WE PROUDL Y DEDICA TE THE 1968 GROWLER T0 ' A VERA We, the annual staff, dedicate this annual to Mr. I.K . Avera in hopes that itwill serve as a means of expressing our continuing love for one who has gone on to life eternal. Mr. I.K. Avera is considered a symbol to students and faculty at Moss Point High School. He symbolizes the dedicated teacher by his tireless efforts as teacher for 35 years; he represents the valiant war hero, as a highly decorated soldier in World War I; he symbolizes the self sacrificing individual as he constantly gave of himself in his daily activities. Mr. Avera's industry was shown early. When Mossy Point was just a saw mill town Mr. Avera, at 14, rode logs down the river to their destination. He was graduated from Pine Level High School and then worked his way through Mississippi State University, where he was active in debating. He was awarded the Bachelor of Science Degree in mathematics. He had taught in several counties in Mississippi, including Greene, Perry, Jackson, and Stone. He was active in Boy Scouts at Perkinston High School. In each place he taught he stressed thoroughness. He also tried to impress students with the importance their school work has to future life. During W o r 1d War I Mr. Avera was one of the first to go overseas and one Of the last to come back. Hav- ing traveled all over the world during the war, he has one of the most out- standing war records for bravery. In fact, he was one of the few people awarded by both France and America in World War 1. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. The former Pauline Phillips became Mrs . Avera in 192 9 and there are three Children. We thinkWilliam Shakespeare was describing Mr. Avera when he wrote His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world This Was A Man! And it is to this man we dedicate our annual. l4 ADMINISTRA TION Superintendent Of Education Mr. M. J. Bullock HGreat men are they who see that spiritual is stronger than any materialforce; that thoughts rule the world. 16 Assistant Superintendent Claude L. Slauter Assistant Superintendent Ted Schliesser Principal MR. GENE STAUTER A ssistant Principal MR. GEORGE DALE u-i J! TEACHER OF THE YEAR MR. GEORGE DALE 20 The Student Council is very proud to announce that Mr. George Dale is Teacher of the Year for the 1967-68 school year. Mr. Dale has taught here for several years . Last year he became our assistant principal but because of his long hours of hard work and untiring interest in the students themselves, we believe he deserves this honor. Perhaps this is why he understands the students so thoroughly, having dealt with them in and out of the classroom. Mr. Dale gives his energies to academic pursuits, administrative duties and students' interests equally enthusiastically. He always has time for 21 students problem, no matter how busy he becomes. And for this giving of himself we salute him!! 21 GUIDANCE C0 UNSELOR STANDING: Miss Linda Sherrod SEATED: Mrs. Ruby Birdsall 22 MRS. ELSIE BEATTY B.A., Bowling Green College of Commerce Commerce MR. She was selected Most Sophisticated Senior and Most Polite in the Who's Who elections. Because of her lead- ership and scholarship ability, Jeanette well deserves the right to initiate this year's chapter of the Hall of Fame. Carol Cowart has proven herself to be a conscientious, dependable scholar in all phases of club and class work. As a member of the GROWLER editorial staff, she provided essential determination and skill for an executive position. The winner of two scholastic letters, Carol has done more than her share to earn the honor of membership to the 1968 Hall of Fame. Having served as cheerleader for the Tiger team for three years, vivacious Sharon Lanham displayed energetic spirit and enthusiastic support for her school. Her sincere efforts were rewarded her senior year as she was selected Homecoming Queen. The popular miss was elected to the Who's Who contest's highest honor. Miss MPHS. Her personality, spirit, and versatility give Sharon the deserving honor of membership to the Hall of Fame. 28 Guy Moore is certainly a qualified member of the 1968 Hall of Fame. The polite Student Body President has displayed able leadership in several activities. As a club and class officer, Boy's State repre- sentative, and aggressive athlete, Guy has shown great promise and desire. We salute Mr. MPHS for his outstanding achievements. Amelia Boo Turner represented her school and community im- pressively in two state-wide contests. As Moss Point's Junior Miss. Boo charmed officials and fellow contestants with her winning smile and personality. She was voted as Miss Congeniality. Previously. the Mississippi Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution named the lovely miss as first alternate for the state. At home, she displayed a warm friendship and willing- ness to work in various activities. The capable editor of the Tiger Flash has surely earned her position in the Hall of Fame. A sincere, hard-working student, David Wood has excelled in Church and school related activities with his ability to serve as well as to lead. He has performed expertly in student government and club activity and on the athletic field. The versatile scholar placed third in the State Track Meet his Junior year in the 880-yard run. As re- cipient of the Scholarship-Leadership-Sportmanship Award. the likeable senior typifies well the qualities of a Hall of Fame winner. 29 CALVIN LAVERNE ADKINSON I am not two faced; because if I were I would certainly be wearing the other one.
