It was the year of the “Urban Cowboy” and everyone was getting into the act — even Morton. We donned boots and cowboy hats for “Country Western Day” during Spirit Week, used the country western theme “Look- ing For Love” during prom, and got to see the movies “Trinity Is Still My Name” at Christ- mas and “Urban Cowboy” during prom. In an effort to catch the country fever, our 1981 annu- al uses a country theme based upon our favorite country songs done by various artists — Oak Ridge Boys, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, etc. Go ahead, turn the page and let our “Country Roads” take you back to yes- terday once more. Homecoming Activities Homecoming 1980 was an event to re- member. The school was filled with spirit signs and contests designed to fire every one up. Coronation was held on Thursday night with Lorri Daun being crowned as 1980 Homecoming Queen. After corona- tion everyone was invited to attend the traditional bonfire behind the school. Fri- day was a wet, rainy day but the parade went on as scheduled. Dedicated girls played in the powder puff football game with the Senior-Freshmen team beating the Junior-Sophomore team. Friday night as the clouds cleared the Morton Football Team got ready for a tough game against Balaton. It took four overtimes but the Indians finally came through with a 34-28 Homecoming win. The dance was held on Saturday night with everyone having something to celebrate after Friday’s great victory. 13 Can I Have This Dance FRONT ROW: Amy Bethke, Mary Tisdell, Reigning Queen Beth Frank, Queen Kathy Lothert, Amy Lussenhop, Cathy Reitter. Crownbearers Galen Serbus and Mia Prescott. Lookin’ For Love In spite of the rainy weather and late arrival of the band, “Zoro”, the 1981 Junior-Senior Prom turned out to be a night to remember. The evening began with a banquet held at the Sheep Shedde in Olivia, with Mr. Duane Christenson featured as the guest speaker. The Grand March and dance followed the banquet, and then everyone headed up to Red- wood for the movie “Urban Cow- boy”, picked by the juniors in keep- ing with their country-western theme, “Lookin’ for Love.” The breakfast served by the junior moth- ers at the Morton Legion provided an ending for a close-to-perfect even- ing. ib Prom 1. MISSING: Ric Deinken Under the direction of Kathy O’Connor Mor- ton again put on two plays this year. The first, “Shut and Bar the Door”, was a one act play given for the district competition in January. The second, “Who Dunit?”, was a three-act play given as a major part of Fun Night. The success of this play helped add to the overall success of Fun Night. The stu- dent council headed Fun Night in order to promote community involvement in the school. A chili supper was held followed by acts performed by the Indianettes, Birch Coulee 4-H Club, Student Council, and a solo by Joe Ruhland as well as the play. Hopeful- ly the success of Fun Night this year will help to make it an annual event and increase involvement in the school by the parents and involvement in other activities by the stu- dents. We tripled the participants from three last year to nine this year. At sub- district competition nine girls gave it their best shot for Mor- ton. These nine girls were Su- san Kersten, Margaret Brock- way, Julie Cornwell, Jeanne Deinken, Kelly Haskell, Karyl Haskell, Kris Simning, Kelly Cherry, and Paula Wittgraf. Ju- lie Cornwell and Jeanne Dein- ken received alternate placings at sub-district competition and Susan Kersten, Kelly Haskell, and Kelly Cherry went on to compete at district level. All in all, 1981 turned out to be a good year for Morton in declam com- petition. 19 Lyceums During the 1980-81 school year the Morton stu- dents were entertained by four assembly programs sponsored by Dakota Assemblies, Inc. from North Dakota. During the fall there was a juggling exhi- bition and a frisbee performance. Later in the year two especially unique magic and reptile presenta- tions were given. One other assembly held during the year was a performance by a Dakota Dance group. The students gained from their participa- tion in these excellent learning experiences. 1. The 1979 Morton football team was made up of extremely talented individuals who gave Morton fans much to cheer about on their way to third in the state playoffs, but we can take just as much pride in the accomplishments of our 1980 team. At the beginning of a fall conditioning practice there were obvious questions to be answered and gaping holes to be tilled. Coaches Engler and Jacobson did a super job fitting people with positions and led Morton during their 7-2 season, including a four overtime Homecoming victory on October 3. Every member of the team deserves a pat on the back for a job well done, but Dave Bidinger deserves extra recognition for being named to the Minneapolis Tribune All-State team, nine- man all-state team, and KNUJ Defensive Player of the Year. 35 M-Club FRONT ROW: Patty Angermeyr - Treasurer, Charlotte Bethke President. Should it best be described as was, might- have-been, or never was? Probably the best way to describe it is to divide it into “before” and “after.” The before season (meaning be- fore suspension took half of the members) was a 5-9 team showing improvement and promise for districts. The after team was sev- en gutsy guys hanging in there to finish off the final five games. This was a “year to remember” maybe not for victories and championships