?5 THE PIERIAN Foreword THE Pierian Stafi ' tliis year has tried to publisli, on the same old limited budget, a book that is some- what new and different. Of course, in doing this, we have encountered new difficulties and new problems. Through all these troubles, our fac- ulty advisers, Miss Finfrock and Mr. McNaughton, have helped us to find our way, and we sincerelj hope that our labors have not been wasted. In other words, we, the staff of the 1937 Pierian, hope that this book will be one which you will be proud to keep as a reminder of your high school days.

-C Hn emodam rtl6982 • iTi MISS MARTHA WHITACRE, after over fifty years of service as teacher, principal, and department tiead, retired during ttie summer of 193(). Only a few days later, Morton pupils and alumni were shocked to learn of her death. A native ofWayneC.ounty, Miss Whitacre was S ' ' ' ' f ' uated from the Richmond High School and received her B.A. and M.A. de- grees from Earlham College. She began her teaching career in 1884 in the old Whitewater building, and since then taught in Starr, Garfield, Baxter, and Morton. As a result of her wide inter- est in professional problems, she was at one time elected president of the Indiana State Teachers ' Association. ]Miss Whitacre, a brilliant woman and a most thorough and capable teacher of mathe- matics, will long remain in the memory of those Morton pupils who were fortunate enough to study under her direction. pHARLES B. BECK, treasurer of the Richmond School Board since 1927, died on January 27, 1937 as a result of an automobile accident. Mr. Beck was a graduate of Indiana State Nor- mal School, a former Richmond Post- master, and served on the city ' s first Planning Board. Mr. Beck ' s wise and broad-minded advice was of great service to the School City of Richmond. His absence will be felt keenly in the school organ- ization. A riSS HARRIETT THOMPSON, • ' ■ • ' • teacher and principal in the Rich- mond schools for fifty years, died on January 10, 1937. She was a graduate of the local high school and of Earl- ham College. At the time of her withdrawal from the school system in 1933, a resolution was made public by the Board of School Trustees commending her ex- ceptional record of service, her efll- cicncy in teaching, her personal serv- ice, and her influence.
