Football Darxng, powerful, and with the w1ll to win, the Jr en Clad Eleven of the Moshannon Joint footnall team had one of its most successful seasons the year of '54 The hearty nen under the good coaching of Lamont Clo e and Frank Kltko, played a total of 10 rames 4 t 1 lo s of only 2 ganes the entire season Their two losses were the ev r powerful State College vs Voshan nan Join game and the mlvhty team of Bellwood Antls Under the arc livhts at State College, we opened our football sea on and met our first defeat Althouv the pivskin continued to bounce into the hands of our opponents, hard plunging, quarter back McCoy, and full back Kitko were able to each glory land twice making the score 19-12 The State College Dame marked our number one defeat, but it didn't quench the lnexhaustable energy of the Close men Their next encounter was Bellwood An is and here again the f1ght1ng team play d a food game Bellwood, Gaining very little on the ground, was able to turn the tables on us by running and intercepting making the loss a 33 O in favor of Bellwood It was after the Bellwood Antls game that the spirited Raider ll began th season that was to set a new all time record at Moshannon Joint Victory number one came about at the Roaring Spring game It was a nip and tuck game in the first two quarters but as the same progressed, the fighting green was abl to tally the score with end John Rerko along with Pete Webb stopping the opponent's thrusts time and time again Fullback Jim Kitko scored two touchdowns making the wln over Roarlnv Spring l3 6 In the fourth game of the season, Moshannon Joint played host to Gallitzen in an afternoon contest at Madera, our fi st home game Once again we were vlctorlous with a score of 25 O Webb, making the first touchdown, was the game's ble scorer as he caught a pair of passes xhlle Joe Syktlch, along with Kltko Next the Green Raiders traveled to Howard where t ey undertook Bald Eagle This was an easy victory and we won 38-19 After this the fighting Close men played Osceola and here they chalked up another vxctory of 14 O in the first half of the game Due to the fact that Osceola failed to return to the grid iron for the second half, the vane was forfeited to us Touchdowns scored by fast movlng Kohan and Kitko Extra poln s by Kitko and J Lloyd The power packed Raiders exploded their energy on Cooper Twp as they again proved their strength by trampling Cooper 52 6 Kltko scored 2 touchdowns, McCoy two, and John Lloyd one Extra Points made by Kohan and McCoy Striking like lightening our mighty Moshannon men won one of the most thrilling games of the season On a cold, frosty nlvht, they were able to outwit the Golden Tide of Curwensville for the first tina 17 years, with a score of 12 0 This was certainly a grand Game as the lineman and backfleld played thelr best One of the finest features of the contest was a desperation tackle made by injured center, Clair KTeabagsJ Lockett which proved to be the turning point of the game as the Tide back was touchdown bound The dazzling play of our backf1e1d led by McCoy and Kohan coupled with the hand bruslnv tackle of our defensive team led by seniors, Rerko, Syktlch, Rickard, Webb, and underclassmen Hamm, Rodkey, Reese and Mlhalko spelled the difference in our greatest vlctory of '54 After this history making game, Moshannon Jolnt encountered Williamsburg, With Webb and Melvin Kerr intercepting passes, Kltko, B Romanchick and McCoy reaching pay dirt and WcCoy's pass to Syktich for an extra point we were able to stampede Williamsburg 26-7 To end up a wonderful season for '54, the victorious Raiders met HW B , their arch rivals, under the lights at Houtzdale This was another game to go on the victory side of the Raiders record With Kohan dashing 65 yards to the H W B 21, Kitko was later able to score on a four yard run He also scored three more touchdowns during the game A McCoy to Syktich was also good for a touchdown and McCoy's try for an extra point was able to split the uprighte It was with these plays that we whitewashed H W B to the tune of 32 0 Due to the fine playing of our unconquerable linemen and hard hitting backfleld, Moshannon Joint won its eighth straight game and the Championship of the Moshannon Valley league for 1954 Not only dix we win the Mosbannon Valley Championship, but also the M V scoring cnamplonship was taken byx Jim Kltdo Along with all this, we were placed fourth in the Western Conference The football team of '54 will long remain in our memories as it showed such wonderful co-operaflln and that never give up spirit that was a sight to behold M V L SCORINQ CHAMPION Honom McCoy CQBD and Webb KREQ First Team All County McCoy fQBJ, Webb KREJ, Rerko KRGI, Hamm fCTJ, Kitkb KFBI First Team Moshannon Valley Kohan KHBI and Rickard QLGD Second Team-Moshannon Valley Syktich UEJ, Lockett CCD, Lloyd KHBJ, Rodkey CRTJ Honorable Mention CURING Jim Kitko S points Moshannon Valley SCOTUS Champion, Geo.
