At school we witnessed tackey day con- trasted the next day with dress -up day. Then the very noisey bell day was fol- lowed by an overwhelming show of unified Tiger spirit on blue and white day. After school was another story. Sopho- mores learned of the headache as well as the fun of constructing a float. Seniors, although eager to work had a hard time starting. The best float came from the band under the theme of Top Cat. That night was certainly one to be remem- bered by all of the girls in the court. Miss Debbie Sandifer served as Homecoming Queen. Escorted down centerfield by Randy Bond, she was crowned by principal Ray Blackledge, and presented a dozen roses by Tony Gray. We are truly proud of our 1972 Homecoming Court. 42 ' i '35. ; , ,3;an M'gi'?f$ f y. . .sziia Am a Maid- Denise Priddy Escort- Tim Dryden Maid- Carolyn Rankin Escort- Harvey Caples Maid- Martha Stringer Escort- Warren Deas Maid- Karen Parks Escort- Mark Wells Maid- Ida. The entire student body worked for many weeks promoting their class royalty. The band members not only supported their royalty, but they also devoted many long, hard hours to the plans and decora- tions, insuring the success of the Ball. Crowned King and Queen of the Ball were Chuck Stuart and Charles Cooper, Susan Priddy and Dorothy Caples, who were the repre- sentatives of the hard-working Senior class. They collected for their efforts a total of $1300. Reigning Archduke and Archduchess, from the Band, were Bruce Bullock and Frank Rogers, Ila Mae Dye and Ella Plainer. The ball had as its theme Camelot . Held at the Escatawpa Gym, the festivity was attended by many MPHS students. Music was furnished by Volta. The Marketing DECA Chap- ter, sponsored by Mr. Bill Hutto, has gained in its first year a list of prizes and awards. At district competition held in Picayune, the chapter came home with two third place winners and one second. Minnie Smith placed third in sales demonstration, and Kenneth McMellon third in window display, with Art Oliver placing second as boy student of the year. 23 members represented the Moss Point chapter at state competition held in Biloxi, again coming home with a number of awards. Kenneth McMellon placed second in win- dow display, Art Oliver was named as State District 4 Vice President, and Darlene Baker and Shirley Broussard placed second for their manuals on Studies in Marketing. To make these trips the members of the chapter had several fund raising projects throughout the year. Things such as car washes, bake sales, and sales of different goods were carried on all year. 62 CL UBS OF AMERICA Moss Point's other DECA chapter, Cooperative DECA, is just as active. This is its second year at MPHS and this year they have a new sponsor, Mr. Paul Johnson. After its election of new officers, the chapter held a formal installation in the high school cafeteria. Along with the installation was the formal initiation of new members. At the local conference, winners were chosen to go to district competition. At this con- ference, held at the high school, the winners were, Randy Bond- job interview, William Lee-sales demonstration, Lana T aylor-public speaking, Bob Ehlers-window display, Bill Firth-advertising. Chosen as Most Outstanding Boy and Girl of the Year in the chapter were Debbie Vinson and Bob Ehlers. These students went on to compete in district com- petition in Picayune. Winners at district were Randy Bond-job interview, and Debbie Vinson-Girl Student of the Year. At state conference Debbie Vinson was elected as sec- retary of the State Association of DECA. Randy Bond, retiring president of the associa- tion, presided over the conference held in Biloxi. The chapter is also the sponsor of a radio show called DECA Speaks . This program is aired on two local stations, WPMP and WCIS every week. It not only allows DECA to speak , but other clubs at MPHS as well. Cooperative DECA members have appeared before several civic and trade organizations throughout the community and have participated in such school activities as Homecom- ing, in which they sponsored a float. The Student Council of 1972-73, in an attempt to improve student government at Moss Point High, has gained respect from both the student body as well as faculty. The officers and representatives elected by the student body, are continually seeking ways to make Moss Point High a place to respect and to be proud of. One of the Council's better efforts was the much improved Tiger Shoppe. The Shoppe provided students with such