Joannie - what do you mean What am I doing in the office? Only Joannie Brown would want to know this. Or, how about That doesn't look like your mother's signature to me! As our principal's secretary for 8 years, Joannie has been very dedicated to the students at Morton Public School. From selling pencils and cough drops to healing our bumps and scratches, she has always been there when we needed her. In spite of, or maybe because of her sincere scoldings she has taught us the meaning of respect. For this and so much more, we dedicate this, our 1981-82 Tomahawk to you. Thanks, Joannie, for being you!!! 1. ''Tim, What did you volunteer us for this time? 2. She moved me for the third time! 3. Nothing to it guys, that basket's just a drop in the bucket. 4. Good stuff, Maynard 5. Morton's spirit week at it's peak. 6. Eat your heart out Loretta Lynn! 4 1. No, Jeanne, this time the gossip's not about you. 2. Girls, have I got an idea for you! 3. Kool the Gang 3 Jump Rope For Heart And Canby Day Near the end of the school year volun- teers participated in the Jump Rope For Heart Program. They received certifi- cates of Achievement and t-shirts for their accomplishments. About the same time that this occurred several students went to Canby Area Vocation- al Day. They took tests in business, typ- ing, calculus, and English. Beth Frank and Jeanne Deinken both received awards. Us At Work And Play 7 Us At Our Best . . . 8 . . . Even Better Student Council Trip Despite the rainy weather, the Student Council managed to have a good time on their trip. They arrived at the Min- nesota Science Museum in Minneapo- lis and observed fossils, a mummy and much more ancient history before the start of the shows at the Omni Theater. Nomads of the Deep and Silent Sky were the two shows they saw. Then a trip to Como Park was cancelled because of the rain, and instead the group enjoyed some time at Ridgedale. The highlight of the day was a baseball game at the Hubert Humphrey Metro- dome. The Minnesota Twins played the Boston Red Sox at 7:30 p.m. The trip was a lot of fun and seeing the dome for the first time was exciting. Well, where should we go this year? 10 Memories Two long standing traditions were given a farewell by Mortonites this year. On December 19, 1981 the Vikings played the last game at Metropolitan Stadium. The fans went wild tearing down goal posts, taking seats and sod. The Twins and Vikings will now play at the new Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. On March 2, 1981, the Morton boys basketball team played the last basketball game at the Morton gym. Although the fans didn't get quite so wild, it was an event we will all remember. Over the years there have been both moments of wild excitement and great disappointment. The heartbreaking losses have been more then compensated by the thrill of victory. Many suburb coaches and athletes have spent many an hour using their talents in our gym. But though varsity basketball may be gone, the good times and the fondest memories will never die, but remain with us forever. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIESl How Much How Many small fries movie ....... This year's coronation was held on a Monday night in order to let the queen reign over Spirit Week. Amy Lussenhop was crowned our new queen. After the coronation there was a pep rally and bon-fire to pump everyone up for Spirit Week. Friday came with beautiful weather. After the parade, the annual Powder Puff game was held, ending in a tie. Friday night, under the lights, the excitement was building as the Indians charged on the field. As the final gun sounded, the Morton-Franklin Indians came out on top, 27-6! The finishing touch was the dance Saturday night. What a perfect ending for a great week! Up, Up, And Away The Morton elementary students participated in the Weekly Reader's Balloon Contest, which was a nationwide activity. The students that were involved let their balloons go from behind the school on March 23, 1982; which is the day the contest began. The first student that received a reply was Wendy Pearson, who's balloon was found the same day 112 miles away, in West St. Paul. The winners of the contest received prizes for the balloon that traveled the farthest by May 1, 1982. 17 Sweetheart Ball 1982 Ric Lothert, Kathy Lothert, Brian Pendleton, Amy Bethke, John Tate, Cassie Cherry, Greg Hennen, Mary Tisdell, Shawn Frank, Queen Billi Flamme, Kelly Haskell, Tony Lussenhop, Lynn Greenslit, Jim Hennen, Amy Schweinfurter, Dan Brazil, Julie Serbus, Scott Greenslit. The 1982 Sweetheart Ball was a huge success. The FHA put a lot of time and effort, which was well worth it, into the coronation. A spe- cial thanks goes to Mrs. Roble, our advisor, for all her help. The coro- nation was followed by a dance with music by Slyder. We are very proud to say our 1982 Sweetheart Queen is Billi Flamme, our foreign exchange student from Germany. Sibylle Flamme, (or Billi) said when she arrived from Isernhagen, West Germany, to her new home at the Richard Haskell family. Billi, as a junior in Morton, was enthusiastic at the idea of having sports during school. She was in Volleyball, and Basketball. She was also active in FHA, and Pep Club. Later in the year she attended Project 120, which is a week long seminar, learning about Minnesota's government. It was held at the Capitol building in St. Paul. Billi was here as a student experiencing Minnesota's way of life, but the roles were reversed and she became the teacher and we became the students. ABOVE: Tony can't believe it and it really BOTHERS Shawn! Billi says, I miss you Minnesota. Billi with her American sisters, Kelly and Karyl. 22 Football The Morton-Franklin Indians won the Mini Conference Nine-Man football championship. This was the first year of a cooperatively sponsored team by the Morton and Franklin Schools. The Indians finished the regular season with a 9-0 record. The Indians then lost a qualifying game to Winsted Holy Trinity of the Circle Eight Confer- ence by a score of 32-14. The Indians, under first year head coach Tom Jacobson, had a fine balance of passing and running. Junior quarterback Brian Pendleton led the passing attack which gained 1,262 yards. The Indians complet- ed 102 of 201 passes (50.7%) and averaged 126.2 yards per game passing. Neal Prahl with 31 and Ric Lothert with 26 were the leading receivers. The M-F Indians rushing attack gained 100.7 yards per game. The leading rusher was Greg Hennen with 663 yards for an average of 4.3. Hennen also led the scoring with ten touchdowns. The M-F offense averaged 22.4 points per game. The M-F defense was anchored by Nine-Man all-stater, Kevin Balsley. Balsley totaled 143 tackles including eight sacks. Balsley also knocked down five passes. The defense gave up 11.2 points per game, but came up with shutouts over the second and third place teams in the conference. The Indians had 19 interceptions and 11 fumble recov- eries. Because of injuries, lack of height and inconsistency, the season was frustrat- ing. The girls lost many games by one and two points, which were heart- breaking, but they always came back with more determination and spirit. By the time tournaments came the girls were ready to win and they proved it with an upset to Belview in the first round. They played an aggressive game against Wabasso in the second round of the tournament but fell short of a victo- ry. What they may have lacked in ex- perience was more than made up for in enthusiasm. Although the season record would say that, It was a re- building year, the team played some great points. Such skills as catching fly balls, perfecting bunts, and running the bases, were all part of field- ing a competitive team. The team will miss the leadership of the seniors, but the returning team members will be tough competitors. Headed by Mrs. Roble, the F.H.A. becomes involved in many school activities. Their most important activity is the Sweetheart Ball. They also serve lunch to the teachers at conferences. At the end of the year the girls are honored at a banquet where they receive awards for out- standing participation. The installation ceremony of new officers is also held that night. It is a special night for everyone involved. Can you tell whose hands are younger looking? Indianettes The Indianettes were not only busy during the school year, but also during the summer of '81. They sold food at auctions to raise money. They put the money to good use by having Mrs. Elaine Schweinfurter make new uni- forms.
