Md1f6If1dIf6 It was our prrvate oprnlon that srngrng once a day was too much and Madames plan was not a great success The 1nk srtuatxon however, ecllpsed all other events of that year All of us were anmous to use th1s strange new stuff that dndn t erase, and we were very happy when If was hrst drshed out to us How ever, most of the class regretted more than once the fact that only sandpaper took mk off the floor The class was much larger and there was more devlltry rn the arr, and If rs my OPIHIOH that we drstracted poor M1ss Anderson so that she didn t reallze what she was dorng and accepted an offer of marriage Almost before we knew If we vtere full fledged thrrd gr1ders,pract1cally ready for the mtermedrates and were we proud' Most of our tnme that year was spent add mg to our knowledge of Enghsh arlthmetrc French, etc but we also had t1me for a few dnversrons Chlef of these was a young fellow named Alvrn enks He reg ularly came to school late and just as regularly he wore an army unlform He was qurte a picture as he clanked rnto the room 1n hrs blg boots There was also a broad enrng or perhaps lengthenlng of our exerc1se at recess Instead of merely crrclmg the horse chestnut tree we now ran all the way around the tenms courts I often wonder where the thrrd graders run today, for both of these landmarks have srnce dlsappeared Along towards Chrlstmas M1ss Crawford, our teacher fell and broke her wrrst on the corner of her desk I am sure that th1s xncrdent wrll rema1n always rndelrbly prrnted rn the mnnds of those who were present In the sprrng some mem bers of the class who were lucky enough to get therr work done early were allowed to cmrve prctures of boats on preces of wood These boats were then parnted IH beau work IS the contest between the two sectnons of the class to see whrch rested best at rest t1me Thxs contest was one of the few thmgs that have been put over on our class It actually made us try to rest but we drdnt realrze rt As a matter of fact, we almost rested the year away we were so eager to rest well, and nn no tlme we left school for summer vacatron already qulte learned Returnlng to school after a dellghtful rest from the darly routme of school actrv IIICS we found ourselves no longer prlmarres but rntermedrates Our pedagogue thrs year was M1ss Straw, a tall graceful mdrvrdual whom me had admrred at a d1s tance ln our younger years It was her parnful task novx to grve us a helplng hand on our way to hrgher learmng Possrbly our best memory of her IS that of her favorrte trrck of usmg her glasses as mrrrors to keep tabs on her unruly charges whxle she was wrmng on the blackboards Sharp lrttle Mlss Sawyer was a nevs member of our rapndly rncreasmg number of tclchers Well do we remember the frequent and enjoyable blrd walks on sunny sprlng days Her duty as well as her ambltlon was to explam to us the bafflmg secrets of nature Our good frlend Mrss Buffum,th1s year In connectron wrth a mrld course rn elementary ancient hrstory kept us busy drawmg prctures of Egyptlan and Phtfnrcran war and commercral vessels and Roman galleys Those gaxly colored Ozzeerz Mmj J strll haunt us To our number th1s year were added such personalltles as Bob Glll Alan Moses, MOSAIC 19 1 A 0 , ' a ' 1 1 L I n ' I D V - I I f ' k 9 5 4 Tw I 9 I I ' ' 9 tiful shades of blue, yellow, and red.
