Dantzlar Stadium was accompanied by a cool breeze with a stand full of excited spectators. By halftime the score stood at 0-7 the Tides favor. The halftime show consisted of the announcement of the float winner, the door contest winner, pre- sentation of Maids and Escorts and of course, the announcement of Homecoming Queen Norma Myles. Although we lost 7-10, it was agreed by all that Homecoming 1980 was a big success. BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS . . . Picayune, which upset M.P. last year, put the winning points on the scoreboard with 15 seconds left to play on a 25 and 0 field goal. This loss knocked M.P. from the unbeat- en ranks. J May brings the beginning and end for seniors-a new way of life, friendships may fade, but the memories remain. One day you'll look back and see if you remember . . . Those feelings you had as a Sophomore . . . Too shy at the first pep rallies in the gym. You wouldn't yell no matter how hard Miss Conn, Miss Hall, or Mrs. Shepard begged. Suddenly gaining confidence enough to win two pep rallies will you remember the night we beat Pascagoula, cramming for a test 5 minutes before class. get- ting your drivers license and finally leaving your mother at home? How about getting check- outs , selling doughnuts, sneaking M 8. M's, building Homecoming floats, the Womenless Beauty contest, the Gong Show, registration, re- port cards, detentions, the lunch room food, the Junior class play, Hurricane Frederic, Junior- Senior Prom, class rings, T-Shirts with sayings, disco, the Bonfire, field trips, gheri Curls, Nikes, straight leg jeans, the plight four hostages in Iran, Mr. Jones and Miss Conn leaving and Dr. Burkitt arriving as our new principal. The new vocational building, the condeming of the gym, Amanda Cowart tSophJ and Thomas Fox tSrJ Tiger Mascot, losing Classmates and friends such as Regina Miller, and Cathy Seely. Miss MPHS: Muriel Lett Mr. MPHS: Thomas Fox 181 182 IN MEMORIUM . . . A.C. HOLLIS Mr. Alvin C. Hollis was born on September 8, 1920 in Philadelphia, Mississippi. He lived in Moss Point for 22 years. During these 22 years Mr. Hollis spent his time and effort trying to make Moss Point's schools a little better. He was the Principal at Ed Mayo, where he was in charge of dicsipline. He was always fair on his decisions about things that happened in the school, never failing to listen to both sides of the story. Mr. Hollis never said much around school, but when you went into his office you knew what was coming without any words! After leaving Ed Mayo, Mr. Hollis went to Magnolia Jr. High where he was assistant Principal. He then came to the High School where he was an assistant of Mr. Denson who is over the YETP program. He made all the students with whom he came in contact with feel great. He was a member of the East Moss Point Baptist Church; National Education Association; University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Assocation; and also the Moss Point Touchdown Club, where he helped by taking up tickets for football and basketball games. It would be hard for any of us who knew this easy going man to remember him any way other than with a smile on his lips. When football season rolls around this fall down at Dantzler Stadium, his graciousness will be deeply missed, but we can't help but imagine that he is still with us. J.P.
