We will always remember his unique laugh and his knack for spreading a smile around the classroom. Kevin’s memory means some- thing special and different to us all, but we all agree Kevin helped us to laugh and to understand life better. Perhaps this was his purpose - to teach us to truly appreciate the precious gift of life. Let There Be Lights For years there has been much interest from the community for a lighted athletic field. Finally the dream came true when serious planning began in the spring of 1979. The Morton City Council with the Morton School Board formed the Joint Powers Commission. The total funding, over $25,000, was provided equally by the City of Morton and the school board. Chris Lussenhop, a member of the Class of 1979. completed the blueprint in May. Superintendent Lowell Schwalbe deserves much of the credit for this project His determination, support, and continued efforts were invaluable. Credit must also be given to the Morton Lions and Jaycees who helped install the lights and to Valley Electric and Simmons Electric for their contribution and efforts. The lights were in and operating for the first home football game on August 31. 1979 A dedication ceremony in honor of Bill Rebstock completed this long awaited and much appreciated project. i The Spice Of Life Aea V ei|M MO Another Typical Day Up, Up, And Away May of 1980 proved to be an exciting time for the elementary students. One fun event they participated in was a balloon contest sponsored by Weekly Reader magazine. The purpose of the balloon race was to hopefully begin a pen pal exchange. Each student wrote their name, address and personal information on a card that was attached to the balloon. Many children received replies, but the farthest reported correspondence came from a child in Wisconsin to J.J. Goodthunder. The Pleasure Of Revenge The day of May 16, 1980 brought an opportunity for the senior boys to “give it” to Mr. Nytes. As you can see, they succeeded. The fact that this day. May 16, was his birthday made the temptation too great to resist. 6 A€IIVIIIE§ Homecoming 1979 Rodney Greenslit and Kathy Wendt (MC) Jim Gallery and Ann Ruhland John Angermeyr and Karen Serbus Scott Lothert and Judy Lussenhop 1. Following the introduction of the candidates - Laurie Caven, Lorri Daun, Linda Tisdell, Beth Frank, Amy Lussenhop, and Kim Robertson, the choir sang “You Needed Me.” Kathy Wendt then had the honors of crowning Beth Frank as our new queen. This years’ theme was Sharing the Night Together with Woodbridge providing the music at the grand march and dance. Mrs. Lorraine Simmons was the guest speaker at the banquet which was held at the Sheep Shedde of Olivia. The first play was the one act production, W. C. Fields - Foiled Again, which was used in district competition. The second play was the three act production, Bull in A China Shop. These plays were a great success in the enjoyment, togetherness, and pride it brought to our school and community. Declam Morton was represented well in Declam this year by its three members, Susan Mahlum, Julie Cornwell, and Kelly Haskell. All three competed on the sub- district level with Julie Cornwell receiving alternate and Susan Mahlum going on to the district level. At the district level Susan received first alternate for her speech. Spicing Up Our Lives A lyceum program entitled Energy Today and Tomorrow was presented to the secondary students. It was sponsored by the Agricultural Extension Service of the U. of M. Using many devices, the program demonstrated the story of the fossil fuel supply, energy conservation practices and future alternative energy sources. Following the assembly, the lecturer visited individual classrooms. The students were actively involved in the program, as you can see! 20 Tomahawk Staff FRONT ROW: Cheri Swoboda. Many an after school hour, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and vacation time are tediously spent by the editors, writers, typists, photographers, and advisor putting into print one year out of our lives. Usually the work of the annual staff goes unheralded, but when it’s all finished there comes a feeling of satisfaction and pride at having provided everyone with a book full of unforgettable memories. We hope you enjoy our annual. L to R: Linda Tisdell - Junior Editor, Dia Quintal - Assistant Editor, Mary Jean Bryan - Senior Editor, Mrs. Mary Revier - Advisor. Scott Lothert, business manager, and Mrs. Revier go over the finances for our annual. Finally, you have received your 1980 annual! We sincerely hope that you, the reader, have enjoyed our annual so far. As you turn the pages, you will notice they serve as a record of the 1979-80 school year - a lot to laugh at, to love, to look back on. As you can see, we have tried a new idea with our 1980 annual. The theme, Pouring It On” complements the fact that MHS students always give all they have - and more, not only academically, but also in areas of sports and organizations. With permission from the Morton Salt Division of Morton-Norwich, we have printed their label as our cover to coincide with the theme, “Pouring It On. At this time