Ralston Thomas after thirty-four years of service to Moses Brown School brings to a close the longest administration in the Schools history. All those connected with the School deeply regret his leaving for Mr. Thomas has been one of the most outstanding and most popular headmasters in Moses Brown School s history. Besides being a very capable educational administrator, he has been a living example of a distinguished and friend- ly gentleman for all boys who have been privileged to attend Moses Brown School in the last thirty-four years. The spiritual, physical, mental, and social development of the youth under his guidance will always be a tribute to him. L. Ralston Thomas matriculated at Haverford College in the fall of 1909, achieving there a very enviable record. l 1 7 Q Mr. Thomas Circa 1922 In his freshman year in addition to the academic work, he was a track star, won his numeral in track, soccer, and cricket, and was a member of the class football team. He received the Congdon Prize Ball for the Best Freshman Bowler and toured England with the cricket team. As a sophomore he won his letter in track, was on the College Relay Team, captained the class track team, and played football and soccer. In his junior and senior years he was a letterman in football, soccer, and track, captained the track and soccer teams, and was a member of the class gym team. In addition to his sports and other extracurricu- lar activities, Mr. Thomas held the offices of class treasurer, secretary, and president during his years at Haverford. After his graduation from Haverford in 1913, Mr. Thomas returned to his own preparatory school, Westtown School, Westtown, Pennsylvania. There he served as science teacher and physical director for four years. In the spring of 1917 he had planned to come to Moses Brown School, but America's entrance into World War I delayed his coming. As a volunteer relief worker for the American Friends Service Committee, he completed two years' serv- ice in France. Then from 1919-1922 he was a member of the Moses Brown faculty as teacher of chemistry and physics, physical director, and track coach. After teaching three years at Moses Brown, he was appointed principal of Friends' Central School in Philadelphia, where he remained for two years before succeeding Dr. Gifford as headmaster of Moses Brown School in 1924. He received his master of education degree at Harvard in 1925. During the administration of Mr. Thomas many changes have been made. Probably the most important change occurred in 1925 when the New England Yearly Meeting of Friends acquired Lincoln School, and Moses Brown be- came exclusively a boys' school in 1926. This transforma- tion was not an easy one, but it was accomplished in a manner highly satisfactory to everyone. Concerning the change Frances E. Wheeler, Headmistress Fmerita of Lincoln School, said, The emigration of the girls from Moses Brown School to Lincoln School presented various problems. For their solution we relied constantly on the unfailing courtesy, wise council and continual interest of Ralston Thomas. Mfr. L. Ralrzon Tbomm 7 Under the personal supervision of the mission, the work extended over a wide area and benefitted thousands. It consisted in providing food for a sup- plementary meal every day to five thousand ap- prentices and medical students, and to 5,000 children in each of two areas in thecountry. In addition, clothing was distributed to appren- tices, teachers, and students, especially to refugee students. Substantial distributions of food and cloth- ing were also made to institutions, chiefly for chil- dren and old people. Altogether, hundreds of tons of food and clothing, all supplied by the Friends Serv- ice Committee, were distributed by the mission. During the last six months of his work, Mr. Thomas was also chairman of the Council of Foreign Relief Agencies, which met bi-weekly to discuss problems of relief and establish understanding with governmental offices. On July 2, 1947, when Mr. and Mrs. Thomas completed their work, they were decorated by the Hungarian government. The Prime Minister con- ferred upon Mr. Thomas a Cross of the Order of Merit with a citation. Mrs. Thomas, who gave much personal assistance to individuals, was awarded the Golden Cross of the Order. Mr. Thomas has persistently strived to keep him- self and the entire staff of Moses Brown abreast of the times. Through his own membership in pro- fessional groups and his encouragement of teachers to do advanced study, visit schools, and join profes- Views of the Thomas home on the Cape , .. , Mr. and IVIH. Thomas in their living room at Ylforer Brown Furthermore, Mr. Thomas began a program of gradual changes to make the best and fullest possible use of the school properties for the boys. Tennis courts, three new playing fields, an attractive Lower School gymnasium, a music room, a modern infirmary, and many houses for married masters were only a small part of the program. In 1946 Mr. and Mrs. Thomas again heeded the call of the American Friends Service Committee and took a year's leave of absence from Moses Brown to head a mission of relief work in Hungary. sional associations, the School has maintained its high academic standing. Mr. Thomas' active part in such local organizations as the Barnard Club, the R. I. Secondary School Principals' Association, the Inde- pendent Schools Association of R. I., of which he was an organizer and hrst president, and the R. I. Society for Mental Hygiene has identified the School closely with the educational affairs of city and state, as his work with the Quaker Headmasters and Head- masters Association has given it prominence out- side the state. In recognition of these services he was elected president of several of these groups, granted an honorary Sc. D. by the R. I. College of Pharmacy and Allied Sciences, and in 1935 was made a life trustee of Brown University. Mr. Thomas' contributions to Moses Brown School are immeasurable. The feeling that many of us have concerning him was expressed by E. Gardner Jacobs, Vice-President of Bryant College, when he said, I have enjoyed his outlook on many matters, particu- larly his sympathetic and sincere interest in young people, their aims and ambitions. It is a great satis- faction to me as an alumnus to have him so highly regarded in civic and communal affairs as well as in educational circles. His wide scope of interests adds luster to Moses Brown and broadens the horizon of the young men who are privileged to study under the guidance of Dr. L. Ralston