THE 1968 GROWLER T0 ' A VERA We, the annual staff, dedicate this annual to Mr. I.K . Avera in hopes that itwill serve as a means of expressing our continuing love for one who has gone on to life eternal. Mr. I.K. Avera is considered a symbol to students and faculty at Moss Point High School. He symbolizes the dedicated teacher by his tireless efforts as teacher for 35 years; he represents the valiant war hero, as a highly decorated soldier in World War I; he symbolizes the self sacrificing individual as he constantly gave of himself in his daily activities. Mr. Avera's industry was shown early. When Mossy Point was just a saw mill town Mr. Avera, at 14, rode logs down the river to their destination. He was graduated from Pine Level High School and then worked his way through Mississippi State University, where he was active in debating. He was awarded the Bachelor of Science Degree in mathematics. He had taught in several counties in Mississippi, including Greene, Perry, Jackson, and Stone. He was active in Boy Scouts at Perkinston High School. In each place he taught he stressed thoroughness. He also tried to impress students with the importance their school work has to future life.

During W o r 1d War I Mr. Avera was one of the first to go overseas and one Of the last to come back. Hav- ing traveled all over the world during the war, he has one of the most out- standing war records for bravery. In fact, he was one of the few people awarded by both France and America in World War 1. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. The former Pauline Phillips became Mrs . Avera in 192 9 and there are three Children. We thinkWilliam Shakespeare was describing Mr. Avera when he wrote His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world This Was A Man! And it is to this man we dedicate our annual. l4