things as school supplies, snacks, and spirit equipment. The Student Council was represented at the Southern Association of Student Councils by Jim Williams, Wendy Wilkinson, Frances Hunt, and Tony Gray. At the convention, our delegates gained recognition for MPHS when they were elected to the position of vice- president of the SASC. T hey were accompanied on their trip, which was held in South Carolina, by Mr. Darrel Perrien. The sponsors of this year's Council was Mr. Tommy Hewlett and Mr. Alton Joseph. ART MISS AMELIA TURNER Art I 8 II, B.A. Uni. of Miss. 139 CHORUS TEACHER OF THE YEAR Mr. Tommy Hewlett Mr. Tommy Hewlett has been chosen by the Student Council to be 1973's Teacher of the Year. Because of his concern for MPHS students, and his participation and involvement in MPHS activities, he is a logical choice. Through his classes in Problems of Democracy, Mr. Hewlett has involved many a stu- dent in the responsibility of citizenship. His many projects of school and community in- volvement have created an interest in students to better their school and town. Mr. Hew- lett also teaches speech, and has gained recognition for MPHS through his work with speech contests, the Debate Club, the High School Bowl Team, and Youth Congress delegates. In the field of extracurricular activity, Mr. Hewlett has been one of MPHS's strongest supporters. He has served well as sponsor and advisor of the Student Council, helping them to achieve the highest point of activity we've seen in many years. Mr. Hewlett has earned the respect of the community as well as students. He was chosen as Outstanding Educator for Moss Point, and is serving as Vice President of the Pas-Point Jaycees. There is no limit to Mr. Hewlett's devotion to Moss Point High School. At any MPHS function, Mr. Hewlett is one person who is sure to be around. Whether he is filling in as our Tiger mascot at football games, or very capably organizing a campaign for Youth Congress Speaker of the House, the student body of MPHS has come to depend on Mr. Hewlett. Most of all, however, he has gained our utmost respect. For these contributions to MPHS we honor Willie with selection to the Hall of Fame. 241 1973 CEO WLER DEDICA TION Mr. At Mrs. Doug Sullivan When we began considering the possibilities for dedication of the annual, we naturally tried to think of that person who had done the most not only for the annual, but for the entire school. We considered many people, and final- ly decided on something a little unusual for Moss Point High School. We chose not one person, but two. Looking back over this school year, you can't help but wonder how we could have managed without the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Sullivan. If you ever needed to know something about anything, at least one of these two would know. The list of their activities is endless. During Homecoming, they were one of the few who actually cared whether or not that Sopho- more or Junior float got finished. Then, the magazine sales. . . . . naturally, Mrs. Sullivan was in charge. Let's not forget the beauty pageant. Most people never thought to ask who designed and built the backdrop, or who print- ed the program, and in general, who managed the whole thingo Supposedly, it was the annual staff, but we know the credit should go to Mrs. Sullivan. To Mr. Sullivan, we owe a much improved Glee Club, that for the first time in many years received a very high rating at choral festival. This year, we also began hearing a lot about Madrigals, a totally new idea at Moss Point High School. All the credit for Madrigals should go to Mr. Sullivan, along with a great r a l big thank you. He has devoted many hours to a 4 7 r QM ' sometimes uncooperative, and maybe a little T T l lazy group, but we feel the time was well spento These talented young students have rep- resented MPHS in many places and before many influential people. We know this has had a very good effect on the reputation of Moss Point High School as a whole. As members of the annual staff, we know first hand of the time, worry, and work that Mrs. Sullivan has put into this annual. We also know very well what Mr. Sullivan has had to put up with because of this loyal devotion. The many days and nights of drawing off pages, counting votes and taking last minute pictures should not go unrewarded. Because of their participation, devotion, and concern, and because we love them both, we, the 1973 Growler Staff, would like to make this edition of the Growler, their Growler.