won, but for the character these young men showed and the lessons that had to be learned. David Bidinger also reached the coveted pla- teau of 1,000 career points midway through the season. Any Which Way You Can The 1980-81 girls basket- ball team got out of the starting blocks quick by winning seven straight games after an opening night loss to Redwood Falls. However, the sec- ond half of the season was a little rockier. The com- bination of bad luck, in- consistency, suspensions, and no dominating big person led to four games lost by three points or less, including a season ending overtime loss to Walnut Grove. The girls seemed to be battling up- hill all season long. If vic- tories were awarded to the gutsiest squad this team would have definitely im- proved upon their 9-10 re- cord. The early season was plaqued by rainouts and later on the season was marked by having as many as five games in a week. Optimism was high by districts but Mor- ton was eliminated in the first round by Springfield who jumped into an early 4-0 lead which they refused to relin- quish. The recipients of the baseball awards went to all un- derclassmen - Greg Hennen, Brian Pendleton, and Tim Swo- boda which hopefully is a good sign for the upcoming season. The team performing this spring in near total ano- nymity was the boys track team. Neither the par- ticipants or the supporters showed up on a consis- tent pattern. One athlete did however have an excellent season. Rick Lothert did well in the con- ference meets and the district meet. Rick ad- vanced through districts to regions in both the 110 meter high hurdles and the 300 meter intermedi- ate hurdles. Rick still has his senior season to add to his accomplishments. 46 Girls’ Track FRONT ROW: Kelly Cherry, Kris Simning, Darcee Dehncke, Sheri Martin, Laurie Goblirsch. The girls track team this year did not have the success they have had in prior seasons. No athlete advanced past the district level which is a rarity for one of our track teams. However, several younger runners showed promise and made tremendous progress this year. Morton will miss the talent of graduat- ing seniors Patty Angermeyr, Laurie Caven and Darcee Dehncke next season. They have all received numerous awards for their ac- complishments. 47 Tennis 48 LEFT TO RIGHT: Patty Lussenhop, Jakob Victorin, Peter Brown, Scott Greenslit, Dan Brazil, Nate Hjulberg, Mrs. Bonnie Scheitel - Coach, Shawn Frank, Ann MacHolda. ‘The Swede and Nate - You’re Great! Slogans such as this lined the Morton store windows during the first week of June because two Morton tennis players, Nathan Hjulberg and Jakob Victorin, had made it to the state tourney. Jakob and Nathan had placed 1-2 respectively in the regionals to put them into state singles competition which was rather easily won by Jakob. This was the first year of interscholastic tennis for Morton so it was even more of a unique experience to also produce the Class A champion. Thanks to the hard work of Coach Scheitel and the entire team, the support of the school, and Jakob’s talent Morton can be proud to be the home of a state champ. This year the freshman class sponsored a band for the senior farewell dance. They worked hard to raise the money. All of their work paid off as the dance was a success. In December the fresh- men got together and had a bowling party in Olivia. They like to get togeth- er and have fun. 64 Talk about standing around and looking silly! Tenth Grade n a Ouch!! Cathy and Linda pull hard, but Jill and Anne don’t seem to mind. The sophomore class of ’83 was involved in many school activities. They are active in sports and many are members of various or- ganizations. The sophomores organized the queen’s float for homecoming. They also shared with the freshmen sponsoring the senior farewell. We had a car wash the day of the prom. It has been a fun-filled and excit- ing year for the sophomores and we look for- ward to our junior year. They were foreign ex- change students Susan Kersten from Ger- many and Jakob Victorin from Sweden. We received many rewards from both Su- san and Jakob. We greatly appreciate the Jerry Greenslit and Gary Cornwell fam- ilies for giving them care and concern which gave us the opportunity to grow because of their friendship. Hopefully Ja- kob and Susan benefited as much from their experiences in our community as we benefited from their gift of themselves. Patricia Jo Angermeyr Charlotte Ann Bethke The Important Thing Is. Graduation 1981 82 Funny How Time 83 The class of 1981 was a very special and unique group of in- dividuals. With only nineteen members, this class often found it difficult to initiate and com- plete their class responsibil- ities, but in the end they were usually able to carry through with flying colors. Graduation was no exception. For the first time ever in Morton the senior class completely prepared and presented their own graduation ceremonies. Following a wel- come by Mr. Nytes the students took over. Richard Deinken gave the invocation, Charlotte Bethke gave the valedictory ad- dress, and Laurie Caven and Joe Ruhland gave the com- mencement address. The senior class then sang “Memories” which was proceeded by the presentation of diplomas and the benediction by Richard Deinken. The grandeur of 1981 was an appropriate way to cap off the success of high school, but now its time to add their fresh vital- ity to another part of their lives and make that successful too. . . .
