BALL Coach RonakiRussun1 Under the guidance of Coach Ronald Russum the Moss Point Tigers completed one of their most successful sea- sons in recent years with a 14-10 won lost record against formidable South Big 8 opponents. Speed, poise, and determination characterized the cager's play opposite powerful teams throughout the 70-71 season. The Tiger backcourt proved to be an effective driving force with emphasis on shooting and ball handling. While on the front an ample amount of defensive play and re- bounding was displayed by two juniors, William Johnston and Richard Polk. Johnnie Nettles the only Freshman on the squad supplied the added backbone which made Moss Point the leading rebounding team in the Big 8 Conference. 81 Seniors; David Ambrose Mike Williams Hank Barnhart 82 The Moss Point B-Team pulled through to a 10-6 season with the aid of the two leading scorers, Willie Lee and Ernest Chaney averaging 9.7 and 9. 9 points a game respectively. David Robinson added the final touch with excellent ball handling and de- fensive precision. The weight of re- bounding was lead upon the able shoulders of A1 Brumfield and Anthony Joe who dominated both the offensive and defensive boards throughout the season. , um,mmw m w, This years Growler Staff would like to extend their cordial congratulations to David Ambrose on making the South All-Star Team and being all Big 8. The Tigers could manage only 3 wins in 11 games. These victories came over Picayune 12-11, Gulfport East 2-0, and most importantly, Pascagoula, 3-2. However, the Tigers were predominately scphomores and juniors and the ex- perience gained by them this year should show up favorably next season. Team members were: James Crowley, John Bell, Joe Smith, Monty Eaves, Kenny Pullen, Tommy Robertson, Mark White, David Pettis, Greg King, Danny Clark, Skippy Wieniewitz, John Webb, Russell Clark, and Ronnie Miller, Richard Browning, Woody Cowart, Jerome Gladney. In the running events, Montgomery paced the Tigers in the 120 yd. high hurd- les placing 2nd in the Big 8, South Miss. and State meets, and lst in the District and South Big 8 meets. He also set a school record 1. 47 seconds. Gibson took 3rd place honors in the district meet in the 180 yd. low hurdles. Lee and Heather- ton led the Tigers in the high jump and pole vault, respectively. Lee won lst place in the District and South Big 8 meets, 2nd in the Big 8 and South Miss, and 6th in the State meet.