Thomas. Mike brought with him a very essential piece of equipment which has continually proved to be quite an asset, a little black book. He also brought the drive for scholastic honors and positions on both the varsity basketball and varsity baseball teams. Mike, never forget your black book. Yes, even Adam had 'em! Q X l s ' , . .. . Hindley, Editor-in-Chief - Mr. Arthur W. Cate, Faculty Advisor Under the excellent guidance of Mr. Cate and Anthony Hindley, Editor-in-Chief, The Delploian, our literary magazine, successfully began its fifty-'third year of publication. Many more sports pictures were added this year and undoubtedly created a bigger interest. At the same time The Delpbian increased its literary capacity by adding a longer list of stu- dent themes. Associate editors Behrendt, Benjamin, Merchant, and Sherman wrote editorials, while Hollman, as Historian, con- tributed two excellent articles on johnny Fletcher, and Mr. Whitford. Wetherald added to the magazine with some ex- cellent sports drawings. Leand and Dwares, business manag- ers, provided finances by securing advertisements. Dick Cur- tis, Exchange Editor, worked diligently and received maga- zines and newspapers from a great many schools in this coun- try and even from England. Walter, Silva contributed some fine sports pictures and Buonanno handled the magazine cir- culation. The Board could never have put out The Delpbimz with- out Mr. Cate. We wish to thank him for his help throughout the year. 67 4.5 EBSQ? 221' QU' 1 ff' f 1 D R H k , R. W. C ' , R. B. W lls, Mr. Her- rence, jr., J. P. Satterthwait, E. Cohen. rlhghv faculty adrfiiiir? C., consisting of all class officers and an additional representative from the Fifth Form, conducts the Red Cross and Good Will Fund campaigns and allots to vari- ous charitable organizations the money contributed to the Good Will Fund. The group also acts in an advisory capacity in all phases of student life. It usually meets in Mr. Thomas' apartment and, with the Headmaster and Mr. Herman, discusses school prob- lems. The Snack Bar, operated by the S. A. C. and now in its third year, has become a definite part of the school life. This year it has increased its stock so that there are now many choices of candy bars, pastry, and drinks. Although the members of the Snack Bar Committee are not all members of the S. A. C., the latter organization still sponsors and takes charge of the venture. 68 Volume 5 . I., june 14, 1955 Special M.B. NEWS COMPLETES THIRD YEAR The Moses Brown News, the weekly publication of the students of Moses Brown School, has just completed its third year of operation. The retiring staff is: Douglas M. Behrendt, Editor-in-Chief, Bernard V. Buonanno, Jr., Thomas L. Benjamin, john J. Vallone, jr., Editorsg and Frederick N. Levinger, Business Manager. Since its inception in 1951, when it elected John Dowl- ing its first Editor-in-Chief, the M.B. News has served an important function in helping to further school spirit by providing up-to-date accounts of all the School's activities and by presenting an accurate calendar of coming events. In addition to the editors the staff comprises some twen- ty reporters who, each week, are assigned coverage of that week's events. On Sunday afternoons the articles are edited by the editor of the week, who then turns in the com- pleted paper to Mr. Armstrong, the faculty advisor. The paper is typed in the office Monday morning and that noon it is mimeographed and distributed by the business staff. Staff Meeting in Room 1 Mr. Armstrong and Ed Behrendt Certificates are awarded at the end of the year to the editors, the mimeograph- ers, and to those reporters who have reg- ularly attended meetings and written several articles. McLeod, President Charles Wilson, Secretary Mr. Charles Hutton, Faculty Advisor Under the guiding hand of Mr. Charles Hutton, the Science .Club has accomplished a variety of subjects during the fall and winter seasons of school. Last fall we had Mr. Bruce Williamson from radio station WHIM over to enlighten us on the possibilities of becoming an announcer or newscaster over the air. This winter the club members have made a study of radio and television transmission. Through the co- operation of the Providence journal Company, we were able to visit the WEAN radio transmitter to see the actual equipment required to put a radio program on the airwaves. After radio, our next objective was to find out how its competitor television was operat- ed. We received permission to inspect WJAR-TV's transmitter in Rehoboth, and proceeded to compare the two mediums. Gut conclusion was that except for the more intricate outlay of equipment required to put television on the air, they were basically the same in transmission. Although field trips have been the main attrac- tion of the Club, the members have also given a variety of speeches during the weekly club meetings. The talks have varied from the explanation of elec- tron tubes to the applications of the oil seal. All agree that the club has been very informative through the trips and talks, and that more people should try to get more from science. Row 1: Mr. Roberts, faculty advisory S. B. Goldberg, R. W. Tothy, Preridemf Walter J. Silva, Vice-Prerident Richard W. Curtis, Secretary-Treasurer Stanley B. Goldberg, Darkroom Chairman Mr. Frank E. Fuller, Faculty Aciviior Several weeks after the opening of school, the Moses Brown Camera Club held its first meeting and elected officers to represent the Club. Mr. Fuller re- tained his position as club supervisor and was assisted by Mr. Roberts. The Club was functioning once again. The club's pecuniary resources, which had been enlarged by a recent collection of dues, was partially invested in supplies for the darkroom. A substantial amount was also set aside for the awarding of prizes in the spring photo contest. Meanwhile, the oflicers were planning a schedule of programs which would prove interesting and instructive to the club mem- bers. Several students entertained the club with a show- ing of colored slides. However, the highlight of the club program was a visit to the Brown photo labora- tory. Here the club members were shown the various techniques of printing, developing, coloring, and en- larging. Not only has the Camera Club given its members a greater knowledge of the photographic art, but it has also served as a meeting place where students of all forms may learn to work together and profit from the many advantages which the club has to offer. fm 1 x' , 1,-,Alt ,g 2.4, fp, .,.. 1 .Sl .
