High expectations soon became joyous reality when this team put together a thirteen game winning streak and then after a rare loss extended it through to Region III play. They became the District 10 Champs, which had eluded Morton's grasp for 35 years, and played their game in Regions to the final seconds before falling short by but one point. Our team represented our town and our school well, both in competition and in char- acter, and for this we'd like to commend you and dedicate this annual to you. Sunshine Staff 1. For the first five games Morton looked like the state playoff team of a year ago, but the sixth game turned out to be an unfortunate turning point. A letdown led to three disappointing losses. They overcame their mid-season slump in time for a season ending romp over Cottonwood giving Morton its second winning season of nine- man football. Special recognition must be given to junior Jim Gallery who was named to the All-State team as kicker and senior Brian Daun who was an All-State honorable men- tion linebacker. The season began and ended with a loss with many dazzling and struggling games in between. Many opportu- nities arose during the season which were caught and kept by the team while other opportunities were lost along the way. Although there were disappointments over the course of the season, all was not lost as valuable lessons were learned and important experience gained. Having only one senior player caused a few problems, although this may turn out to be a blessing for the under- classmen. The talent is there and with several key players returning and a good season of learning be- low their belts, there is good rea- son to look toward the future and smile. A lot of time was spent experimenting, finding who will play where, but after this was accomplished, they got down to some serious and well perfected ball. Many underclassmen earned valuable ex- perience which will prove vital for the success of their team. 33 Boys Track BOYS TRACK FRONT ROW: Brad Kodet, John Tate, Jim Hennen, Robin Schwalbe ROW 2: Mr. Steve Smalley - Coach, Mark Daun, Rick Lothert, Bob Haas, Mr. Kevin Passe - Coach ROW 3: Brian Daun, David Bidinger, Jim Gallery, John Angermeyr, Scott Hennen. BOYS TRACK Boys track was a refound sport this year, easily surpassing the number of participants of the last few years. It was still a small team, but they made up for their lack in quantity with their high quality and excellent individual perfor- mances. Jim Gallery was one of these Individuals. He performed well all season in several events with his leaping ability in the long jump, carrying him to a fifth place finish in the State meet. GIRLS TRACK Improved performances by the tal- ented underclassmen helped counter the fact that there was only one returning senior this year. This development of the younger tracksters will make up the heart for the future team, which makes both the athletes and coaches op- timistic about their future suc- cesses based upon this year's fine performances. Patty Angermeyr again dominated the 220 yard dash In the area and competed in the State meet for her second year. 35 M Club And Pep Club M CLUB ROW 1: M. Wahldick, C. Lussenhop, M. Brazil, L.
