The Morton Public School Board of 1966 received the original Morton school bell from Henry FlinX who has had it at his home since the old school was tom down. This bell was first mounted in the old two-room house located then in the north- west part of town. Approximately one hundred years old, the bell has announced school days for many of our grandparents. The Student Council sponsored a contest for the best suggestion of displaying this bell. Senior Larry Blue, received first prize for his plan, which, will be used 4 as they mount the bell this summer. QUEEN SANDI Coronation The evening of our homecoming coronation, Thurs- day, October lU, began with music by the pep band. A talent show, sponsored by the senior class, featured skits by the various organizations of the school. Frank Goelz, master of ceremonies, introduced each skit and then introduced Joann Kodet, our third run- ner-up to the queen, who commented on the royalty. To the theme of All American Girl, our candi- dates marched in with their escorts. Last year’s queen, Sandi Marguth, was escorted by Mike Tate. At the climactic moment of the evening, Sandi Wolter was crowned 1966 homecoming queen. The guests followed the royalty outside to the bonfire and peD fest which was led by the cheerlead- ers. After the queen lighted the symbolic fire the fans cheered and the coach gave his encouraging speech. The guests left with high hopes for the next day's activities. r- OUEEN SRHDl HOMECOMING PARADE In the early afternoon of a windy Friday, October 15 excited families and friends could be seen gathering along the parade route• As the whistle sounded and the drums rolled out the opening cadence, the Homecoming parade began as the honor guard led the parade through the center of town The school band in uniform followed in step. Our three candidates and their parents waved from convertibles. The high school students proudly displayed floats they had constructed in the busy days of preparation. Showing their pep, elementary children wore colorfully de- corated boxes which added a spirited ending to the pre-game fest- ivities. With good coaching and team effort, the Indians proudly claim a 5-3 record. All district player, co-captain Mike Tate, was the field general responsible for many touchdowns with his terrific speed, fine running ability, and an excel- lent throwing arm. Co-captain Robinson, making the all district team 2 years, led the Indians defense with his commanding spot in the center line. Hailed as the best placement kicker in the area. Bob Menz also helped hold down the strong de- fensive line. Dean Ruhland, the fine of- fensive end, enabled the Indians to come out with a winning season by grabbing many passes for gains of 20-30 yards. Playing both offense and defense, our right half- back, Dan Hennen, often broke up big plays with key tackles, Hennen was also praised for his accurate arm. Leading the center of the offensive line was right guard, Dan Mages. With fine strength, he often open- ed up the hole for the running backs. Do- ing the squad s dirty work, Frank Goelz ran back the kick-offs as well as gaining many yards on the returns. The Indians were second place contenders in the Tomahawk conference. At the festival, the chorus performed two numbers for the Judge, Professor Gerherd Track who is the choral director at St. John's University. In the even- ing, before the mass chorus numbers were sung, our choir sang before an audience of parents and music lovers. After all par- ticipating schools had sung their selections, the mass chorus, di- rected by Mr. Track, performed four choral selections to bring to an end the 1966 choral festi- val. Tate The 1965-66 basketball team did not have an entirely suc- cessful season, but the 6 sen- iors, 2 Juniors and 5 sopho- mores, were in the game fight- ing to the finish. The team members elected Mike Tate and Denny Robinson as their co- captains. The Indians totaled a record of 8 wins and 11 loses. They used a policy of hustle and teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Even though six senior net- •cers are not returning for the 66-67 season, the prospects look good for next year. Jr. High Coach: Mr. H. Larsen Senior High Basketball Asst. Coach: Mr. L. Schaffer Denny Robinson Mike Tate Dean Ruhland Senior VIP’S Fourteen boys contributed to the success of our 1965 bas- ketball team. The team was composed of six seniors, and eight underclassmen. Mr. Dean Tate coached the Indians to an overall win-loss record of 10-11. The season was filled with many thrilling moments. Joyful victories, and some heartbreaking losses. Next year's team will miss six senior lettermen. Heading that list is co-captain, Mike Tate, our team's leading scor- er. Mike scored a total of 1,072 points in his high school career. Co-captain Denny Robinson cleared the boards at his com- manding spot under the basket and shot consistently from the corners. Bob Menz handled the team's other big man position that will leave a big spot for somebody to fill next year. Our defensive ace, Dan Hennen, who was after all the ball con- stantly, was a very good defense man displaying coxmnendable ballhandling. Two of our smallest guards, Joe Colwell and Dean Ruhland, made it possible for our team to accumulate large scores by their accurate ball handling and well-played defensive man- euvers . We bid farewell to these athletes who have devoted their time and cooperation to make our basketball team a winning one. Cheerleaders Junior High Basketball Our Junior High Basketball team finished the 1965-66 sea- son by placing third out of a field of eight, at the Tomahawk Conference Basketball Tourna- ment. Our seventh and eighth grade teams also had a very success- ful season, with a combined re- cord of eighteen wins and only one loss. With such a fine re- cord, our prospects for next year look excellent. The squad will be blessed with an abund- ance of height and speed along with some fine shooting and ballhandling. Another aspect of this team will be its depth which should produce a corapet- ative spirit and make these ballplayers fight for a posi- tion on next year’s tournament