The Senior Class of Morton High School Presents The 1967 TOMAHAWK Morton Minnesota 56 2 70 2 IN MEMORIAM We Seniors of 1967 take pride in dedicating this, our book of mem- ories, to John Brown, Morton High School custodian, 1959-1966 who passed away on January 3, 1967. We honor John Brown on behalf of the many services he has performed and the deep interest he has shown not only in our school, but in our community. Because of his previous work at the local post office and his dedicated work with the volun- teer fire department and the American Legion, John Brown will not be forgotten 4 NOiivaisiNiwav Mr. Cecil Halliday South Dakota State University B.S. As in previous years, the Thursday evening coronation was prefaced with an array of illus- trious skits introduced by Barb Caven, mistress of ceremonies for the evening. Following the crowning of Queen Linda, the spirited Specta- tors gathered in the school yard to participate in the bigger- than-ever bonfire. Friday morning found students being excused from classes to put finishing touches on the floats for 1966. Heading the afternoon parade, which followed, was the color guard composed of American Legionnaires. It's S.O.S. for O.H.S. was a fitting theme for the rally between the Morton Indians and the Olivia Wildcats. Although the hometown was defeated, the game was an actual victory be- cause of the participation by both fans ana players. The Ambassadors, hailing from Marshall, led the afternoon into evening with their soft music drifting through pink strips of crepe paper. The Homecoming 1966 had come to a close, and once again this Homecoming was even more resplendent and enjoyed by more than was last years. A difficult week of practice for the squad and the coaches preceded the 1966 Homecoming game with the Olivia Wild- cats. As the team retired after the first half, signs of a victory were in sight as the opponets led by a mere 7-6. Third quarter action began with the In- dians making slight mistakes—errors which set the favored Wildcats ahead by a second touchdown. The final tally of 25-6, with Olivia on top, proved to be a combination of plays minus scoring and unsuccessful attempts to recover the ball. The eloquent occasion was the annual Prom presented to the Seniors by the Junior Class. Soft lights and music set the mood for the theme, Moonlight and Roses. Following the delectable meal of swiss steak, potatoes, carrots, and ice cream. Bob Mahoney, Jr. Class President welcomed the students, the faculty, and the school board and their wives to the Minnesota Room. Tonight and Moon River vocal selections sung by a choral group, preceded a speech on Friendship presented by Mr. Zetah, history teacher at Morton. Lee Mammen then read the class prophecy and Linda Kodet, Sr. Class President presented the Juniors with the Senior Class Will. The Grand March began at 9:30 with the Marshall Dance Band playing. The entire group enjoyed themselves tremendously and hope the Juniors of following years will continue to present such fine proms. Future Homemakers of America The Morton Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America Prospered in its fourth successful year. The 25 girls and their activities were guided by Mrs. Carol Ludtke. This year the Chapter carried out severa] special projects such as the distribution of cookies at Christmas, the selling of notebooks, the Sweetheart Ball, and the sponsoring of a Parents' Night. Several girls also attended the District Convention in October and the State Convention in March. This year Patty Wolter was a member of the State Camp Committee. As a special project for both Patty and the Chapter, they organized a trip to FFA-FHA camp for about 30 girls from our district. The girls attended the week-long session at their campsite on Lake Arrowhead near Virginia, Minnesota. i u r.'itnn t [uni Mm: i i im. : r« '««mi AM. The small number of injuries in- dicates that the team was in excellent physi- cal condition and that our equipment was su- perb. The industrious fifty-five who partic- ipated so wholly closed the season with five wins, two losses and one match. Proof of our team's ability to work together for success was shown in the selection of the Dallenbach brothers and the Benson brothers for the All- Conference team. Eight senior lettermen will relinquish their uniforms to the forty-seven experienced underclassmen; making for a suc- cessful 1967 season. This was the combined result of a desire to win and the ability of each player. The team responsible for this fine record was composed of two seniors, five Juniors, five sophomores, and two freshmen. Seniors, Terry Baardsgaard and Dick Roper contributed much to the success that the Indians had. Although their efforts will be missed, the valuable resources of the under- classmen promise a successful season next year. 39 Coach Tate FRONT ROW: Terry Lothert, Terrin Kohout, Bob Kuglin, Rocky Sallee, Mike Simmons, Bob Larsen, BACK ROW: Tom Serbus, Steve Winces, Dan Bucholz, Dan Zobeok, Bill Shaw, Allan Lothert, Tom Menz B Team and Junior High The B team finished the season with a very creditable 6-12 win-loss record. Next year’s A squad will be strengthened by this year’s B veterans, so we are looking for a successful season. The B team is also optimistic as the boys from the championship- junior high team are also coming up. All in all it looks rosy for our basketball future. Basketball This was a year of triumph for our Junior High Team. The boys overpowered all comers to finish the season with a 12-1 record. This great season paved the way to the Junior High Tournaments and three rousing victories over Winthrop, Gaylord, and our arch-rival, Morgan to capture the trophy. This is the first championship for many years for Morton. And it can never be retained... without a constant fight.. .Success is 8lowly harvested.. .By energy and toil.. .And it can only come to life ...If there is fertile soil...It is the house where glory lives.. .And perseverance knocks.. .And faith and courage are the keys... That turn the master locks.. .It is the real and rich reward.. .That waits from year to year.. .For those whose hearts are honest.. .And whose efforts are sincere. Valedictorian and Salutatorian Honor Students Commencement speaker, Mr. Clayton LeFevere May 25, 1967 at eight o’clock p. m. was the date and time for the graduation for the class of 1967 at Morton High School. The high school band played the processional march as Valedictorian Linda Kodet, Salutatorian Clifton Simon, and the Honor students led the graduates to the stage. Reverend Kenneth Willard delivered the Invocation and Benediction; the high school band and chorus performed; and Superintendent Anderson introduced the Commencement speaker, Mr. Clayton LeFevere who delivered an excellent address on the meaning of success. Of course, the big moment of the evening arrived when Mr. Halliday, Principal, presented the Class of 67 to Mr. J. R. Simmons who presented the long-awaited diplomas to the Seniors. It was a perfect night which will always remain in the memories of the departing Seniors. 64 Here, we the co-editors, Linda Kodet and Clifton Simon take the opportunity to give a special mention of thanks to our advisor. Miss Anderson and to all who helped us produce the 1966- 7 Tomahawk. We are leaving Morton High School with reluctance, as it has played the leading role in our lives for twelve years. We hope we are able to set a good example to reflect all the effort and special attention our teachers have lavished on us. We wuuld like also to say something to the underclassmen. Always have the courage to do what is right and find a worthy goal in life. Apply yourselves to your studies as they will have an important effect on your future. Remember, it always takes more courage to do what you know is right.