we would like to express our appreciation to the Morton Salt Division for their consent and their courtesy for use of their label on our annual cover. The person responsible for all the artwork, our assistant editor, Dia Quintal, certainly deserves recognition for her gifted talent. Her artistic abilities have added a great deal to our annual. Thank you Dia! To our advisor, Mrs. Mary Revier, many thanks for the long hours of hard work and effort she has given in the planning and starting of this annual until its journey to completion. A special thanks to Mrs. Bonnie Scheitel who also helped us with answers for all our questions. We also appreciate the photographic services performed for us during this school year by the people from Meyers Studio from New Ulm. And finally a thank you goes to the sponsors for their advertisements. Without their assistance, this annual would not have been possible. We offer our sincere appreciation to these people and others who have helped us. To you, the reader, sit back, relax and enjoy this pictorial review of the 1979-80 school year. We hope you enjoy this annual as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. 1980 Tomahawk Staff Mary Jean Bryan, Senior Editor Smoke Signals Staff FRONT ROW: Ellen Winges - Business Manager, Lori Larsen - Editor. The student council is traditionally the busiest and most important organization in the high school because of their responsibility toward upholding the wants and needs of the student body. This year their duties ranged from the preparation of Homecoming festivities to efforts to improve school dance policies to the approval of all school fund raisers. One of their most enjoyable jobs this year was their arrangement for a concert by Free Fare early in the spring. In May. the student council went on a well-deserved trip to the Twin Cities. Cheerleaders During the summer of '79 seven Morton cheerleaders attended the USCA camp in St. Cloud. After these girls walked away with such a large proportion of their awards it is a wonder if Morton will ever be allowed back again. As a group they took first place and received a plaque with the honor of advancing to Grand Nationals. Susan Mahlum received the first place individual award and Judy Lussenhop took second. Lois Schwab won a ribbon on talent night for a dance routine and Susan won a certificate to advance to Nationals for piano expertise. All through the season our excellent cheerleaders continued to excite the Morton fans during athletic events. FALL B-SQUAD CHEERLEADERS L to R: Mary Tisdell, Peggy Tretbar, Kelly Haskell. Morton’s music program proved to be an enthusiastic as well as busy group again this year. Along with the daily band classes and lessons the band performed at all pep tests, home athletic events, and the exciting basketball tournaments. The band also was clad stylishly in new uniforms which arrived in time for their Homecoming half time performance. During December the band together with the choir presented a Holiday Concert which was followed by a Spring Concert and the band festival later in the year. The choir also provided entertainment during the Sweetheart Coronation by singing “You Needed Me . 33 Solo-Ensemble Contest The months of April and May brought to the MHS band and choir members a chance to display a quality of SKIM as a soloist or a member of an ensemble Pictured on this page are those who participated at the district solo- ensemble contest held at the Southwest State Universi- ty campus at Marshall Those who received a star rating and the opportunity to compete and represent Morton at the region-state contest at Redwood Falls were: Flute Soloist- Jodie Kipfer. The pieces were a bunch of natural athletes, alot of hard work, plenty of previous football experience, supportive fans, confidence together with luck, and a coaching staff with the know-how to piece it all together. The final picture was the Big 7 Conference Championship and a third place finish in the state nine-man playoffs. It was a long road from summer conditioning to the fall playoffs and Morton didn't make it without alot of bruises along the way. The Indians did make it by determination and their extreme talent for making the big plays under pressure. For the year the Indians finished 9-2 with a record number of victories in a season by any Morton High School team. It was a great season made possible by the efforts of all those involved. The season was very up and down with the girls having a hard time finding their niche. Their season was halted in the second game of districts by a talented Wabasso opponent. Some seasons have been blessed with success others damned with disappointments. The last few years in Morton have been the good times - especially in boys’ basketball. In these two seasons they have compiled a 41-3 record, won two Tomahawk trophies, two District Ten tourneys, and made two trips to the Region tournament. This season, the ’79-’80. Morton also had a perfect conference record at 18- 0. the first in the history of the school. Giving leadership and stability to this team were unanimous All-Conference selections