Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1974 volume:

Dedication We, the Morton High School Senior Class of 1974, dedicate the 1974 Tomahawk to Maybelle Kline, who has served as bus driver for the stu- dents of M.H. S. for many years. We would like to thank Mrs. Kline not only for her years of driving us to and from school, but also for the many times she has performed other tasks and services for us. Thank you, Maybelle. 18 Years of Service Evelyn Curtis, an elementary teacher at Morton for 18 years, started her schooling at Worthing- ton. After finishing grade school there in 1927, she went to Kirksville Missouri Teachers' College for a year. Following this she attended Mankato Teachers' College, and after a year got her teaching degree in Elementary Education. From 1928-35 Mrs. Curtis taught at Ivanhoe, Minnesota. During the years from 1940-51 she taught at various rural schools. In 1953 she taught in North Redwood. Finally after this job she came to Morton in 1956 and has taught here until this year. The people of Morton and all her past students would like to express their grat- itude for her years of dedicated service. 2 Homecoming Homecoming 1973 began Thursday Sept. 13 at the coronation ceremon- ies held in the High School Audit- orium. The 1973 Queen was pre- sented her crown after the Pep Band and a few skits set the mood. The queen candidates were Mary Anderson, Vicki Ruhland, and Peggy Tate escorted by Greg Pres- cott, Gordon Senkyr, and Russ Pendleton, respectively. Patty Gallery, the mistress of ceremony, introduced the girls and welcomed back Bobbi Tretbar, 1972's Queen, escorted by the Captain of the Football Team, Mike Winges. Bobbi crowned Vicki Ruhland as our Queen. LEFT TO RIGHT: Peggy Tate, Queen Vicki Ruhland, and Mary Anderson. Homecoming skit by the Cheerleaders Club. Patty Gallery, Mistress of ceremonies, announced the candidates. 5 The Morton High School Marching Band. Homecoming day festivities began with a pep fest in front of the school before the parade be- gan. The parade consisted of class floats and the grade school marchers, Legion members, Queen Vicki and her Princesses and the High School Band. Disappointing the team and many home- comers the Indians lost their game 14-6 against Sleepy Eye. The only touchdown the team scored was a 60 yard punt return by Tom Borman. That night the Los Vaqueros provided music for the dance, which was held in the gym instead of the town hall as it had previously been done. 6 Tom Borman goes all the way for the score! 7 Joe picks out another one! Natural High First Musical On April 26, 1974 the 36-member Morton chorus present- ed the folk-rock musical NATURAL HIGH. This was the first time a musical had been put on in Morton. The chorus was directed by Mikel Paulson, and assisting with choreography was Phyllis Schaefer. There were 22 individual songs and many solos. Also a quartet was sung. A Franklin High Junior, Todd Sherman, played the drums. NATURAL HIGH was so well received that the cast trav- eled to Sanborn May 2 to give another performance, and on May 6 a second performance was presented by request to a Morton audience. Gloria Gaasch Crowned The Annual FHA Sweetheart Dance was held on Febru- ary 8, 1974 in the high school auditorium. The doors opened to a swarm of finely groomed students at 7:30 p. m. The girls who were nominated as queen candidates were: Mary Ann Mahoney, Debbie Serbus, Jill Robin- son, Nancy Menz, Gloria Gaasch, Mary Halliday, Deb Wolter, and Betty Sullivan. Of these eight all Morton students who attended the dance voted for three. At 8:30 coronation began as Mary Anderson announced the 1973 queen, Janice Goblirsch and her escort, George Paul. Following them were the candidates and their escorts. Finally the big moment arrived! Janice walked over to get the envelope and the crown. After a couple twirls around the candidates she placed the crown on Gloria Gaasch s head. Following the coronation was the dance with music provided by the record player. Many kids attended and the floor was packed. A lunch of punch and cake came at 9:30. The dance concluded around 11:00. 10 Our Honored Gals FHA: Gloria Gaasch Escorted by Ed Colwell Band: Mary Ann Mahoney Escorted by Rocky Crooks Science Club: Betty Sullivan Escorted by Steve McCorquodale St. Council: Mary Halliday Escorted by Ted Frank M Club: Debbie Wolter Escorted by Dave Menz Cheerleading Club: Nancy Menz Escorted by Tim Kodet One Act Plays Three one act plays presented by Morton High School students were given on November 19, 1973. The cast, composed of students from grades 7-12, was evidence indeed that the entire high school had been represent- ed. Under the direction of Miss Seng, these students practiced for many weeks. Performances were given to the grade school during the day and to the village that night. LOVE HITS WILBER, ABOVE: FIRST ROW: Terry Tate, Jay Brown, Nancy Lussenhop. It be- gan with a banquet at St. John's Catholic church in Mor- ton, which included a meal and a program put on by the Juniors. Mr. Tate and former Science teacher, Mr. Al- ladin, both spoke. At 9 o'clock the Grand March began through a lovely, spring-time setting done to fit the prom theme, Pieces of April. The dance continued till twelve with music supplied by Apperson. Following the dance the couples were invited to the Falls Theater to watch Psycho. From 2 o'clock on a break- fast was served by Junior parents at the Legion Hall. This breakfast was intended to be the end of a long night, but many couples kept going, arriving home any time be- tween 3 and 8 o'clock. Awards Day Presentation of hard earned awards to many high school and secondary school students took place on May 23, 1974 in the high school auditorium. The award categories ranged from both girls' and boys' athletics to the coveted senior awards. This was the day that the stu- dents of M.H.S. had worked all year for; when they could see proof of the hours they had put into the many activities and classes they had undertaken. The fans must remember that only two seniors started consistently. Schaefer was also optimistic about '74, the underclass- men made great progress this year, and should be ready for a hot season next year. Tom Borman, who will be a senior next year, received honorary mention on the all conference team. This supports the Coaches' optimism for a good season next year. Foot- ball spirit started out average, but after a few games the enthusiasm declined and was still on its way down when Basketball season began. But following Spirit Week (Jan. 21-25) and a couple Indian victories, the pep took a noticeable climb and continued throughout the season. 25 Baseball FRONT ROW: Tom Borman, Joe Hennen, Randy Olson, Tim Hennen, Jim Shaw. Track The Morton High School track team came up against many problems in the 1974 season. The 9 member team was composed of mostly younger boys, with only 1 Junior, Tom Borman, and 1 Sen- ior, Randy Mages. Despite these disadvantages the team placed in both the Conference and District track meets. Leading point earner during the season was Scott Tretbar. Scott placed 2nd in the 100 yard dash and 5th in the 220 at the District. Tom Borman also placed 5th in the 100 and the 880 relay team placed 5th. Scott traveled to the Regional track meet where he again came in 2nd in the 100. He went to the State track meet but unfortunately failed to place. 27 The Enthusiasts JUNIOR HIGH: Terry Tate, Donna AngermeyT, Betty Kodet, Teresa Sullivan, Debbie Lothert, Mary Beth Bidinger. The girls were taught many cheers, jumps, partner stunts, and two pompon routines. Lectures were held in the afternoon. At Talent Night they got some ideas for skits and spirit boosters. In the evenings there was evaluation. Morton received five superiors and one outstanding ribbon. They also won a spirit stick one night of their stay. 28 A-Squad Cheerleaders Capt. The practice of giving out a certain rating for each song was dropped this year. The judges only gave their criticisms. The Chorus re- cevied many excellent comments from every- body from judges to the listening audience. The Band also received fine comments and these were especially well received as the mu- sic they performed was quite difficult. One can tell the success of a festival when all the members of the Chorus, for example, came home on the bus singing all their music instead of cheers.