squad. Declamation The climb to the state level competition in a declamation contest is truly an experience to re- member for a high school student. The series of contests lasted from mid March to late April and all schools could particiapate. The first contest is, of course, the local, with every bit of the excitement of a state con- test. The first selection given by Mary Ahrens was a grouping of three short poems of Stephen Crane. Each contestant must preface his reading with a spoken introduction and the entire presentation is not longer than five minutes. At the sub-dis- trict Mary read a selection from Edwin A. Robinson. At the district speech meet,Mary chose two poems by a favorite Anerican , William W. Longfellow, includ- ing the well-known An Arrow and a Song. Receiv- ing an A rating, Mary next Journeyed to Tracy High School for the next big regional gathering. Here, she drew a different selection by Edwin A. Robinson again, and this rendition brought particular praise from the adjudicator for Mary and her coach, Mrs. Larsen. Mary received her last superior rating with a difficult work of the contemporary poet, Wallace Stevens, at the state contest in Hamline University in St. Paul. Out of the eight different categories in Declam work, students from Morton partic- ipate in five of them, which are storytelling, extemporaneous reading, non-original oratory, serious interpretation and humorous interpretation. After the local contest, which was the latter part of February or the first part of March, we went to the sub-district contest. Only four divisions are entered in the sub-district so the remaining four local winners go directly to the district con- test. We have had an exceptionally fine year. From our fourteen local winners, twelve went to the sub-district at Morgan and from there we had five who entered the District 10 competition at New Ulm. Our two district winners, Mary Kay Ahrens and Barb Petsinger, competed in the Reg- ion 3 festival at Tracy. Maiy Kay,a regional winner, competed in the state festi- val at Hamline University at St. Paul, where she received an A rating. Betty Crocker Award Marv Sullivan is the 1966 Homemaker of To- morrow from Morton High School. Mary was the top scorer from the fourteen senior girls who participated in the contest. Mary was awarded a bronze pin for this honor. Mary's paper next entered the state contest. The winner of the state contest received an ex- pense paid trip to Williamsburg, Virginia, and Washington D.C. along with a $1500 scholarship; second place winner received a $500 scholarship and a set of the Encyclopedia Britannica. The winning papers from the state contest entered the national contest. The first winner received a $5000 scholarship, second winner a $U000 scholarship, third place winner a $3000 scholarship, and fourth winner a $2000 scholar- ship. Congratulations, Mary. 43 A third place finish in the Tomahawk conference, a seventh place finish in the district, a third straight Jr. High champ- ionship in the Springfield Invitational, and four winning track meets at home; these are some of the highlights of the 1966 Mor- ton High School track season. In the conference track meet, we had one champion. Steve Goelz won the pole vault. Other scorers were Frank Goelz-2nd in the mile, Terry Dallenbach-2nd in the 220 and high Jump, Mike Dallenbach-Uth in the 100 yard dash, Paul Harrison-3rd in the shot put, Lee Mammem-Uth in the high hurdles. Bill Shaw-3ra in the pole vault. Our 880 relay team of Terry Dallenbach, Mike Tate, Bill Shaw and Mike Dallenbach was a close 2nd, and our mile relay of Steve Goelz, Tom Gallery, Mike Tate and Frank Goelz finished 3rd. With 10 of Morton's 13 lettermen returning next year, Mor- SENIORS Mike Tate was the miler of the team and was on the 880 relay. He was a mem- ber of the mile relay which set the school rec- ord; and second place fin- isher in the mile at the conference. Frank Goelz ran the UUO and the 880, mile relay and was a Doint winner at the high Jump. Dean Ruhland provided keen competition as he ran the UUO, 880, mile relay and was a point winner at the high Jump. ton has promise of a good season. 1 Row 1: Tom Gallery, Steve Goelz, Bill Wilson, Frank Goelz, Dean Ruhland, Mike Tate, Mike Dal- lenbach, Lee Mammen. SENIOR CLASS TRIP On Monday, April U, the Seniors and chaperons, Mr. and Mrs. H lli- day and Mr. and Mrs. Bryan, set out for the Twin Cities. After an hour of free time the Seniors met in Dayton's Skyroom for supper and later attended The Sound of Music. Monica Kodet, Diane Bucholz, Mary Gallery, Beryl Paul, Arlene Mude, Bob Mahoney, Tom Gallery, Greg Kuglin, Dick Rebstock and Jim Ahrens did an excellent Job serving the buffet dinner. Junior-Senior Prom Prom accessories We could have danced all nite! Joann and Barb leading the Grand March 48 ■ Blushing faces with slightly windblown hair, brightly colored skirts mov- ing gracefully over the dance floor, young fingers fumbling with corsage pins , signified that our 1966 Prom had begun. All the hard work of the Junior Class was beautifully displayed in delicate shades of pink crepe paper with assorted candy designs. At one end of the gym was an adorable candy house complete with red tulips in a window box. Punch was served from a rus- tic little well. Excited Juniors and Seniors passed through a candy cane arch as the Mar- shall High School Dance band began the evening of music. The Grand March at 8:00 was Candyland led by the Senior Class President, Jo Ann Sindelir, and her escort. A delight- ful buffet luncheon was served throughout the eve- ning with the Junior mothers assisting. The grade school hallway was gaily decorated and Sophomore servers led the couples to their tables. Later in the evening. Cliff Simon welcomed everyone and acted as the program's emcee. The class will and prophecy were read by Barb Caven and Jo Ann Sindelir, Jr. and Sr. Class Presidents. A girls sextet, Sandi Wolter, Ruth Mages, Arleen Kohout, Sue Ahrens, Barb Caven, and Cathy Sindelir sang select- ions from The Sound of Music and West Side Story. Every- one agreed that the evening was much too short. 49 MARY K.