Jim Gallery. Again f A Basketball tournaments are not always won by the team with the best record, but instead by the team that peaks at the right time. Morton breezed through their regular season and were seldom challenged. The first two games of districts followed suit as Morton defeated Morgan 79-36 and then Lamberton 80-48. In the district finals Morton played a less talented but perhaps more fired Franklin team and won by their slimmest margin of the year. 58-54. As District Ten champs. Morton played a well disciplined Ruthton team in regions. Morton controlled the game most of the way. but with the end drawing near for one team Ruthton pulled off a miracle finish to win 54-52. this was the end to a simply marvelous season for the Indians with a record of 21-1. 45 Girls Basketball FRONT ROW: Kim Daun - Manager. Number one seeded Morton was one of the favorites going into the tournaments, having beaten every opponent they had faced from the district ten at least once. However. Wabasso caugh the Indians offstride in the semi-finals and beat them 42-27. The girls had a fine all-around season compiling a 14-6 record. Morton fielded a competitive baseball team again this year, a team which challenged for district and conference honors. Their ability to become a respectable team is complementary of their primarily underclassmen squad and new coach Rick Engler. Three members were chosen as members of the All-Conference team: Jim Gallery, Joe Ruhland, Dave Bidinger. L to R: Joe Dawson. Jim Gallery. The interest in boys track continues to grow in Morton and this year we were well represented. Leading the track squad was John Angermeyr who ran the 100, 200. and 400 meter dashes in the region meet. Dave Bidinger threw shot and disc in the region meet and Jim Gallery participated in the long jump. John advanced to the state meet in the 400 meter dash. I lo R: Joe Dawson. John Angermeyr, Jim Gallery. John Goes To Jim Gallery -In A Class By Himself This page is a little different than what has been done in the past. It has been set aside for a member of the Class of 1980 - Jim Gallery. Everyone knows Jim and of his many athletic accomplishments. Jim was a four sport letterwinner accumulating all-conference sta- tus five times, all-area six times, all-state twice. KNUJ Player of the Week four times. WCCO basket- ball and football prep Player of the Week four times, and placed fifth in the state as a junior in the long jump. Jim was also named Offen- sive Player of the Year for KNUJ radio this year. He kicked a 53 yard field goal against Balaton which is unofficially a state record. In addition, this year Jim set a new school record scoring the most points in a high school basketball career which makes him an official member of the 1.000 points club. These are great honors for Jim, but it must be remembered it all came by alot of hard work and the sup- port of many people, and of course his parents. The outstand- ing accomplishments Jim has earned has indeed been a reflec- tion of the many good athletes and coaches with which he has been associated. Not often does an ath- lete come along who is mentioned in the same breath as the best of the past and present. Jim Gallery is one such person who has ac- complished great individual heights while also helping his teams reach athletic goals. Jim is as fine a high school athlete as you are going to see. But as the saying goes, ‘‘to err is human to forgive is divine” or better yet “nobody's perfect.” Well we have caught a few mistakes and we would like to take this opportunity that this extra page (known as the oops page) offers for us to correct those mistakes. First of all. when we sent into Jostens the faculty and staff section. Gwen Kodet was not a part of the MHS family yet. But she is pictured on page 55 in the salt can for the faculty division page which was sent in at a later date. Our apologies to Gwen as she is pictured but not recognized. Second, it seems we forgot to give recognition to three faculty and staff members who have also driven a District 652 school bus many a time throughout this school year. Our apologies to Jerry Borman. Don Robertson, and Gene Bryan and our thanks for getting us to all those places - safely. Our third mistake was not thanking two very importaht underclassmen who helped to make this annual possible. They nave spent many long hours working on this annual and yet we failed to recognize them on page 23. A big thanks to the junior editor Linda Tisdell and to the copy editor Charlotte Bethke for all their work. Your help was deeply appreciated. Good luck on the 1981 annual! Another mistake it seems we made is that we forgot about the junior high girls basketball team. Sorry girls! FRONT ROW: Karyl Haskell. Donna Borman. Julie Dehnke. Gloria Forcier. ROW TWO: Melissa Columbus. Jean Reitter. Dawn Balsley. Lisa Cornwell. Mrs. Patsy Steffen - Coach. In a year that sometimes seemed too serious, you had to remember not to take yourself too seriously. After all. as Mrs. Revier and Mr. Tate seem to be telling us. the year had a lot Autographs Autographs f V MftfOX fill Hfm ■ Avk l M mi U MfiOWlA V
